Kudos to your grandfather and father for passing on great values. It happens so little in this day and age.👍
Once again Happy Holidays to all!

For all the guys saying “get a planar or ebaspacher heater” those soot up too, (former long haul truck driver who’s dealt with many of them) and when they do they’re a hell of a lot more complicated to take apart and clean. They also require plugging in with a laptop and proprietary software and cords to get codes or “reset” them after they lock out after several attempted start failures. I’ve been using these Chinese diesel heaters for about 7 years in my 5th wheel (travel for work) and they are finicky sometimes but for the most part reliable. Currently sitting here in windy assed North Dakota enjoying 4 of them running heating various things.

Good work on the heater. White smoke = too much fuel / not enough air. Check controller settings for fan / pump speeds.
The exhaust leak at the stub can be cured.
1 cut 3 or 4 small slits about 3/4 the length of the stub.
2 use a smear of exhaust paste.
3 use a wire clamp of the type shown on page 19 of my book.

The floor has corrugations , but
the plate does not. Someone sells
      a ( silicone ?) gasket for that.
I'm guessing that the muffler is
still clogged a bit. That's why it
was jetting out of the weep hole
'til enough of the clog burned-off , and the path of least
      resistance returned to normal
      ( no more back-pressure ) .

    • @thehappymailman

Seal that flange to the floor! Get a more substantial clamp for the exhaust, get a more radiused elbow so it’s more of a sweep rather than a quick 90 degree turn, and ditch the intake “filter” if it has any foam type stuff in it. It restricts the air intake causing an extremely rich fuel mixture and can ice up in blizzard like conditions

Their is a spring in the centre of the muffler that keeps the insulation clear of the centre tube that flows exhaust.
My spring rusted and broke into pieces inside of muffler so it let the insulation stop the flow from coming out the end.
I pulled spring pieces and all the insulation out and it works great again but louder.
Also seal between the plate and ribs in the floor so there is no chance of exhaust entering inside….Im more worried about penny than you because you will smell it and she is home alone quite a bit.

This is now my 2nd winter in my FT solo vanlife. I don't have a heater or an A/C for those extreme seasons. Yes, it can be very miserable at times, as the coldest I've slept with no heater is 10F, the hottest with no A/C 110F. I've always been mentally tough and as long as you take measures to keep yourself bundled up in winter (yes, your fingers, feet and face will get numb), you won't die. It builds character and slowly you adapt. It's def not for the faint of heart or weak-minded people. I guess I've always been a glutton for punishment and like to push myself to the brink of madness lol..P.S. I don't know how I'd fare in Canada, though! Hats off to my fellow vanlifers to the north! Hi Matt, one of the problems with running the Chinese diesel heater is. If you run them at low tick over for long periods they can/do soot up. I've been running one in my van for four years, what I do is 1. Put a diesel cleaner in the fuel tan ( not Seafoam) 2. Run the heater at max for a short period before powering down (off).
Seafoam I believe is really for piston combustion engines that tend to run at high revs. It wouldn't suprise me if the crap you dug out on the last video was burnt Seafoam as the diesel heater does not run the same as a piston combustion engine.
At this point in your diesel heater problem I would just swap it out for the new one you have, take no chances. Happy festivities, You, Brooklyn and Penny keep safe and producing your great videos.

Thank you for these diesel heater videos! I knew mine was getting close to crapping out weeks ago due to the weird flame ignition noise it started making and the black spot the exhaust was leaving on the ground…it finally crapped out with a flameout error this morning after nearly 2 years of perfect operation. These videos will help greatly in my maintenance of the heater. Glad I ordered all the rebuild stuff a few weeks ago. Thanks again Matthew!

Penny likes those treats. Mowwww. You did good fixing that heater. Check the exhaust where it was leaking inside once in a while. IF it was leaking, then that means it could again since you didn't change anything after it leaked. I know, I am being a worry wart. Merry Christmas. Hugs from an ole granny. Enjoy your family. Y'all have fun. God Bless!

Nicely done Matthew. I think a 12v CO monitor is also a good investment. Like a couple of other comments mentioned, you might want to cut a piece of tubing (slit a piece of garden hose) to protect that fragile fuel line outside. I would be a little concerned about diesel gelling in super cold temps. Maybe you could craft something to direct a little heat to a cover box on the bottom of Lucky. My two cents worth is still just that, inflation or not.

As I have been watching you repairing the heater, I now know why my boss gave up after the 3rd time mine stopped working, and took the van to " Thermo King" and had them replace the whole heater, costing close to $1500!! Best boss ever!! Because my first trip out sent me to North Dakota in -42° weather and I stayed cozy warm that whole weekend!!!

@@JoeZyzyx he puts in the same heaters used for the bunks in the semi's, called espar heater! He also attached a fuel tank, and put 2 lethem batteries in, because also had 3 solar panels on top and a inverter for power, plus a cigarette lighter for the fan in summer! I was driving a van that could hold 3 pallets with bed up, 2 and I still could climb in on side to my bed!

Next time you do your cleaning, try using alcohol to clean the carbon. Once you brush the heavy carbon off the alcohol will make it look like new.I bought the 8k self contained unit to heat my shed and it's just to powerful. I've been getting E-06 code once in a while and when it shuts down I get white smoke coming out of the intake. Unfortunately I vented the exhaust but left the intake in the shed😊. Now me and the shed smell like diesel and my wife is not very happy about it!

If I've seen correct, the pump Is at a higher level than the heater, that's got To be your issue. It must be below it. Also the exhaust seems To be too much backpressurized. You can get rid of that useless muffler and point te pipe facing down, no matter if not getting outside the vehicle

I wonder if you can use that red tar like substance (?) on the fuel line where it goes out that little hole in order to stabilize it from vibration when Lucky is moving so it doesn’t get cut into?

No, my fuel line is the hard line that people keep saying is better - which it is - it’s just stained from the diesel so I guess looks green on camera. The green tubing that everyone curses is very flexible and larger than the hard nylon line I use

Good to see that you take the time to clean your diesel heater. I'm just wondering if a Diesel additive ( cleaner ) would help reduce the build up. Well being a retired trucker, most big trucks have a DPF regen to burn off that build up. Can buy this liquid at crappy tire. Lol it may help.

    • @ricebike
      @ricebike Рік тому +1

Part one video comments suggests kerosene in the diesel fuel???
That synthetic piss called diesel exhaust fluid is for maybe hotter temperatures than a small glow plug fired burn chamber of the diesel heater (that's my guess anyway)

Awsome Job Matthew 👍It's great you moved your heater down to the floor. If you decide to change that rubber gasket between the heater and the mounting plate, Princess Auto has high temp silicone sheet material you can make a new one with. Its better than what comes with the heaters. And make sure the mounting plate is sealed to the floor well👍 you don't want to die from carbon monoxide.
Do you have a carbon monoxide detector?
It's always nice to fix something instead of just replacing it. You will always have a better understanding of how something works. And with how expensive everything is its even more important to learn these skills. Good on you Matthew recognizing the importance of being humble 👏👌
    MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎅🎄
