- Amory Lovins discusses Reinventing Fire with John McDonald of Chevron at the Techonomy Conference 2010.
Please note the following correction: At 17:44, instead of "micropower", it is more accurate to say that "renewables (excluding big hydro)" will pass nuclear power in capacity this year and in output in about four more years.
No where does he say Solar is the answer. You are definitely not paying attention. His main focus is what he says is "integrated design." Which is about multiple use items that help lower costs and increase energy efficiency. So if you get energy usage low enough, then solar can help. You are just reacting to key words and not really paying attention.
Where does he say it is easy? Oh that right nowhere. Funny about you comment is that it is out dated. Tesla is now making good profit. So much for your example. To build the light-weight cars that he is talking about you would need carbon thermal plastics. Currently that isn't mass manufactured. Of course had you listened you would know that.
And? Natural gas peaker plants are used at the same percentage but I don't see you shitting all over that. Speaking of peaker generation, solar does that too, and it provides nearly 60% power during those times. Imagine that. That little 3.2% having a HUGE effect on the grid.
Duffitz, I just checked the numbers and for 2011, Germany got 3.2% of their electrical energy generated with solar. And that electricity was VERY expensive and would never have been produced without government subsidies. Your statements about Germany producting half of its electricity from Solar are bogus and ridiculous. I don't know where you got that info. You are about as nutty as Lovins.
Amory Lovins is a certified crackpot. Solar Energy is a joke. Doesn't work at night. Doesn't work when it's raining or snowing. Solar Cells don't even last very long. Getting rid of oil & coal by 2050 is pure folly, a recipe for disaster. Solar does next to nothing for transportation. Can you power a 747 with solar energy? Think about it. I work in the energy industry & can say that not only is this guy stupid, he's dangerous. Solar will never be more than a small source of practical energy.
