The backlash on this film is wildddd! I feel like Halloween was so much more well received, but I get it - The Exorcist is one of, if not the most iconic horror film in history. People are touchy about anything new connected to this film and I get that. Please keep in mind I am also a rotten tomatoes critic so even if you are seeing a lot of hate there are people who have separated it from the original. It’s important to have an open mind with this film. If it’s not your vibe that’s totally cool, there’s so much horror out right now so I think skip it. But if you’re intrigued in what they can do with modernising this nightmare check it out and make up your own mind.
Also of course it’s valid if you saw the film and didn’t enjoy it, we love constructive conversation. But make up your own mind 🙌🏼

I loved it. I do not find what UA-cam critics have said, that it is unlike the first movie. I think it greatly homages Friedkin's style. The pacing of the film when the two girls were lost was a little rushed. Ellen Burstyn was underused. I would like to have spent more time with her character. This is a solid possession movie. It's one of the best produced in this franchise since the first movie. I think a clique of UA-cam critics trashed it because they are seeking validation and respect as "serious" critics, but by pandering and saying what is expected of them to say, many have shown a lack of integrity. In turn, I have stopped subscribing to a few of them after realizing they would rather gain likes and clicks than have a unique view of a movie. Who needs to hear anyone repeat the exact same critiques over and over, sometimes so similar they might have been scripted or coached in what to say? That's not honesty to me. I only want honest reviews about movies I intend to see.

FUN FACTS: Linda Blair, who portrayed Regan MacNeil in the first film, was an "advisor" on set. David Gordon Green stated in an article to Total Film that he was really lucky to have Blair read the script, but she was not interested in a significant role or stepping back into that. He also brought her in as an mentor to the girls because they were dealing with young people and want to take them to dangerous places safely.
The first movie in the David Gordon Green Halloween trilogy was pretty amazing but the second and third ones was okay.

Fun fact? Everybody knew that. It was publicized well enough. What was unknown is that Linda Blair was there for a cameo. She might have advised the young girls, but she was only on set for about three days. It's likely filming with the young stars took a few months to complete.

This surprised me quite a bit, because I tend to agree with your reviews. While I didn't HATE it like a lot of people, I definitely didn't love it, either. I think the main difference is you enjoyed the second half WAY more than I did. I was really enjoying it for about the first half, and was thinking to myself, "why is everyone hating on this so much? It's good!" And shortly after I thought that, they had the first scene with Ellen Burstyn, and from that point on, the movie was just goofy. Goofy can be a good thing in horror, but it didn't work for me here, especially because the set up was so strong. I guess the bottom line is: were the first half of this movie and the second half REALLY written by the same people? It didn't seem like it.

  • @georgeheilman885
    @georgeheilman885 10 місяців тому +2

Saw it tonight and I believe...I don't need to see it again. It has its moments and most of the acting works, but it largely tries to be too stylish and quickly paced, and ends up tripping over its feet in the process. Other scenes don't seem to try hard enough, namely with suspense or characters we barely get to know and that's all we get.
The scene of the climactic exorcism was all over the place, and I genuinely got two laughs in short succession by what was presented as a big reveal; pretty sure only one was intended. Call-backs to the original film don't work as well here as they did in Green's Halloween films, despite his apparent efforts.
Best I can give it is a 5/10. Appropriately, there was a showing of the 50th anniversary remastered edition of the original film right before Believer's session, and I relished every second of that. So it wasn't all bad a night out.

I always enjoy your reviews Emma. You're a true horror fan, just like me. I agree with you in some aspects, especially regarding the visuals, sets, cinematography, but I think that what prevents the movie to become a great horror exorcism film is the storyline. The actors are good, but the film is so unoriginal, full of the same tropes that the 1973 classic established so well, and it doesn't innovate or takes chances, it's too 'safe' and not scary IMO. It needed to be more visceral. It's better than the 26% of RT, but I would give it a 57% only for the effort. David Gordon Green shouldn't destroy any other horror franchise. He already did that with Halloween...

