- Fans of Coconut Mall were largely disappointed by the BCP rendition. But don't worry, I've done my best to bring this legendary track to its former glory! Prepare to get Coconut Mall'd

Coconut mall is going out of business as everyone switches to online shopping (an observed real world phenomenon)
Only in the US. European Malls are alive and kicking, no less due to their urban planning perspective.
Adam Something has a video on that.
@@JSSMVCJR2.1 based Adam Something enjoyer
Coconut Mall will always be open. The Mushroom Kingdom don’t really have internet in the conventional sense, so most residents would need shopping centres to get what they need.
@@JSSMVCJR2.1 what is the name of the video?
@@7HEMUFFINMAN Malls in the US are Dying, if I remember correctly.
the most important thing for me that gave the original track so much athmosphere was the miis looking at you drive and the soundscape. When youre driving through the track in 8 Deluxe its just the song in the brackground, but driving through it on the Wii, you heard People talking when youre in the Mall and you heard the cars making sounds outside of it in the Background. This sort of audio is so important for making the Tracks feel alive.
Thanks for pointing this out! This kind of environmental sound design is often overlooked, but very important.
Shy Guy Falls wouldn't be the same without the singing Shy Guys you drive past.
That's what made Mario Kart Wii such a masterpiece was the small details for environment sound cues to make it feel almost realistic.
One of my favorites would have to be Moonview Highway where as soon as you enter the city area, sounds of the city take place. Police and ambulance sirens, air planes next to an airport and much much more
sound/audio design is such an underappreciated art both by devs and players. you never notice it until it's subpar/bad or just totally lacking
I feel like the Switch didn’t do enough with Miis
Bro forgor the Miis
It sucks that Nintendo decided to go the cheap route and give us the Tour version in the Booster Course Pack. This video did a fantastic job at showcasing what we are missing out on, it looks great!

Oh my God this is exactly how I remembered coconut mall. All it needs is a high quality version of the wii's music and crowd sound effects. I cannot wait for someone to mod this in and I truly hope you find the time to remake all of the tracks in the booster pass!

I can't wait for the 4 hour video where you update all the models in Luigi's Mansion 2 HD after it comes out.
OMG YES PLEASE
I see you're trying a track that's already in MK8DX this time, nice. You could just apply new textures and lighting, but I know you'll go above and beyond for this project.
Heard of a DS Shroom Ridge remake in Aktan’s channel? THAT’S peak, and I hope more people do it instead of applying textures to tracks only to make them feel… “wrong”.
@@madrid_drive_enjoyer that was just a texture/edit though
@@sg127-youtubesucks Really? At least it was a good one that doesn’t feel out of place compared to others. It actually took more than a few days to make. If I see Water Park trees copy pasted for the 30th time I’ll lose it

oh i never realized why the booster course version made me so uncomfortable until i watched this video-
you gave coconut mall back its sleek 2000's design AND THEN SOME, absolutely beautiful
I always thought it was funny how coconut mall had the same progression of every real life mall I've seen. Loss of life, popularity, anything pretty for the sake of 'modernity' and 'updated safety codes' and becoming lame and gross looking.
Booster Pass' Coconut Mall looks like an actual mall in the US.
Something I thought of with the clothing stores, in Splatoon 3 you can customize a locker. The shirts put in are on a hanger, so that could be used if you could find the models. Also, some hats are on head models, which could also be used.
It really does remind me of that. Also based Splatoon enjoyer

