      Carolina would not be Carolina without him no matter how much success Roy has! The athletic director who kept Dean on during the chaotic mid '60s struggles when some fans wanted him hung out to dry was the smartest decision that AD ever made

    Wolf-Pack got their revenge! acc tourny of all time 2024 5 games 5 days legendary hopefully they make a strong run and show the country that its still a team game at end of day & win the championship the hottest team going possibly ever especially after losing 4 straight to end season the old saying everything starts back at 0 when tourny's start still hold true who knows maybe cardiac pack back baby! Such comrodery by this team by epic proportions been 37 years since acc champs now go end the 41 year drought and become champs of the world!

    An amazing run by NC State in this tournament. Was pretty much expecting a Carolina-Duke final, but State had a great tournament. Still think this was one of Coach Smith's best coaching jobs. This team looked awful when they were 0-3 in the ACC. It's a damn shame they could not win the title being it was Coach Smith's last season.

      uncbb89 It would have been nice if they did, if they didn't run into Arizona in the National Semifinal game. I think they would have beaten Providence and would have beat Kentucky to win the Title that year. I'd say that if Dean had stuck around the next season, then no question that Carolina would have won the title. They would have lost about 1-2 games.

      They actually went to the Netherlands (Serge Zwikker Homecoming games) and played several games during Christmas break. Smith would say years later that he felt the 0-3 start was in part due to the travel and games played over there. Who really knows for sure but at least they got it turned around. Arizona played amazing that tourney, beating 3#1 seeds.

      It was the last three minutes against NC State the first time Carolina played them which was the make or break of Carolina's entire season! State, if you remember, had a nine point lead in Chapel Hill with like 2 1/2 minutes left! That was how close Carolina came to being 0-4 in the league! Had they not rallied to win that game, who knows how their campaign ends up! That '97 season was, to me, the high water mark of Dean's coaching genius because he had to replace his entire backcourt on top of that with McInnis turning pro and Calabria's graduation

    Why Ed Cota didnt start this game.

      Ed Cota normally didn't start his frosh yr and the following year they had a rotation of 6 starters that switched every game.

      Todd Pegram he does die hours later. It’s only about 4pm or 5pm out in LA during this game and he was shot closer to Midnight. SMH

    If Dean had stayed just three more years he could have won a third chanpionship (with Jamison and Carter) and it's possible Roy would have come immediately.

    • @bradlewis6514
      @bradlewis6514 3 роки тому

      Maybe, but Roy did not wanna bail on the class he had recently recruited to KU at that time! He made that clear (particularly to Henrich, Gooden and Collison)! I've also said, and this doesn't include all Carolina fans, but I've felt over the years that because Carolina is the program they are - they're are some who've taken what Roy has done for granted! Carolina was in a dire transition after their disastrous 8-20 season of '02 and the in-team turmoil between players and Doherty! And alot of people don't realize that even the second time after Dean that the position came open, it was only a guarantee Roy took the job because of Kansas' change in athletic directors! He and Bob Frederick were very close friends/co-workers and Frederick decided to resign following the '02-'03 season! Williams made it known he did not like Frederick's replacement and I think that made his decision to leave Lawrence much easier! Had Frederick stayed on, Carolina's renaissance may have waited a while! Those that assumed and are so spoiled by Carolina's success under Roy and well before need to take a second and appreciate rather than rubbing Carolina up everybody's noses! Not all but there are those who act all arrogant and greedy from the constant winning and tradition

      They only had expected Guthridge to coach a year! When he decided to stay on, that may have also played a part in delaying Roy coming to Chapel Hill

      @@bradlewis6514 It's too bad Guthridge didn't leave Doherty the same level of talent that Smith left him.
