  • Ukraine continues to be on a military roll. Its army has made its biggest breakthrough against Russian forces in the south of the country since the war there began.

Ukrainian troops are advancing near the southern city of Kherson after recapturing several villages in the region. They've also consolidated gains in the east.
Our International Editor Lindsey Hilsum has tracked the route of the Ukrainian counter-offensive from Izium toward Lyman - stopping in the villages of Yatskivka and Sviatogirsk along the way.
Filmed and edited by Soren Munk and produced by Rob Hodge.

I, as a Ukrainian, want to thank everyone who helps my country not only with their money, but also just morally, I want people to understand how much we love freedom; I will quote the words from our anthem .... We will lay down our soul and body for our freedom ..

I am an American in the USA 🇺🇸 and everyday since the first day of Russian attack in February, I watch the news and follow this horrible and tragic event. I have cried tears of worries, sadness and joy for the Ukrainians. I am so proud, moved, motivated and inspired by these brave people determined to fight for the price of FREEDOM. May the lord be by their side and may victory come soon for the Ukrainians.

That wonderful teenage girl with her beauty regime made me cry and feel so proud of her. The metaphorical message here is just extraordinary.

Thank you Lindsey. It must be so difficult to be there for such a long time and see so much horror and sadness. These stories are so important. You are appreciated and admired.

Thank you for focusing of the suffering of civilians. I'm haunted by a report I saw a few months ago when the Russians were just about to take Izium. The residents were told to evacuate but there are always those who dig in. A British reporter talked to a family of four as they were returning from a forage for as much food as the could find before hiding in a basement with neighbours. There was a cute 5 or 6 year old boy and the most adorable little girl, with glasses and long honey blond hair, about 8 or 9. She told the reporter: "I'm not scared, I'm the big sister, that's why I'm not scared." As she spoke she kept flinching and startling every time bombs exploded nearby.

The Ukrainians are showing the world what real bravery is. Their country, and their leader Zelensky, is gonna go down in the history books, as a prime example of courage, and fearlessness. After this, the Ukrainians will forever be a friend to the west. And us to them.

I grew up as a Polish Ukrainian American (3rd generation) in Michigan with a street full of Ukrainian and Polish families. My peoples are badasses and wickedly smart. When the invasion started I told my husband "...wait for it..." None of this surprises me. All my love to Ukraine.

That Ukrainian soldier brings to mind a wonderful line from "A bridge too far": "Haven't you wondered why the Allies haven't pressed their advantage more? I think it's because we've been retreating faster than they can advance."
