What a perfect video for today! I have a game project that I just started planning that I want to tell a deep story using mostly the environment, no dialogue. Thank you!
I've been really enjoying your videos! As someone who's only built a handful of smaller games, it's very motivating seeing someone working on a larger passion project in such a thoughtful manner. Thanks for sharing your approach and inspiring others!
Do you do contract work? Not necessarily now, but just in general? Would love to add you to my list of available pixel artists. I've contracted work out before and plan to do it again in the future.
Your art is incredible, but i was looking at gameplay pices in video where you told about your journey with this game, also watched what you showed here, for me sometimes it's hard to see where character body starts. I understand you have color scheme, but often some parts of character blend with something in bg. My thought is, when player with low skill will be in stressful situation in underground areas where character blend in the most, it can be really frustrating. I know, all people are different, and there is a lot of people who will have zero problems with this cz of bright spots (hair and the shirt), but for me it's still confusing and I'm not even playing. Also I think if person will have any kind of colorblindness it will be much harder for them. I think looking at levels in grayscale will help to find problematic places. Just it will be a shame, if some people will have less of a good time with a game just cz their brains are a bit stupid like mine.
Idea for game-feel and immersion: Instead of making him "drop through" a bridge or platform, make him crouch and kind of hop down off the side, perhaps with a small dust effect to suggest his boots or pants scraping the platform/bridge as he lowers himself. This'll remove some of the arcade-like feel and give it more of an exploratory one. Obviously, how quick the animation is, among other factors, can either enhance further the feeling of exploring, or the sense of speed and movement.
I absolutely love how organic your design process is. Thank you for letting us into the world you're building for Insignia. It just looks and feels incredible. Phenomenal work!
Man, your videos are by far some of the most useful and informative resources I have come across. I very much appreciate your presence here on UA-cam . Thank you !
omg Thanks so much for sharing this info Adam. I'm in the beginnings of being a GameDev myself. All this info as I'm watching and typing is definitely going to be super helpful to me. Already bookmarked this into my gamedev playlists. hope ya make more like this. :)
Looking at the geometry of your stage is super interesting, I usually make a basic rectangle hallway. From now on ill break em up for than nice uneven natural look
I feel your strategic and constructive approach and time management and his RNG make and break or rather break and make attitude could lead to an interesting exchange of inspiration :D
Hi, I'm just curious what the pixel size of your sprite and tilemap is. It looks way too detailed to be the standard 32 x 32 that is common in pixel art (games).
you should totally make an "art of insignia" concept art book. There is so much great stuff here.

I was just thinking about this very topic this is such a treat from the universe 😭
Great video! What tool are you using for your mood boards and video presentations? Looks a lot like Miro Board
I think he uses Leonardo
Leonardo
@10:33 That's what I tell myself everytime, but I usually don't realize I haven't until I'm on like "Layer 23"
I love how his crappy thrown together sketch would be my magnum opus lol
what software do you use for your art/pixelart/think tanking ?
Lake totally gives me Princess Mononoke vibes :) Inspiring video! What app are you using for your concept exploration? Krita?
It helped a lot
Hi, I discovered your channel few weeks ago, and you videos are awesome ! Thanks a lot !
Hi Adam, great video! What's the tool you are showing to layout your world building overview? : )

Not first, but not last

you're one of the better educators. thnx for not having a terrible pedagogy.

It was really confusing and overwhelming to make environments before. This was great for giving a structure to try and experiment further. Thanks :)

Hey I'm curious to what that large area you transition to that has all your ideas pictures and drawings in with the purplish background.

Based on your personalities i think you could become good friends with the dude from Miscast. Even though your field of Arts is completely different..
I think the comparison is a good one. His channel has a great vibe! It'd be cool to connect with someone from another discipline.

Hey Adam :) what is the name of the tool where you created your "mindmaps" in?
Those living bridges are so cool! I gotta put those on one of my mood boards, too XD
Hallo Adam
This is exactly what I needed, thank-you Adam :)
this is extremely interesting, great video!

I'm curious how you did the procedural rain. I did mine with the particle system that follows the player, but I'm not happy with it
I did the same thing. It should be fine, as long as the particle physics use world space and not local space so they don't follow the emitter around.

It's made up of 16x16 tiles, but the map edges can be 3-4 tiles deep.
program?
what is the name of the app you use to draw?
out of the aseprite
amazing video!! please do a tutorial on natural background elements like trees, rocks, grass etc
