- Licorice Pizza Q & A with Alana Haim, Cooper Hoffman and director Paul Thomas Anderson following screening on 11/11/21
Here's Part 2 - • Licorice Pizza Q & A w...
In the San Fernando Valley in 1973, teenager Gary Valentine meets Alana Kane, a young woman in her 20s and photographer's assistant, at his high school on picture day. They become friends, start a waterbed company together, audition for films, and get involved with Joel Wachs' mayoral campaign. They navigate a changing time politically and culturally while also dealing with a gas crisis. Valentine and Kane's journey leads to them interacting with figures of both Old and New Hollywood, including Jon Peters and Jack Holden (William Holden).

This man makes me want to be a filmmaker.
Lol same here
Oh brother…
I mean already wanted to make movies anyway, what is the issue with paul lol?
Very fitting feeling. As PTA is a filmmaker that didn’t go to film school. Self taught and love for films
Sammme!
Philip Seymour Hoffman was my favorite actor; I still miss seeing him in new projects. I was quite impressed with Cooper in the film (I just saw it), and of course, he reminded me of his dad.
wow, Cooper’s mannerisms are identical to his dad’s
I was watching the video and thinking exactly the same thing and then i saw your comment.
Watching him really made me miss PSH
🥲
i first thought he is Richard Linklater,
How the fuck did I not know he's PSH's kid until now???
I love the fact that not only does Cooper look like his dad & have his mannerisms, he also dresses like him.
he's got the same vibe...amazing
and that's where the similarities end because he doesn't have his Dad's acting abilities. At least in this film he didn't.
@@charlesknowlton7198 he doesn't have to be exactly like his father was. He acts very well, he's so charismatic and natural and he's got talent. That's enough.
@@scarlet2690 That may be enough for you but not me. Glad you liked his performance. I'm hoping Anderson can see the error he made before he puts him in another film.
@@charlesknowlton7198 fortunately, his career doesn't depend particulary on you. A lot of people liked his perfomance so if you don't like it don't watch it. :)
This is a director that understands so much the viewer and how to make us be a part of the movie, to take us into the experience, it was really a wonderful and refreshing film
Can't belive that people cancelled this movie
@@gregoriomassa8529 why? It was amazing. I was a teenager in this time but in uk and that’s what it was like.
@@debb6393 becuse the age Gap . But the movie is SO MUCH more than that , and the characters are so amazing.
@@gregoriomassa8529 totally agree, it’s moved me profoundly. Puts me in mind of Gregory’s girl with elements of the innocence of being that age and learning about relationships, a week later I’m still thinking about it.
well he sure didnt care about the viewer during inherent vice lol
I’m seeing Phillip Seymour Hoffman and I’m thanking god for genetics because this kid is a spitting image…and PSH was inimitable. Nostalgic and grateful
it’s unreal how much cooper looks, acts and sounds like his dad.
Power of the Y Chromosome!
Doesnt sound much like him
The connection between the three of them and ,of course, Alana's mom and Cooper's dad is kind of kismetly crazy. I remember the Licorice Pizza record chain and the gas crisis, the 70's decade is key to my life so cannot wait to see this movie. I think it will be the very first movie that I will see on the big screen since the pandemic.
How was it bro
Loved the film - im curious what do you mean about the connection between Alana's mom and Mr. Phillip Seymour Hoffman?
@@danielstoursvideo I think he meant those two people who were very important in paul's life and were also the parents of the two main actors in the film
Seeing this movie is the only Christmas present I want ! I remember seeing Boogie Nights at Universal City Walk when it came out. I loved it and was blown away being from the Valley. I proceeded to promote the film to all my friends and family. Been a HUGE fan ever since. I live in Chatsworth now and this movie was filmed out here. Punch Drunk Love too. Respect to the Valley ! Thanks PTA , cast and crew for all the beautiful work !!! ❤
Boogie nights!!👍🏻👌🏻 same movie that put me on this life long PTA journey
Yeah seen boogie nights like 20 times, it’s a whole world it’s such an impressive film for Anderson at the age of like 27. PTA never disappoints
unfortunately Licorice pizza is his worse movie. And this is coming for a PTA fanboy
@@jonathanhart2459
Get some taste . It was wonderful film.
@@twomindz79
By “get some taste” you mean that you approve of adults falling in love with minors?
Don’t know why the interviewer had to bring up Phillip. It pretty clearly cut down PTA, you can tell by his voice and extended stuttering that it made him feel sad. The interviewer could have just avoided that question, especially since he was saying the question in front of Phil’s son. Could he really think of nothing else?
To ask I mean.
Maybe… but if you’re gonna hire the dude’s son… no doubt questions will pop up from the interesting relationships 🤔
@@jqyhlmnpHim getting that question was expected and it’s probably been asked before, but based on Paul’s reaction I think it was inappropriate in that moment.
I wonder if that was the reason Cooper didn't want to be there. He was so nervous, and it takes an introvert to know an introvert so that's how I knew that there was something more to him not enjoying the conversation. He seems sharp, he probably knew that it was coming and tried to prepare himself for it. It's, again, an introvert trick. And it can definitely work against people like us in certain situations. I agree with you, I think he could've been at least 10 times more sensitive to the people in front of him and respect their love and neverending grief for Philip.
@@jqyhlmnp the dude's name was Philip and his son's name is Cooper. You can ask in advance if it would be OK to talk about his bond with his dad and his legacy for a little while rather than tackle him on stage where he can't really say stop. There are ways to approach a conversation like this one. And it starts with respect which the interviewer never gave the two Hoffmann "dudes".
I don’t ever wanna imagine films without PTA, when he’s gone, it’ll be a huge loss
Cooper has all of his fathers gestures it’s amazing 🤌
Thanks so much for uploading, drop part 2 please 🙏 🙏🙏
I enjoyed this movie so much. Charming the whole way through.
Aww... This is lovely, and everyone seems nice.
Glad he explained where the title came from which is much better than the original it was going with "Soggy Bottom". Was wondering where "Licorice Pizza" came from. Also, glad the production bought a bunch of my artwork for the set design of the "teen fair" scene, but unfortunately only makes a glimpse in the background.
love this film
Thank you!!
This is great. Thank you for posting it 🙏
Just Brilliant!
I really like the way he approaches his films.
Do you support child molestation? I love his film making skills, but I reject pedophilia. Shame on him for making this movie.
@@Lee-xn8by this film is not pedophilia for christ sake.
Yooo what kinda shoes PTA rocking?! Those are fly…

