First Strike Still Deadly has the most gorgeous lead tone ever, Skolnick just nails it. The biggest problem I have with it are that the songs are slower than the originals
First Strike Still Deadly was very necessary and sounds far superior. The drums became what they should have been in addition to a much better production which escaped Testament early recordings when compared to Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax. This was in response to the band not being allowed to remaster the originals, so we got re-recording instead. Very much wanted and needed.
Clayman 2020………… might arguably be the worst and most cringe thing In Flames ever did…. And that’s almost impressive because Siren Charms and Battles Exists.
I thought some of it was ok in regards to quality. Original was probably a 7.5 and the remake a 6.5 imo. I’ve heard worse.i thought Arch Enemy redoing their early work was way worse
Clayman is so painful 😖 In other hand, the re-recording of Into The Great Beyond by Crystal Lake, at the time with Ryo on the vocals, was a fantastic record
One that I think is great is Exhumed's "Gore Metal: A Necrospective." They got their original vocalist back but updated the sound to be closer to their modern output and it sounds killer. Plus if you buy the physical version it comes with the original as well, so you can pick your poison.
You absolutely nailed it, man. I'm so happy that you not only put the 8 string Nothing album in perfection but I was happy to see Opiate in the bottom. All my friends loved the new Opiate so much and when I heard it the first question I asked was... "why?" but it belongs in the bottom. Rareform is underrated?! I thought everyone listened to that. Dig Deep and other albums are really good but Rareform is untouchable. You could write half a new album based on their one song Beserker alone! Every song on that album is a masterpiece. Anthony's vocals sound just as good back then as they do today. Was VERY happy with your "perfection" category.
I would add The Root of All Evil by Arch enemy. Makes earlier albums (mainly burning bridges) sound so much better with Angela on vocals. My fave arch enemy album.
Exodus’s Let There Be Blood will forever be my favorite re-recorded album. I have never understood the love for the original album. Good riffs with GOD AWFUL production; I’m sorry but Paul’s vocals are downright unbearable for me. The re-recording fixed everything, it sounds beefy, mean, and absolutely awesome. I listen to it all the time.
Personally, I'm not as hard on the production as you are, but I agree with you about Paul Baloff's vocals. Honestly I've never really found him a good singer (and we're just talking about BBB here, but please let's not talk about Heathen's demo), I've always thought he was overacting or just trying to imitate some kind of a baboon when he screams (still R.I.P tho). Rob Dukes' vocals are much more energetic and powerful, and in general I really like what he's brought to the band, not just on the BBB re-record but also on SHKM and especially Exhibit B.
I agree on Baloff voice too. Never knew why people like his voice. I also read that Bonded by Blood was hard to record because Baloff couldn't hold the rhytm and was horribly off key.
What I like is that Let There Be Blood is more of a reimagining rather than just re-recording 1 to 1. Im more used to the original and like how raw Paul’s vocals are, but they’re both great albums that reflect where the band was at each time.
5:30 the original release didn’t have Romeo Delight on it, that one was originally on the self-titled album that came out after Metal. For whatever reason they decided to put that one on Metal II and didn’t include the song Operation Annihilation from the original release. Maybe Jeff doesn’t like that one
i remember hearing "berserker" from after the burial on saints row the 3rd, was blown away at how heavy it was. then after that i got to see them in concert, and when they opened with that song i lost my mind. after that show i went to i-tunes to download it, and was never aware it was a re-recording. it still slaps, and for me is one of 2 perfect 10 out of 10 metalcore records.
would've loved to have seen Amorphis - Magic & Mayhem on this list as i think its one of the best rerecording compilations out there, partly because they had their new singer.
I am beyond speechless with the MPE re-release. I have no idea how I missed that, but I am SO glad I did. At this point they pretty much take the cake when it comes to bands who just take a piss on their own legacy.
The original Clayman is one of the best recorded and produced metal albums ever. Period. It is used as a "reference point" for sound and recording for a lot of studios and band. So WHY in the world would you want to mess with it?
