I'm actually having a Bearded Devil be one half of the final boss of my first campaign. I gave him a bunch of levels in Fighter and gave him some magical gear. The Party thinks they'll only be fighting a dictator, imagine their surprise when they encounter this terrifying infernal killer. He has 311HP and 42 AC
Something that kinda bugs me about devils and demons is, both are generally immune to fire and poison...so why do they keep using fire and poison on each other in their battles in the blood war? The only reason I can think of is that it generates from them both naturally, hence both their immunity and its ubiquity.
Bit late, but I see it as they don’t really want the war to end. Since as long as it continues their deal with the gods continues. So that could be why.
The leadership doesn't want it to end. The rank and file certainly do as that war will definitely kill them given enough time. As for why they both have fire and poison resistance...of course they have that. How many eons have they been fighting each other with fire and poison? They develop such resistances as a means to live a little longer in a war with no end and no restrictions. Both sides moved beyond using those things to kill each other but different beings are not so immune so not like having it is useless
hells grunt troops. the different devils are so interesting. you should visit the abyss when you are done in hell.and perhaps some other interesting planes, like where the grell come from.
+MisterTutor2010 Dis Pater was a Roman god of the underworld, later subsumed by Pluto or Hades (Hades was Greek). Originally a subterranean god of riches, fertile agricultural land, and underground mineral wealth, he was later commonly equated with the Roman deities Pluto and Orcus, becoming an underworld deity. Dis Pater was commonly shortened to simply Dis. This name has since become an alternative name for the underworld or a part of the underworld, such as the City of Dis of The Divine Comedy. Clearly, D&D borrows whatever it wants from ancient religious lore to build it's own fantastic realms.
this video was awesome, great job AJ. sometime I'd love to see a video about the blood war, the way you describe the lore of it sounds brutal and bloody awesome.
I just keep rewatching these, the demons and the dragons videos. Ogres and trolls too. Just over and over. Did you ever get stickers of that awesome drawing someone did of you?
Depends on the orc and hob/goblin character class levels and their equipment. Years ago I was in a game at the local RPG shop running 3.5e system. The group was a mix of lawful and neutral evil PCs, we were trying to find a gate home as we traded with night hags soul gems. The was a background battle of a few dozen Bearded Devils verse a few dozen Abyss lesser demons, " it was meant to be Back Ground " flavoring like a tavern fight. But the hobgoblin and all the other lawful evil types just ran down to aid the devils vs demons, cause they wanted the Xp for demon kills that they wouldn't normal get. Along with we had a couple of fighters model themselves on the theme of Bearded Devils. Since the group was lawful evil the devils let them join and form ranks with their fighting unit. Now dealing with their commander about letting them go after wards was a role playing encounter in of it's self. End result, four of the players ended up PCing Bearded Devils on our group " scouting " mission.
It depends on the campaign your DM is running. What ever makes a good game. If you are playing a LE fighter that specialize in glaive pole arm, then yes. The DM can work around and with story plot development for a devil character. Example one: " sorry I only have 3.5e D&D rule books to work with." 12th-level fighter, or 6th-level fighter/ and 6 levels of a prestige class. Your character can start off their/ your Baator campaign as a 8Hd Bearded Devil with 4th-level fighter. 2.) I as a DM would say the Infernal Pact will mean taking levels in the prestige class: Blackguard/ cleric* and making evil minor magic items to pay the devil to bribe those up the chain of command. a.) My game shop allow henchmen and up to a dozen war band NPC that the Player can run at the same time. With the feat "Leadership" and the skill (profession: soldier/ tactic:" ) 3.) If you do not have Chain Mail tactical game for large combat between units of troops, to have a battle between Devils vs Demons. Buy two chess sets. i.) Set one chess set up as normal for playing chess between two players. ii.) The second chess set, form the pawns into two ranks of four for eight bearded devils glaive wall. two knights: imp archers two bishops: spell users two rocks: Ogres with goblin riders/ archers. or " Goristro demon" queen: king: iii.) there are 16 pieces per side in the game of chess. meaning there are three ranks of five, or four ranks of four. iv.) Your game group can play out the encounter the long way as stander monster encounter, or roll 1d20 to hit, dmg from 100hp as a whole unit. and multiple units can attack the same unit. 4.) Playing a devil is about the Blood War, also a promotion out of the war band fighting demons means no xp award growth, castle guard duty sucks, it keeps your character from advancing or being K.I.A., demoted . Promotion from fighting the Blood War mean bargaining and making Soul Contracts so your character can grow into a Pit Fiend. Hope these ideals help you out some, and have a good weekend.
I like the bearded devils, they're amongst my favorite of devilkind.. they remind me of when your a young man in his career.. you lie to everybody to be nice to them aka the beard, you can tear them apart with your bear hands, and you keep everybody away with that pole arm too
I was thinking of what a animated serie who take place in hell but fonctioning like a entreprise and have the seven princes of hell has a CEO conseil would done.

the influence of Dantes divine comedy and Miltons paradise lost is rather apparent in Baator
Very much so.
Well nine circles of hell. A classic.

+trenton maloney I see you have been reading my To Do list!
I remember the name Dis from when I read the Inferno when I was junior in high school.

The Seven Heavens was likely a reference to the Paradiso. The Paradiso and the Purgatorio are not quite as famous as the Inferno.

yeah, it is about as close to a never ending conflict as you can find in the D&D universe.
Are you gonna talk about all the archdevils of the nine Hells?
I just keep rewatching these, the demons and the dragons videos. Ogres and trolls too. Just over and over. Did you ever get stickers of that awesome drawing someone did of you?
Not without their express permission.
Imagine if there was an all out fight between Orcs, Goblins, and Bearded Devils. I wonder who’d be the last one standing

It would be awesome to run or play a game entirely in Baator.
Do a vid on barbed Devils please A.J.
can a pact define that the seller of the soul will skip the 1st stages & appear in the 9 Hells as a Bearded Devil from the start?