day lewis probably made it himself
@@easa9999 lol
i knoww
Did anyone ID them yet lol
The resemblance between Cooper Hoffman and his father (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is actually scary.... literally looks and speaks just like him
Such a great film
this press conference is LOVE!
pta baked out & stuttering on some weird hybrid strain 〰️
can't wait for this flick 🍕
hank you for sharing. so cute interview
Should’ve made it clearer that there’s a PART 2 in the description!
I think he finally able to recreate the 70s of his youth. There is elements of reality in this PTA movie...Goetzmen and PTA come from the same well. PTA is able to be nostalgic without being mawkish.
Soon as I saw "A Ghoulardi Film Company" I was back in Akron, Ohio with cousins Patty and Donnie and Freddie and Denise McCardle watching Big Chuck on Friday nights...
What a storyteller!
I could listen for way too much time so I'll have to restrain myself not to go on a streak of PTA interviews (damn related videos)
He hates interviews. Alana seems so comfortable in thim
PTA's got some pretty cool socks in this interview
harry, ron and hermione are looking great
Got a chucky out of me
Thank tiu
Who else besides me still sleeps in a waterbed? Been sleeping in one since the 70's albeit now in a motion free.
Dig the Q&A. So many ads though. Please chill on the ads.
alana give us that playlist
Now replace Alana with her mom and Hoffman with Paul Thomas Anderson….that’s pretty story of this movie and it’s inspiration
Does anybody know the melody coming in the beginning of this?
That story with there mom and pta and the painting is some movie shit in it self
Which theater is this?
Has Alana been having to watch the movie every night for like a week now?
I’ve been to a couple of Q&As before and they’ve just brought the people in after it finishes so I’d imagine they wouldn’t watch it most times
@@GiantSandles oh! That would make more sense. I couldn't imagine watching myself act over and over again
Some actors don't watch their films like Andrew Lincoln (Rick From walking dead) he doesn't watch himself. And I also I think Daniel Day Lewis from what I heard.
Lol not the interviewer pronouncing alanas last name wrong at 4:32 😭 friendly reminder it's pronounced HI-um not hame :D alana says it correctly at 6:23
It’s Hime, or more correctly - Ha’eem
What theater is this
Is it Ray romano?
both were brilliant in this fab film !!!!!! very fun. wht tho is a licorice pizza?????
wanna hug cooper , so delightful !

P T and Quentin Tarantino are the "most friendly combatant " as QT says. Anderson is definitely inspired by Tarantino 's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
I always felt like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was Tarantino’s attempt at a PTA style movie
@@timy9197 And You are right. Tarantino is in fact inspired by Boogie Nights also...I remember he says something like I am better because PT exists, and PT's better because I exist ( something like that) and he is right. My Respect,
did PTA's hair turn grey overnight?
17:40 - musc
Lol, I'm really excited for this movie and I love everything that PTA does but I have to admit, when I heard the title was Licorice Pizza I thought "that's a bizarre and clunky title, I'm not crazy about it" so to hear him say he kinda just ran out of ideas and went with that kinda reinforces my opinion that it's not a great title. Oh well, titles don't define movies, I'm looking forward to this. It's also a bit inspiring that masters of the craft don't wait for the perfect idea, and just get the job done anyways even if it's not perfect. It's something I need to do more.
Licorice Pizza also used to be a record store there in that area and he mentioned that. Records look like black licorice pizzas. Hence the name.
Licorice pizza was the name of a chain of record stores in Southern California in the 60s and 70s. I bought my first albums at the Anaheim store in 71.
Phillip Hoffman’s son looks and talks exactly like his dad did😵
Not the interviewer mispronouncing her last name
PTA seems to be moving into a Mamet phase.
How so
@@songdanceman9881 He looks just like david mamet this evening.

Can I have PTA’s email? lol
I was an extra in two of his movies.. and my dad was a location manager on one ;) haha I’m serious
Some Tarantino troll was in the audience. lol
Why you say that?
Anybody else think Cooper Hoffman looks sorta like Paul Dano in the trailer

PTA stammers a lot!
He didn’t used to. Maybe had a bad batch of something.
The romance between the woman wasn’t weird because they loved each other. It was weird because it was looked at as a joyous moment. It felt like we were suppose to root for them, which was kinda weird. The pedophile scene in Happiness wasn’t weird to me because it wasn’t glorified at all. And that you aren’t rooting for that creep in the movie.
the film doesnt glorify it we are seeing it through their eyes