I see the the Baloff Exodus and Rob Dukes Exodus as two different bands with two completely different vibes, thus I can really enjoy both the remake and the original Bonded By Blood equally. Same with Testament, I see Skolnik Testament and Skolnik-less Testament as two different entities, and I'd say it still kinda Skolkin-less as you can easily hear that Skolnik is just a guest here and not a permanent reunion yet, First Strike Still Deadly is basically these classics but done in the style of The Gathering, with production that I think was actually ahead of its time. Generally has a heavier vibe to the original, more than necessary, but it might also be because there was a chance that this would had been the last ever recording from Chuck Billy as he was battling cancer the same year. Both are just really great time capsules
I'm a diehard thrasher and I love that raw 80s sound and I agree with you on Let There be Blood, but for me First Strike Still Deadly is actually my favorite Testament album. Crazy, I know, but I do prefer the vocals and production of it and that re-recorded version of Into the Pit is what got me into them. And it's got the best songs from the first two albums put together on one album so for me it's great. I think Testament has only gotten better with time.
Interesting topic!! Sometimes we don't notice how many times bands re-record or remaster some of thier work. The Pestilence one really hurted me as I love the band's work, but it really sux hard production-wise... However now lets add some extra recorda I also find interesting here: ★Amorphis - Mayhem & Magic. It was a very divisive release, some find it unnecessary, but I still love it. Although the old versions of the songs remain fantastic (and darker), the energy and punchiness of these new versions can only be compared with the energy the band sheds live. ★Scorpions - Comeblack. How to make iconic songs to sound tired, souless and boring? Well, Scorpions, somehow, hit the (wrong) bell with this one crafting some re-recorded versiones of their classics, but lacking of any of the energy or dynamics of the original songs. Literally, nor the prodution neither the performances are better in any way here, a total non-sense that, to make it even worse, also includes some awful covers that no one asked for. This one just fails as bad as Clayman XX did, belive me. ★Persefone-Truth Inside the Shades (2020). How you manage to craft a masterpiece from an already iconic and great debut (that had some production flaws ofc)? Well, with the excuse of the record's 15 anniversary, the band released this version that is what the band really wanted these songs to sound like, and they did it perfectly. Flawless re-recoding. ★Acrania - Unbreakable Fury (2020). This crazy mexican buds manage to mix thrash, melodeath, latin jazz and salsa! Their debut had serious production issues due to the low budget, and even when this one might not be their best album, the re-recording gives justice to this fantantic collection of songs. Finally, even though they are not metal, Muse's remasters for Origin of Symmetry XX and Absolution XX are simply fantastic! So rich soundwise! Many bands must learn from them. Cheers from Mexico! 🤘🏻
If you ever do a part 2 I would love adding the Destruction remake compilation (thrash anthems), Trivium (ember to inferno), Anthrax (greater of two evils), arch enemy (root of all evil) and maybe diamond head (they did some songs of lighting to the nations if I recall correctly)
Bonded by Blood made sense when they originally planned it: It's the only album that didn't have Zetro on vocals, and with him back in the band, having him lend his voice finally to their best album made sense.....then he left again, leaving them to push through the concept with their horrible 3rd vocalist Rob. In the end it was a total failure. Testament's re-recording featured some early Zetro material re-recorded by him and they sounded great, so its a shame we never got the full deal on Bonded by Blood.
Stormblast 2005 is awesome. It's a perfect sidegrade to the original. The chunkier guitar tone makes all of the melodic bits hit differently in an equally valid way. And the newly added Sorgens Kammer 2: Electric Boogaloo is great. I'm one of the 5 people who REALLY like new era Pestilence, so I was interested in the rerecordings album to see what they were going to do with the newer tracks. A lot of the appeal of their current stuff comes from how mechanical to the point of feeling cold and venomous it is. This album seems to go for a much more organic mix which is a pretty fresh way to experience these songs. And all of the remakes of older tracks do get spiced up a bit with the bass parts being louder and a bit more noodly. To my surprise, they do enough with these tracks for this release to justify its existence. HOWEVER the guitar tone is absolutely atrocious, nothing has any punch because the kick drum is nonexistent in the mix, and this is probably Pat's weakest vocal performance in a while despite him sounding awesome the last few releases. This one would have been cool, but the sound is so bad that it's borderline unlistenable.
Same thoughts with Pestilence. One of the first OG death metal bands I found and the first one I saw live. Even the new stuff was really fun to see live, but this re-recording is absolute ass.
One of my favorite remasters that released super recently was this metalcore band named SkyCameFalling that remastered their only album 10.21 from the year 2000. They basically improved the general soundscape of the sound especially in terms of atmosphere. Trenches you should definitely check it and the original mix if you haven’t. It’s very similar to the Poison the Well style of metalcore
Now the pestilence one… hurts. Consuming Impulse is so legendary, and well. It’s been ruined with levels of perception. And exactly, knowing that Patrick’s an egomaniac doesn’t make it better 💀
i do want to add that ever since I started listening to the Re-release of Nothing, I haven't touched the original 7 string version. Not once. I think the vocals sound better in the original by a hair but that could just be my mind. They might have used to same exact vocal tracks for all I know.