I really love the way 12:23 looks, the lighting makes it look as if it’s evening.
2:13 "And the occasional 'everything blowing up and turning evil'"
The true Blender experience
Next you should try to recreate Koopa Cape because that was extremely nerfed.
Koopa Cape is genuinely one of my favorite tracks in mk8 now and I adore it's visuals so I gladly disagree:) just wished they brought either the fish or the zappy things in the tooooob back
@@imaginationsquare Bring back the enclosed tube with the stream.
Personally I really like what they did with Coconute Mall for the BCP. It takes some visual liberties, but it still looks quite nice (the tile mural in particular looks good).
So, there is a feature called 'tris to quads' that you can use in edit mode. It could have made some of your unwrapping work a little less extremely horrible.
By extremely horrible I meant that it wasn't a fun experience. Not that you did a poor job. You did great and I'm proud of you!
I’m surprised you didn’t use some of the shopping mall props from Luigi’s Mansion 3, those would’ve fit right in!
Love the "Adobe being Adobe" part because it's beyond true.
Great job on fixing Mario Kart 8's Coconut Mall! While I'm not a fan of the default text for Delfino Dream, it doesn't detract from the overall fantastic work you've done on the project. Keep up the good work!
ok charlie look i love the effort that went into this and it looks really really cool but change the delfino dream sign PLEASE!!!!
putting aside the blatant usage of the default blender font (you can select different ones!!), using booleans like this is really unoptimized and i feel it'd function much better if the letters were just conveyed as a normal map lol
Doing gods work out here 😭 This is honestly incredible beyond belief!! Amazing work 🙌🏻 if you choose to do another I would nominate maple Treeway cause my fav wii tracks (coconut mall too) got slaughtered in the bcp and it’s so sad!
Slaughter is too tough, it’s better than the 3ds version and it beats Koopa cape’s grand total of 16 polygons
This guy just fixed Nintendo's mistake! Coconut Mall is my Favorite track and I like it before I knew it was popular. can Nintendo please use this!
I love this guy's stuff cuz he'll be like "So, for this next part, you'll wanna make sure that alpha tracing is on, because if it's off you wont be able to edit the UV angle. And we wanna be able to do that because when we make our vector map, we need to make sure the UV angle is perfect, otherwise we..."
And I'm just like "... Yeah, man. Totally."
As somebody who absolutely DESPISES MK8DX's Coconut Mall, you did a very good job and it brings back the feeling I had when I used to boot up my Wii just to play a 16 track GP of just Coconut Mall. Thank you
This series just never misses. Makes me really want to learn blender so I can do this type of stuff 😂 amazing job!!
this is such a fantastic video. so much work and effort put into probably my FAVOURITE mario kart track. i adore mario kart wii, thank you for bringing some life back into coconut mall
This is such a better version, I really love the little details you added to the stores. It makes it feel like a real lived in world.
this looks soo cool! wish we could see what it looks like in-game
R.I.P. Chesse grater floors, you will be missed
4:58 about those normal map generations... For some textures, you should generate the normal map *before* adding any irregularities to it, what ended up happening is that the tint on the texture affected the normal maps, and not just the squares themselves.
I think you did an amazing job but the final piece missing to really give it that MK8 quality is the baked lighting and post-processing. Fingers crossed that some modder can pick up on this project and see it to the finish line in game!
I adore modding videos that get into the modeling side of things!
I know its to late for this video, but hopefully this helps in the future.
If you go into Edit mode, select all of the faces you want to reset, hit "Mesh" at the top, go to "Normals" and hit "Reset Normals" and Blender will recalculate the normals for the mesh. The one downside is that it also automatically updates (and locks) auto smooth settings, but you can remove that by going to the "Geometry Data" in the Object Data Properties and click "Clear Custom Split Normals Data."
That's actualy crazy how 1 person is more capable than a nintendo team☠️
Is that why Nintendo angry?
Haven’t even finished the video yet but I can already tell the quality the course will reach but if each course really was receiving this intricate care if not moreso than I would have been so much happier with the Booster Course Pass and if they increased it to $30 that’s perfectly fine
This is beautiful, and how did you know the new video sharing service I'm imagining making was gonna be called "!" ?
As an expert in Photoshop, Blender, and Texturing, your work process was hilarious. And your work ethic, attention to detail, and resourcefulness were inspiring. Great video. You should be proud, cause when Nintendo shoved mobile textures onto one of Nintendo's most visually impressive games, my texturer-side was furious.
36:27 In Blender (and rendering in general) every face has a "normal" which basically tells the light which direction the face is facing and which side of that face is the outside of the mesh. Normals are defined in the mesh not the material. If you ever encounter an issue like this again where a model just has the wrong shading, it's probably a normals problem, and there is a way to reset normals. In Blender, select all faces, then Mesh -> Normals -> Reset Vectors.
The level of quality for this video. Sooooooo dang good and the level looks amazing
woow I would love to see this become a series. Where you take rooms from various games and remade them in blender! I would watch every one of them!
For the issue with the shading, use mesh->normals->recalculate outside in edit mode.
It sucks that Nintendo decided to go the cheap route and give us the Tour version in the main game. This video did a fantastic job at showcasing what we are missing out on, it looks great!
F tier design to S TIER DESIGN, NINTENDO HIRE THIS GUY NOW
16:47 I think it's supposed to be mountains, Fitting the theme of the outdoor store
12:22 This sentence sums up most of texture work lol
About 36 mins in at the part with the weird shading, try selecting all the geometry in the object, then press m, then click “by distance”
You aren't being put in the corner, but you must understand that the metal stairs are upset.
Other than that, this is absolutely solid work. Both the track and the video are very passionate.
22:07 as a 3D artist myself that line just cracked me up XD so relatable lol
Everyone knows that the cheese grater is the best part...
My only big issue with the BCP version was the lack of anti-grav on the curved stairs, it seemed so obvious to me!
I loved this video so much! The nostalgia is crazy.
I hope someone mods this to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe because I would love to be able to play this updated version.
Okay i hoped that the cheese graider comes back because it is my favorite part of the track 😢 but i love the rest😅
Nintendo fans do what NintenDON’T this is amazing!!! This is genuinely a work of art, props to you 👏🏼
Is it bad that I thought going through those rails on the 3ds looked like the inside of a washing machine?…
out here doing gods work
1:12 I might be late to the party on this one but is that vegetas battle suit in the window
For the water in the fountain I'm sure you can just animate a gif of a water particle effect and billboard it over the fountain.
8:29 the reason you need to turn on raytraced refraction is so eevee knows to trace light rays going through the material to simulate transparency! also it's IOR not IQR lol. it stands for "index of refraction", which is a measure of how much light bends within the material. glass is usually around 1.5 and water is 1.333, for example.
also, i looked into swapping all of the opaque materials to alpha blend, and apparently the only way to do that is with a python script. so that's annoying. i'd link the stackexchange post here but i think youtube would block it, sorry. it should be one of the top results if you google "blender bulk change material settings" though.
sorry for the long post but this is super cool!!!
That's crazy that I've read that as IQR for years now lol, thanks for the info!
If I were a woman, this right here is how a guy would win my heart
I never liked the fact that they watered down the Wii maps with the pretty bland Tour ones, so I'm glad to see this
a tip for that bit where you fixed the tiling of the steel texture: try the "offset" filter in photoshop! it does what it says on the tin, offsetting the layer by an amount you specify, but it'll also wrap back around the other side! great for fixing texture seams!
I'll have to try that, thanks!
Beautiful work! I've been wanting to learn blender for awhile but every time I try it feels overwhelming and like I'm in over my head. Anyway It looks way better than the BCP version, my only critique from someone who has NO experience using professional 3d modelling or texturing software is I think the tree bark texture on the palm trees looks a bit harsh and out of place--i think it'd look better smoothed out somehow if that makes since
I wonder which Mario Kart race track you'll update next?
10:50 You can select the vertices, right cligk and use one of the align options
Neat fixes, I like what you did! though I feel like having an unrendered normal version of it compared to a more-polished redo of it in the thumbnail is kind of a disingenuous initial comparison
Yeah sort of, I was really just too lazy and burned out to set up fancy renders for the old store by that point lol. And why should I when "thumbnail thumbnail ugly left pretty right me click video" and all that. Either way glad you enjoyed the video!
Here we go again... 🥳
I like the details, but I would have prefered the orange tones of Mk8D. they have a nice summer vibe :D

