Thank you for your fine tribute to Gilnockie and the Border Rievers. Every Armstrong heart swells with pride at the mention of his name. Invictus Maneo, McGillilaidair.
I'm of Armstrong blood descended from Johnnie .. my mothers maiden name is Armstrong - she was born in Belfast. and our more immediate ancestors seem to be dotted all over Northern Ireland (especially Ballymena and surrounding areas) as far back as the 15th Century. My mother lives on the Causeway Coast these days, although she was christened in the Church of Scotland in Belfast - so it seems that although generations of Armstrong's in our family adopted Ireland as their home .. they never truly lost their Scottish roots! Your videos are fab by the way .. keep up the good work & thanks!
This is awesome, in American born also direct decent. I'm working towards a trip to see the land of my roots and perhaps our paths might cross, with respectful intentions for my part. I always loved the legend based on this man and only recently do I understand why. 😊

This is a really well made video history of Johnnie Armstrong. Really useful for anyone wishing to find out a bit more about the untold turbulent Border history and the Armstrong's key part in it. Before his murder at Carlenrigg, Johnnie Armstrong was building a magnificent hall downstream from Hollows/Gilnockie tower which is actually located just outside Canonbie. It's stone was used to build the nearby bridge, the view up the Esk to Gilnockie tower is beautiful. Well done Mark Nichol on a great story well told. Thanks.
cool from my father side all the why back in time jonnie my great grandfather we armstrongs have a very very long history there and long king lines this is so cool to see your video ty for showing
There's a lot of Armstrong's across the world. I was shocked myself to find this out after searching my father's family. Btw, hello to my Armstrong cousins.
I'm a liddle directly descended from him. I'm glad to see people are so interested in my family history I have strong roots with powerful people, famous, and royal. Glad too meet some family members.
I just got home from visiting the Johnnie Armstrong of Gilnockie, and really enjoy listening and watching your video. Awesome. Really made my family's day.
I've known the story for some time, just found out that I too am descended from Johnny Armstrong, hard to believe, but it explains a lot. Thanks for the look around the sights, and the insight.
Thanks for the video! I've never knew my family history was so interesting. I got a border collie dog about a year and a half ago and was doing research on their origin and I just put 2 & 2 together and found this video. I don't know my family line past my great grandfather, we are from southern Appalachia US. I can't wait to learn more from your videos mentioned here and read those books also.
My great great Grandfather John Blackstock of Dumfries married Jean Armstrong, a descendent of Johnnie I was told. My grandfather named his house Gilnockie.
thank you for posting this video. the names are very familiar from discussions with my DAD BY THE FIRE DURING LONG EVENINGS OF MY YOUTH, BUT I HAVE NEVER ACTUALLY SEEN WHAT THE PLACE LOOKS LIKE. WHAT A BLESSING THAT THE WEATHER COOPERATED SO NICELY FOR A BEAUTIFUL DAY. MY COMPUTER HAS JUST ABOUT HAD IT USUALLY THE SHIFT KEY DOES NOT WORK AND NOW I GET ALL CAPS, GO FIGURE. THANKS AGAIN. NOT ONLY WAS JAMES I TREACHEROUS BUT HE WAS ALSO A REAL WANKER, MUST HAVE BEEN A REALLY LOVELY DESPOT.

MY FIRST GRANDCHILD. I LOOK FORWARD TO VIEWING YOUR OTHER VIDEOS. THANKS MIKE
Warning - Don’t read the subtitles if you struggle with the accent. UA-cam translation sure hates Scottish accents. Not once did he mention IKEA but somehow UA-cam thought he did 😂 good video man, when u feel at home amongst Armstrong’s 😇. my grandpa was a member of the clan. ⚔️ Invictus Maneo ⚔️
Thomas of Mangerton was the clan head, and Johnnie a younger brother, but when Tam and Mangerton were raized to the ground, our Johnnie took over, and was a better character than his brother. James IVth of Scotland (Father of Mary Queen of Scots) decided that the Armstrongs were just too dangerous, and could call great numbers to ride with him! Alas the Scottish King was jealous of him, as well as wanting the "Debateable Lands" settled, decided poor Johnnie had to go, and hung him and his loyal men at Caerlinrig, and left many Fatherless bairns and women trying to eke out a living to bring them up!
Hello I am a direct descendant of Johnny Armstrong of girl I am also a direct descended of King James v I have a lot of research history and I would love to give him contact with you
when we visit there next it will be the first thing we take to the new lands here in Canada. ( sneakily now though, the same way we all got the origional horses to begin with...) although it is under roof and guard, I am sure with the help of the near clans we can all fund a "extrication chopper" to remove said stone of blasphemy! true christians do not curse! lol!

Try reading "The Steel Bonnets " by George McDonald Fraser. Written based on records but a very readable a fantastic book which you cannot put down
Also check out Chronicles of the Armstrongs. Great book that deals only with our history.
Previous comment intended for another video. Sorry, Mark.
