I second this. I usually work very small and tight, but I've got a huge pad of newsprint I use with charcoal when I want to just be loose and gestural. It's quite freeing, and the charcoal feels really good going onto the newsprint.
I could watch you paint watercolor circles all day, lol. I’m amazed at how perfect they are, they look like colorful moons. Curious, did someone make you sit and do circles for hours? How did you get so good at it? They’re even all the same size. 😊

Hi, this is my first video of you. And i must say that i really love how you presented other artist and tools as well. You seem a nice calm person and i like watching your video. Keep on ❤🌷
You will love the artist's way. I've done it twice now. Great to do morning pages everyday but when it wanes its amazing to start them up again when life feels overwhelming. It helps finding your voice and get the "one step in front of the other" feeling back 🎨🌞🧘
wonderful video as always! i love watching your first reactions to supplies, and i envy your collection of art supplies! years of hobby i suppose, haha! love seeing your videos !
Thanks so much! Some of my supplies are over 30 years old now, but I feel very lucky that I'm making some money from my art now, and am able to buy supplies that take my fancy!
I wasn't as strong as you when it came to the new Roman Szmal colors. I had been waiting for quite a while for the Aquarius Violet to be released as I had seen Elisabetta swatch it a couple months ago. And of course, then I saw other new colors that made their way into my cart. (?) I had also been waiting for the Khadi Fat Book to come back in stock at Jacksons since I had seen you use that sketch book. It finally came back in stock. All reasons good enough for me to place an order (like I really needed a reason). Here I am, waiting for my Jackson's order to arrive. What can I say, my will power is weak when it comes to art supplies. 😊
You can easily make your own supergranulatigranulated paint. Just add PBk11 (Mars black) or DS sodalite or transparent iron oxide watercolor paint to any other paint to make it granulate. That's basically how Schmincke makes theirs. You'll save a bundle of money.
Just letting you know that charcoal is another form of soft pastel whatever you wanna call it so you’re best off using pastel paper for it. You won’t get so much dust.
22 years ago. I had a Aupair girl for 6 months . She had that book with her. She gave it to me when she returned back to her country. I have went back to that book many times over the years. It has help me to grow a lot. Writing morning pages. Now 4 years every day . So important tool. That book started something on me. And have literally carry me on at the hard times... It have help me a lot. After i did the next book from her "Gold vein". And now I have the third one about "seeking wisdom"😊 Art have become for me a inner child playground. And I'm happy and fine with that.
Well, I have to have a load of blood tests done at the doctors first, but AFTER that it will be fun 🤣 I feel like I've been having a good time flitting around all the different mediums, but am wondering if it's time to actually put some work in, and try and improve in a specific way, or figure out if I actually have my own style, or will ever be able to produce things I'm really pleased with. I'm hoping the book will at least give my thinking some pointers.
You might have discovered this already, but, in my opinion, the very best putty eraser is by Faber Castell and it's gray. I like the large one. It's fantastic with pastels.

They all pretty much do this and it’s like nails on a chalkboard 😂 and I hated having to use them in drawing class back in art school! Needless to say, I haven’t picked up one since then which was nearly 20 years ago😂 One thing I don’t need more of is more paint (I even have a whole set up to be able to make my own colors completely from scratch), but I still refuse to have it be the one thing I won’t ever stop buying! 😂 Those paint colors are gorgeous! I don't think I'd use oil pastels on Pastelmat, personally, because I think they stick pretty well on other (cheaper surfaces), and I think the oil pastels would get used up pretty quickly on such textured paper. I haven't used Pitt Pastel Pencils before, just the Derwent ones, but my understanding is that Caran D'Ache pastel pencils are the best, then Pitt and Carbothello pastel pencils are also well regarded. I think some people don't like the Derwent ones as much, but I've got nothing to compare them too. Edit: Just to add - I've seen artists use Pastelmat for oil pastels, so it does work really well with them.
Thanks for your recommendations. I guess I’m a creature of habit & as I like Derwent & Schmincke, especially the granulating paints you’ve showed us, I stick to same but, will look at CaranD’Ache too. Thanks
The Faber-Castell kneaded eraser is so good. After trying a number of others that were just stiff, I tried it and I love it! PS This was such a fun video!
In general I'm inclined to agree with you, and live fairly frugally in most areas of my life. However, I derive enormous joy from following my curiosity about art materials, and with limited space, I re-sell or give away the things that become less used. I've always made my hobbies pay for themselves and art is no exception, but ultimately... each to their own!
My love of art supplies is also my hobby. As a bonus I get to crate with them. People have all kinds of hobbies that bring them joy. If I couldn't afford it, that would be a different story. This might sound weird but my art room has a certain scent which I know emanates from all the supplies I have in that space. I love that scent and just sitting in that room basking in it. It's like aroma therapy (IMO). My happy place. As you said, to each their own. @helencryer
I, for one, have no intention of stopping the “madness”. It’s better than spending a paycheck on a case cheap bourbon every few days. (Yes, I’ve had relatives with that unfortunate affliction.)

I think some people don't like the Derwent ones as much, but I've got nothing to compare them too.
Edit: Just to add - I've seen artists use Pastelmat for oil pastels, so it does work really well with them.
And yes! I'm excited about using water with the compressed charcoal! Almost like ink!
@@helencryer Look forward to examples in your works.
Thanks for your recommendations. I guess I’m a creature of habit & as I like Derwent & Schmincke, especially the granulating paints you’ve showed us, I stick to same but, will look at CaranD’Ache too. Thanks
Coloured pencils are wonderful on pastel at too
I hadn't thought about that! Does it not use up the pencils very quickly?
Putty rubbers work better if you knead them till they look like a smooth blob. It’s then easier to shape them and they pick up media better
Thanks ever so much! I'll do that!
The Faber-Castell kneaded eraser is so good. After trying a number of others that were just stiff, I tried it and I love it! PS This was such a fun video!
Always interesting ... and I don't do multi-media. Seems too hard for my soft brain.
I've just done a video on why I end up doing mixed media - basically because I make a mess of the lower layers!!
Fingers in ears "la la la la la la la la la la". Those scratchy butt pencils will never be on my 'want' list. I would say that charcoal is not my jam.
🤣
Stop the madness!!! no more supplies.. no more stuff... use what we already own until it is gone and THEN buy more... Stop the Madness!!!
No she can do as she pleases! It's her life and her money, who are you to say this crap?! If you don't like it then don't watch.
@@Lia13_ Thank you!