That's good news. I'm here for a new Exorcist flick. The original has stayed with me for 40 years and I'm eager to dip my toes back into that hellscape. I also hear the original Exorcist III is worth a watch. I skipped everything after II. Thanks for the update.

Definitely check out Exorcist III. It was written and directed by William Peter Blatty, who wrote the original Exorcist novel and screenplay (which he won an Oscar for). It’s a pretty brilliant film. The original creators had nothing to do with the abomination that was Exorcist II.

I'm happy you enjoyed it Emma! There's a lot of people who are going to shit on this movie. I just returned from the movie theatre and really enjoyed it. I wasn't expecting it to come anywhere close to the original but seeing all the references they make to it put a smile on my face. And based on the way they ended it, I'm really curious to see where they take this story. I have a bunch of questions too! The movie theatre had placed a big bed in the darkness at the entrance with a woman in it groaning and screaming. That was really well done.

I disagree, but that's allright. It was pretty entertaining and the first hour I thought it had a lot of potential but. SPOILERS
    - Ellen Burstyn somehow became magical and annoying by knowing and feeling things she could not know and feel. Furthermore, how is writing a book making you not see your daughter for 40 years. That's a little extreme.
-It had evangelical Disney like speeches, one of Ellen Burstyn. ‘In the end it is people’. And the one at the end, that were totally unnecessary. ‘Evil wants us to give up but we heal etc.’ Reminded me of the equally bad speeches in the new Halloween franchise. The power of the original Exorcist was that it didn't explain itself, but made you feel what it meant.
-The flashbacks at the end to the beginning of the movie were totally unnecessary, we saw the movie.
-The quotes that were lifted out of the original were too much based on nostalgia. Same with the priest who’s head got turned around (wink wink) and the green vomit.
-It started pretty original but in the end it seemed more and more like a bad copy of the original. The thing that did make it suspenseful was that the parents of Katherine chose, and that she died. That I liked (in a spooky way ;))
    - The girl who played Katherine wasn’t as good as an actress as the other girl imo. She was over the top, and therefore not scary to me (also she seemed like a Reagan cosplayer) imo. Also the demon voice wasn’t as creepy as the original imo. Angela was played way more effective. She was the highlight of the movie imo.
    - there was almost no slow progression in the demon taking over imo. One moment they were only affected in their mind and behavior. And in the next moment they became demonic.
    - I don’t see how they are going to make 2 more. I think it will go down from here, just like Halloween by the same director.
All in all not a really a good movie. Sometimes actively bad imo. But it had it’s moments and I did enjoy myself. But it doesn’t hold a candle (pun intended) to the original.

@@filmfangirls9163 the "patriarchy" line? Well, I've looked back in history to 1969 when the book was written, and even to 1972. There would definitely be some truth to that notion, especially amongst Jesuits and Alexians, who performed the rituals on the boy The Exorcist is based upon. If that is the line, I think it's fair Chris can be grateful, and be questioning some meaning of the priests' intent. Considering the difference in perspective with fifty years of hindsight, I think it's a fair observance Chris expressed. As far as we've come in even the last couple of decades, we still aren't completely shed of old ways, old habits, even if we disagree with some of the motions behind those traditions.

@cjmiller6741 I know you wrote a lot, and I swear I did read it, but I'm sorry, that's not why they didn't let her back into the room. In the original film (which is what they are banking off of), these fictional men went against the church, broke the rules and cost their lives to save her daughter. And they did. They kept her out for her safety and trauma. Chris begged them to the house after they had already told her they weren't positive it was a demon and they couldn't get permission to perform it. But Father K finally relented when he saw how distressed she was. She couldn't even open the door for him on his first visit cuz she was so heartbroken and scared seeing what this demon was doing to her daughter. They went in without her cuz they didn't want her see what the demon had continued to do to her. And they DIED saving her and her daughter from this demon. She can't write a tell all book when she wasn't in the room and if Reagan forgot everything and she was happy about that.