I think remakes/remasters can have potential. From first-hand experience, I re-recorded the entirety of my first AssassinatoR album because the vocals changed drastically, but i also look back with a "wtf was i thinking" outlook on the way it was originally mixed & recorded. Now i feel like i have a tolerable way of hearing those songs!
Not a re-recording but a remix/remaster, but what's your take on Cynic's Refocus from last year? I've heard mixed reactions and I'm pretty torn on it myself.
Another addition for the WHY? tier is Lacuna Coil's rerecorded and rearranged version of their classic album Comalies. The original was goth metal perfection, and the remake just does nothing for me.
A few i would be curious on your take if you go to do another is Hypocrisy 'Catch 22 v2.0.08', The Crown 'Crowned Unholy', and Zao 'All Else Failed' 2003 version.
Where I agree: After the Burial's Rareform re-recording is definitely their best album. I love it to bits and all the songs hit really hard. They haven't managed to reach those heights since. Where I disagree: Meshuggah's Nothing. The re-recording is fine but it sounds too much like Catch 33 for me. The only good thing about it is the last two tracks were changed a little bit more, but besides that I always stick with the original.
I like them both, but I actually prefer the original version of "Nothing." Maybe I'm just tired of how overused the perfect djent guitar tone has become, but since that record (and using that low of tuning at all) was pretty experimental at the time, I kinda like some of the imperfections, like the strings rattling on the fretboard in "Spasm." The original just has this natural sludginess to it that other Meshuggah albums don't, and I love it
A really good showcase of 80ies Metal done right in the 2000s would be Heavy Metal Thunder by Saxon. Not only does it sound great by production standpoints, even the musicianship is on a completely different level.
“Clayman” re-record sounds like the wiggles, I think the Testament re record is excellent though, I find that allot of 80’s Thrash record quality is bad and it sounds much heavier and better on the re record
Would have liked to hear your thoughts on Flotsam and Jetsam, No Place for Disgrace 2014. It's pretty good for a re-recording even tho Eric AKs vocals don't hit as hard as the original. Like Exodus, another example of a band remaking their most well-known album.
One thing that i dont see talked about a lot that probably also contributes to the amount of people that cant get into black metal is the amount of bands that just arnt on streaming services like tidal or spotify. i only ever see it with black metal, but its pretty common. That clip you played from Nokturnal Mortum sounded really good, but unfortunately they arnt on tidal.
@@wheelsofmercury yep. Just found their wiki and makes sense now... that is another different thing that makes it hard to get into for a lot of people.
When Cavalera released Morbid Visions, given his recent works I expected a quick cashgrab and when Tool released their new version of Sober, I expected an improved rereading of older work. How wrong was I. To my huge surprise it was just the other way around. Indeed Morbid Visions is amazing. And Voivod whether you like "em or not will always be in a league of their own.
Orange Nothing is superior to Blue Nothing for me. Better drum sound (especially in the cymbals and snare) on Orange makes it worth the more raw sound.
No mention of John Bush anthrax versions? I think monster magnet's '' re-imaginings '' are the best as you get the song but doing something else with It giving you 2 pieces of music to choose from.
I'd like to add the 'As the Palaces Burn' 10th anniversary remaster from Lamb of God as 'unnecessary'... Much preferred the rawness of the original 2003 recording...wouldn't even want a re-recording bc I don't like where Randy's vocals have gone since basically Sacrament.....
I feel like Chaosphere had already moved significantly into the djent/groove area. I think Nothing took it even slower and lower in a lot of ways, but I the more overt thrash elements of Destroy. Erase. Improve. And earlier had already largely been shed by Chaosphere to my ears.
Vader's Dark Age was bizarrely disappointing, especially considering they've already rerecorded several of those songs multiple times already between various studio albums and XXV that sound like revitalized versions of those songs. The Dark Age recordings suck all the soul and emotion out of them, i can't even say it's the best mix version either, XXV was still better there too
Good list, surprised Arch Enemy - The Root of All Evil didn't get a mention here. I love the Testament album, i thought the beefier production really benefitted the originals.
I bet this might be a challenge for you but I would like to see a tier list on compilation and remix albums. Like Static-x Beneath Between Beyond and Prongs Power of the Damn Mixxxer.