Thank you for this amazing project ☺️☺️☺️💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
24:08 Easier solution: *Filter > Other > Offset*
Set the offset amount to half of the image's resolution on both fields
Then fix seams
Then apply offset again to set the texture back to normal

Thank you!
This looks absolutely incredible!
Awwww no chesse grate ramp? :,o only minor but this looks amazing!
rip cheese grater, you won't be missed
You should try and get in contact with the guys making CTGP Deluxe for mario kart 8 deluxe and maybe the custom version could be implemented into the game as a replacement for the original, or as an option.
Booster Pass' Coconut Mall looks like an actual mall in the US.
Yo I have another idea, you should do a video about speed racer the video games detailed areas, there’s so many of them
This would be insane in vr chat
I gave MK8 a hard time for altering the retro tracks to the point where they were barely recognisable.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved the idea of an RC kart style track. But why the hell did they have to pretend it was Ribbon Road from the GBA? Why does Tick Tock Clock from the DS no longer look like the SM64 level it’s based on? Since was there a Chain Chomp on Cheese land from the GBA? The track isn’t even flat anymore!
Was it just the visuals bothering me? Well no, because then we have Royal Raceway from the N64. On the original track, you could ditch the race to explore the area around Peach’s Castle. But in Mariokart 8, they fenced the area off, taking away one of the best things about the track.
I was beginning to wonder if I was showing my age, nobody else seemed to have these issues. But seeing this critique of the new Coconut Mall, and the work put into making a better version, maybe it’s not just me, maybe Nintendo really did drop the ball. They have been doing that a lot more often in recent years.
I will say this though, Wario’s Gold Mine was a great improvement over the original.
If Mario Kart 8 knew how to Remake Retro Tracks
you know that you could just had rework the normals by selecting all the models in object mode, pressing a to select all vertex and then going to edit on the top of the screen and go to normals and set outside,it will restart the normals to the common normals based on were the angles of the vertex extrude, meaning it is a perfect fix and rework in just 2 presses of the a button and 5 clicks
Can I suggest for the toy store the Mini Mario and friend's would be a cute Easter egg forgot to say please do Daisy's cruiser
Now, this is the coconut mall we know and love
honestly, you should set this up as a VRChat map also
The grass triangles did nothing wrong.
As a Public Bathroom myself I must say....Mom?
Is there any way to mod this into the game to actually race with the new version?
I think what you saw as jpeg compression is supposed to be a wax layer? Or something similar?
I have a bit of a conspiracy theory that all the booster courses are ports of Mario Kart Tour courses.
Like... the courses are way too similar to the mario kart tour versions of themselves.
Please tell me I'm not the only one that sees this.
Ah yes, computering
Coconut mall looks dead now because everyone's shopping online now... Sigh, not even Mario Kart could save it from mall death...
Fun to watch. Thank you for the video!
37:04 you could’ve just recalculate the normals
the only thing its missing... the miis dotted around the place... where are they...
