This is a criminally underrated film. I was there when it was first released and I just couldn't understand why people were so turned off by the daring lighting effects. As if other movies were "realist." No Hollywood film (well, nearly none) are realistic. They are all stylized. Coppola went the extra mile and had real fun with the look of this film. And I had fun watching it. And I was moved by the story. So what's so wrong about that? This film is reminiscent of, but pre-dated, Baz Lurhrmann 's "Strictly Ballroom" by a decade.

Agreed. And it got a peculiar unwarranted scathing bad review from the NY Times. The public didn't care. I worked at the Loews Paramount theater in New York at the time, and we packed them in every weekend for about 3 weeks, and near full houses during the week, but sadly, business then lagged . But regardless... It's visually one of the most striking movies I've ever seen, incredible sound and film editing, the lighting, graceful camera angles, and plays out almost like a pleasant surreal dream. Not to mention, beautiful soundtrack.. The two voices really compliment each other.

The effects and set design are better than the plot.

@@Clay3613 Hey, I'd agree. But damn, for the time, this was an rather visually daring film that was not a science fiction epic. It was one of the most "theatrical" films of its time.

Watched the Reprise version at IFC in New York last month. This opening sequence really really blew me away. The restored version stabilizes the camera, making the movements feel entirely frictionless. It was super trippy. Still not sure what are my thoughts about this film are overall...

Sorry I missed it. I worked at the Loews Paramount in the early 80s and we showed this movie. I never got tired of it, especially these great opening credits . Visually, it's one of the most striking and beautiful movies I've seen

I can imagine seeing credits like this in the mid-2000s with CGI and being wowed by the presentation style already, but old-school craft-from-scratch on pure film from 1981? HOLY. COW. It's DANG epic.