I really don't understand the need for the re-recording of Meshuggah 'Nothing'; not that the re-recording is bad, but to my ears there is absolutely 'nothing' (pun intended) wrong with the original.. 🤗
An album that should have made the list and definitely would have been at perfection is Revocations rerecording of Empire of the Obscene such an insane album and mega underrated band also Clayman 2020 is worse than cancer
Cavalera worked surprisingly well. I do like Testament’s album too. Can’t really think of anyone else, maybe Diamond Head. Edit: the Annihilator bonus on the last album with Padden is great.
Metal 2 was a massive improvement, I hated Metal 1 but Metal 2 made some of the songs that had great riffs but crap vocals into good songs due to the vocalist being a different person and singing much more like the Annihilator of old. Exodus did a great job improving old songs, Meshuggah is a 100% why because the original sounds better even if its very slight changes Nothing already had an exceptional production. First Strike Still Deadly is THE best rerecorded album of all time, EVERY song is improved and given proper justice with frankly Testaments best release period. I dont even bother listening to the original versions anymore because the rerecorded ones are so much better and that is saying a lot because its some of their best material
Catamenia has a rerecorded album, basically just a compilation of their hits. I personally prefer a lot those rerecordings but a little biased since I heard them first before the originals.
It was complete shit how they kicked him out of the band but I don't see this album (no matter how bad it is) as an insult to Andy. He didn't play on the originals either. A real insult would be if they rerecorded albums from And Death Said Live... onward without him. Not that they would. Andy is the reason those albums are perfection.
Not sure if this should count because of it remaking more than just the artist’s material, but Mr. Bungle’s Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny was one of my favorite records of 2020. Perfection, thrashy perfection 🤘
First Strike Still Deadly has the most gorgeous lead tone ever, Skolnick just nails it. The biggest problem I have with it are that the songs are slower than the originals

I dont really like testaments sound past practice what you preach so I dont care for it

Mr. Bungle’s 2020 re-record of Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny!! Thats how you do it.
The Cavalera rerelease of the first two Sepultura albums was incredible! I usually do not check out rerecorded albums, but that one was crazy good!
Agreed!
Honestly surprised you didn’t include Vader’s XXV. Those re-recordings made those songs next level with the updated tone and production quality.
It's my favourite Vader album, like legitimately.
@@theovermatt it’s in my top 3 for sure with tibi et igni and reign in blood. No particular order.

Soooo damn great

Great suggestion
Only the vocals are rerecorded though and only on the few songs from the first 2 albums
Forgot about this one. Good call!
Destruction - thrash anthems 1 & 2 I think were re-recordings done well

As The Palaces Burn has such a good Remixed/Remastered version.
Such a night and day difference between that and the original
Mors Principium Est firing Andy Gillion was such a bad move for them...
Sup dude, love discovering new stuff on this channel.
11:45 how did the vocals got worse?
You missed Anthrax's Greater of Two Evils imo. I love that album, nostalgia be damned. I will always prefer their John Bush era.
I like them both, but I actually prefer the original version of "Nothing." Maybe I'm just tired of how overused the perfect djent guitar tone has become, but since that record (and using that low of tuning at all) was pretty experimental at the time, I kinda like some of the imperfections, like the strings rattling on the fretboard in "Spasm." The original just has this natural sludginess to it that other Meshuggah albums don't, and I love it
I agree 💯 percent..
A really good showcase of 80ies Metal done right in the 2000s would be Heavy Metal Thunder by Saxon. Not only does it sound great by production standpoints, even the musicianship is on a completely different level.
I know this probably doesn't count, but it would've been cool to get your take on the Cannibal Corpse Vile/Created to Kill "rerecording".
What's your thoughts on Cradle's Cruelty and the beast?
Amazing release but it's remix/remaster but not re-recorded.
“Clayman” re-record sounds like the wiggles,
I think the Testament re record is excellent though, I find that allot of 80’s Thrash record quality is bad and it sounds much heavier and better on the re record
Would have liked to hear your thoughts on Flotsam and Jetsam, No Place for Disgrace 2014. It's pretty good for a re-recording even tho Eric AKs vocals don't hit as hard as the original. Like Exodus, another example of a band remaking their most well-known album.
Damn you for reminding me that Opiate 2 exists.
Pagan Altar's Judgement of the Dead is easily my favorite re-recording.
I'm glad they did First Strike Still Deadly tbh. Those first couple albums were seriously let down by the production imo.
VADER "XXV"
Devourment Butcher the Weak re-recording for pt. 2
I'm really glad they did the rareform reissue. It's much much better. I hate what BOO did with the new reign though. Shoulda left it alone.
