In-studio performances featured in the 8-CD/1-DVD box set include a John Peel Session (1998), Drivetime and Mark and Lard appearances (2003) and a glorious Radio 1 Live Lounge performance (2008). Live broadcasts include a rough-and-tumble show from Nottingham’s Rock City (1984), the stunning 1995 Milton Keynes Monster Tour (their first after a six-year break), a blistering 1999 Glastonbury headline set and an invitation-only 2004 show at London’s St James’s Church.

Someone not afraid to be close to his fans. Sure, security close by, but he knows people just want to make another connection. The touch is a very powerful way to communicate, learn, show we care (plenty of negative ways of course). I'm also sure that it worked both ways, he got energy from those people, felt the connection.
It was a different time back then. In the 90s all was good.
It gave me goosebumps. That was extremely cool of him to share himself like that.
I honestly think that I can name 50 different rock/metal singers who do this in EVERY SINGLE CONCERT (still today). Every time I go to a festival-type of concert I see like 10 different bands doing this. Not to take anything away from their experience, just saying that is not that uncommon.

Writers, musicians and artists write a song knowing in the generation of the polulation they speak to is understanding a segment of time when this song was written...ironiclly the song has many channels describing the artist who wrote the song unkowing the future....proves this song lives through many generations of knowing and the unknowing of our present and future...Good Art.

I saw them Manchester in '99 when they played this pete buck's rickenbacker was cutting out as they really got us all bouncing. They tried playing it again but no joy that beautiful ricky went flying across the stage! Stipe stood on a monitor and sang suspicious minds as the techies did their thing . I d love to see that posted .amazing nite amazing gig.
Bit late to comment but I was there too, it was a class moment! Showed how tight they were to be able to do that, the transition was so smooth and totally entertaining! Those that just know them for the mandolin and bongo stuff of the early 90's don't realise how much of a fast and loud rock and roll band they were, that could rock harder than many of their "heavier" contemporaries. Best rock band of my lifetime for sure

I saw them a few more times in Manchester (my home town) at old Trafford cricket ground some of the support acts were good badly drawn boy at one and another time it was when the killers amongst many ..i think the 1st band came on about 4pm.? I listened to an interview Michael Stipe gave recently and he was asked if it was the end if the world. He said "no, its a reset." Beautiful, hopeful message. I love him, got to hear R.E.M. in the early 1980's
