Oh those pernicious packing peanuts again! Great video. I like watching even those I don't have a beta machine. I do however have a VHS player that will eat a tape as soon as it's inserted. I don't want to mess with it since the DVD recorder still works.

Interesting, if you put it on 0.25x speed you can actually see that one field the image looks perfect and the other field looks all messed up.

That's right, one head is badly worn and is not outputting the full frequency response on the tape as the gap is worn wider.
Lets go back to audio school for a minute. Enter the 3 head tape deck.
A 3 head tape deck has a record head with a nice wide gap, so a strong magnetic signal is generated from the record amplifier that penetrates deep into the tape magnetic layer. Most reel to reel recorders will have a 7 micron gap for the record head, and 1 micron gap for playback.
The 7 micron will play back for sure, but all the high frequencies are lost.
A 2 head machine has usually a 3 or 4 micron gap. It will both record and play reasonably well but not as good as it can.
Now as the head wears that 1 micron head will start to wear and get wider over time, and the high frequencies will start to fall off.
Video heads are no different, as they wear the high frequencies fall off. Video however is not recorded like audio. Video is FM recorded. The brighter the intensity of the signal, the wider the deviation of the FM carrier. Once the heads wear they can no longer recover the extreme frequencies for very bright details in the image.
As the head begins to wear you first notice it on recent recordings. They won't play good, but old recordings will or recordings made on another machine. Other machines will also play recordings made with worn heads just fine for awhile. As the wear continues then old recordings and recordings made on other machines also declines rapidly.

I don't know What it is @12voltvids but I'm always hooked on these VHS and Beta repairs, maybe it's because I have affinity for old analog and nostalgia device's. This repair reminds me of my first VCR I bought in 1987 which was a Sylvania, what a workhorse I recorded a ton of tapes on this machine, until the video heads died out in 2005, it looked just like the one here you were working on same picture, however in its prime it really had a great picture and sound, and I'm still archiving some of my tapes with my great Funai units which are still going strong, only problem is the mode switch once in a while, after that works great. Great video, Ohh by the way I'm going to send you a big box of "Packing Peanuts" just kidding 12volts, lol I couldn't resist !! lol lol

Its funny that many knock the funai machines when it fact they were some of the most reliable machines in the market. They also manufactured VHS machines longer than any other manufacture and were the last ones standing right to the very end. I wonder where that very last machine off the line ended up as they turned off the lights in the factory for the last time. The end of an era.

@@12voltvids "Good point" 12volts, I totally agree, I bought 2 Funai brand combo units that were DVD recorders in 2008 and were very cheap, because the store was trying to get rid of them, but what attracted me to them was the recording time, 1hr, 2hrs, 2.5hrs which was kind of cool, because I was able to put two 80 minute movies on one disc, because actual time would give 2hrs and 44 minutes perfect, then I bought 2 more Funai units in 2014 although the recording times on these later models were basic XP SP etc. But overall I like these Funai, great picture quality and sound !!

I f'ing hate them. They get tracked into the house and the cats try to eat them. One of them gets stuck in a cat and I will be looking at another huge vet bill. 6500 last year for my cat and the cat is not getting any better and may only have a few months left. Vet said could last a year or so. Been 6 months.

Greetings brother, I am from Venezuela, I have this problem with two Sony betamax models: SL-HF750, SL-HF860, when I run them on the sensors manually so that it plays, they do so but the roller that rotates when the tape is running does not work and obviously it does not work. The image appears and the tape tangles since that roller has to be working but I can't find the fault and that roller moves through the capstan but that silver stick does not rotate at all. Could you help me? The truth is, I would like to recover those two powerful pieces of equipment and you will. you know very well.

VHS also used 4 heads. 2 for SP and 2 for LP/EP. The longer play heads are much narrower, 22uM for the EP (used for LP as well) and 68uM for SP.
The Beta1 heads and also more than twice as wide as the B2/3 heads. This explains why the B1 playback is almost perfect. The heads are wider and as such take longer to wear out. VHS was the same.

It's amazing and I'm glad people want to fix machines, but unlike film which can be restored, the rotting tapes from this era will make it useless to have these machines. Better xfer anything you need off them soon.

I have been telling people that for 20 years. Some people just never listen. Film also rots. Dyes fade. Kodachrome looked great, but the cheaper house brands that many people used, the dyes have all faded and changed. Sure you can color correct to a degree but they all look pretty bad when the film has cone monochromatic
Colorize, sure whats 1000 per minute of film. .