Do some research into their history; that’ll tell you all you need to know about why they are not on streaming services…
@@wheelsofmercury yep. Just found their wiki and makes sense now... that is another different thing that makes it hard to get into for a lot of people.
@@zenkrome Yup, and that’s the reason why I don’t listen to them anymore!
I'd have liked to have heard your take on Thy Art is Murder re-recording "Godlike" with their new lead singer.
What, too soon?
They sound so eerily similar you can hardly tell the difference
When Cavalera released Morbid Visions, given his recent works I expected a quick cashgrab and when Tool released their new version of Sober, I expected an improved rereading of older work. How wrong was I. To my huge surprise it was just the other way around. Indeed Morbid Visions is amazing. And Voivod whether you like "em or not will always be in a league of their own.
lol knew the hate was coming for Clayman 2020. Thrash Anthems by Destruction deserves a shout too!
I enjoyed the 2020 remix of Pantera's Reinventing the Steel. The Terry Date Mix, not the 2020 Remaster
Based on this review, I'm going to check out the rerecorded Rareform... Totally agree on Nothing, and wish I had only bought the newer one
The Cavalera re-recordeds are awesome, also love Dimmu Borgir's Stormblast re-recorded!
Call me nuts but I think some of the Greater of two evils sound better than the originals.
I fucking love First Strike Still Deadly idc what anyone says
Yeah man I like how Chuck sounds more guttural.
StormBlast version 2 is GREAT
The original is way better imo.
What did you think on the latest Incubus “Morning View” re-recordings? I thought it was pretty good but Brandon’s voice had weird moments
I didn’t really like what I heard for that reason. Brandon hasn’t had the same energy in almost 20 years
Morning View was their last GOOD album. Their best album besides SCIENCE to me.
Alot of times the original shows us where the band was at that time - we can hear the hunger that gets lost 20 years down the road
What's the Star Wars cutaway at the start of the video from?
Very random but what’s the album in the background - one with the hole in the face? Been searching online for ages lol
They way you were doing this you could've gotten away with including "The Root of all Evil" from Arch Enemy. With Angela doing Johan tracks.
Where's Icon 30 by Paradise Lost, Magic & Mayhem by Amorphis and Onset of Putrefaction?
@@erorufurakku6378 It's because they lost the rights to the original album
He doesn’t like goth metal
What do you think about Paradise lost then? I've only heard one song
I hate the drum sound on Medusa I hope it isn't like that
@@ARONHALLAM It's fine but doesn't replace the original for me
I really don't understand the need for the re-recording of Meshuggah 'Nothing'; not that the re-recording is bad, but to my ears there is absolutely 'nothing' (pun intended) wrong with the original.. 🤗
Man, Clayman 2020 takes the cake. The shit cake! 😂
13:43 agree
Where would you put Icon 30 by Paradise Lost?
An album that should have made the list and definitely would have been at perfection is Revocations rerecording of Empire of the Obscene such an insane album and mega underrated band also Clayman 2020 is worse than cancer
Cavalera worked surprisingly well. I do like Testament’s album too. Can’t really think of anyone else, maybe Diamond Head. Edit: the Annihilator bonus on the last album with Padden is great.
Mr Bungles rerecording of Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny is probably the best rerecording ever 🤩
I know you shit all over The Crown every chance you get (joking... maybe) but they also did a re-recording of their album Crowned in Terror.
I just saw that because I was listening to the original. I don’t HATE The Crown, but I’ve not been impressed with anything from them either
@@MetalTrenches I legit feel bad for you that you didn't enjoy Deathrace King because it's a masterpiece, but to each their own.
The Mors Principium Est one hurt, it was a major middle finger to Andy imo
It was complete shit how they kicked him out of the band but I don't see this album (no matter how bad it is) as an insult to Andy. He didn't play on the originals either. A real insult would be if they rerecorded albums from And Death Said Live... onward without him. Not that they would. Andy is the reason those albums are perfection.
The rerecording of S.U.I.Z.I.D by Bethlehem is definitely one of the albums of all time. It has vocals and music.
100% agree on Meshuggah - Nothing. Fantastic re-recording. One of my favorite metal albums ever.
Terrible and soulless album.
the remaster is like a directors cut with 5 seconds added footage to a 2 hour film
4:35
The old one has the way cooler sound.
Not sure if this should count because of it remaking more than just the artist’s material, but Mr. Bungle’s Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny was one of my favorite records of 2020. Perfection, thrashy perfection 🤘
