scrimmages are really important in tryouts I did the drills with hustle and skill but i didn't really live up to it in a scrimmage. The scrimmage is also the closest situation to a real game in tryouts
I’d add also suggest trying to be the best defender & rebounder because those seem to be underrated skills by a lot of kids, but not coaches, especially if you’re not a great shooter.
For sure, that usually just takes effort and coaches are always looking for high effort kids. And effort is always in your control while scoring and shooting aren’t.

Thank you! It is good, still early in the season so continuing to get settled with a new team and new city but overall feel very positive about the situation.
I'm Italian and for me it's an interesting video because here (and I think in most of Europe) we instaed don't have tryouts in high school. Basically everybody can find a team, the selection happens only for high level teams (like the youth sector of a professional team). So what happens when somebody gets cut from a tryout? Can he still somehow keep playing in that year?
Yeah in Europe it is more run by clubs instead of high school sports if I am not mistaken. If you get cut, there aren't many other options. You could play for a rec team, which is basically a low stakes league that is just for fun. Or you could spend that time trying to get better and go out for the team again the next year.
@@TuckerRichardson thanks for the answer. I think US system puts high school players in a competitive and tougher situation sooner. There are pros and cons in my opinion
Probably true, although I think the way European clubs develop skills and basketball IQ is much better than in the US where there is more of a focus on completion and games. So you are right, pros and cons.
I'm trying out for jv this year bc im a freshman but the problem is I only started playing basketball this summer. The only reason I'm trying out for Jv and not freshman is bc I've been going to open gym over the summer and my coach says he thinks ill do good as a big man for the jv team (i'm 6'2). The only problem I have right now is that I lack the iq and confidence to know what im doing on offence, im decent at defence. If you have any tips for tryouts, which are in 2 weeks, I would appreciate it.
Hey, if you just started playing then don't put to much pressure on yourself. You have so much room to grow, just try and go out there, play hard, and learn as much as you can!
we just got done with our tryouts i barley got to do anything because players didn't give me a chance to shoot so now i'm stressing if i'm going to make the team or not because of that.
im a pretty bad player in the 8th grade, but i enjoy rebounding A LOT and thats pretty much the only thing im good at, do you think i need to start training to score more to make it in next year?
I'm a freshman in the biggest high school in MT (510 kids in the freshman class) and Im coming from a very small private middle school where none of the coaches or players know me. If i were to guess, id say I have a 35-45% chance of making the team, because i think there will be 2 freshman teams.
My tryouts are right after conditioning, I've been to every conditioning, but I haven't done so well in them except the running being loud and motivating players and hustling. Every day I go to conditioning I mess up and try to do better the next time. I practice every day and hit the gym 2-3 times a week. Any tips? (12 people make the team and 30-35 people are trying out)
Sounds like you are doing the right things. However you still have to stand out basketball wise to make the team, not just by doing the little things (which are incredibly important too).
i just got cut from my freshman basketball team today and the reason why was because I wasn't quite as strong as everybody else was and was only 5 11 120 pounds, im legit in a depression right now and almost started crying when I got home.
Yeah I think it is great to ask questions, and most likely other players are thinking the same thing so coaches like that. Just make sure you try and listen the first time to whatever they explain, but again if you don't understand a question is fine.
1st year playing high school basketball as a junior and my coach wants me to tryout for varsity so I’m really going to have to prepare any tips on in game shooting??
Yeah, don't worry about the makes or misses. Especially at tryouts, you don't have enough time to worry about if your last shot went in or not, you just have to move on to the next play. So no matter how you are shooting, continue to stay aggressive because if you don't, you are wasting your time at tryouts.
If anything, you have so much room for improvement. You are so young, imagine if you started taking your training seriously at this early age. Just have fun with you workouts and try and get better at every aspect of the game. Don't compare yourself to anyone else, just start to build the habit of putting in the work.
@@Mike-oj4mc I don’t have anyone too specific for you, but the more hoops you can watch, whether it is college, NBA, European, whatever will help you improve!
Well it depends on your role and the level of your team. In most cases, if you want to play in college you are going to have to be a high level scorer in high school, so in that case you would be an on the ball guy.
thanks for this video i was watching a lot of your videos but today i tryouts i got cut i’m in 8th what’s your advice for me i was thinking about quitting but idk
You are so young! If you really love the game, you have so much time to continue to get better. This is why I said getting cut can be good for you, it can be a wake up call to work harder!
Hmmm. That is tough. You get to decide which tryouts you go to? It is hard for me to advise you because I don’t know the type of player you are or the level of your team. At my high school, if you didn’t really well on JV you could get moved up to varsity, so it might be a safe bet to make the JV team then try to do that?
I have always been better than people think I am, I just can't play to my fullest ability. I'm not aggressive enough and I get nervous. Do you have any tips?
I’ve made a bunch of videos about confidence issues, so check those out. But I would say keeping it in perspective, realize no one is really worried about you except yourself. When you miss a shot or make a mistake and make a big deal out of it, you are just doing yourself a disservice because no one else really cares. So move on from mistakes and keep an aggressive mentality no matter the result of a play!
I think he is a UA-camr called driftyjay if we are talking about the same guy. I got some clips from a video he made where he infiltrated high school basketball tryouts 😂
i needed this video. i got tryouts tmrw and the odds are stacked against me for making varsity even though i can hang with anyone on their roster. thank you 🙏
My brother has interest from Lehigh and American University and is playing this upcoming year at a post grad called AIA prep. I wanted to know if you have advice. If you want to watch his highlights his youtube channel is called Isaac Dye. Thank you and I love your videos.
Very cool he is getting D1 interest! Sounds like he doesn’t need my advice, he is doing something right. I would say for him to be very respectful when talking to the coaches, but also ask a ton of questions about the school to show your interest. Coaches aren’t just looking at who you are as a player, they also want to know if you are a good person!
If you’re not a first or second scoring option kind of player, you’d better be a try hard or taller than 6’6”. Old heads are coaching, not your snowflake friends.
I think I see what you are saying. Basically if you aren’t gonna score, you gotta be really good at doing all the little things, like a dirty work kind of player. I pretty much agree, you have to bring some value to the table.
im not a basketball player, but i have huge respect for those who do play basketball. The competitiveness for basketball and soccer tryouts are insane.

tryouts in two weeks. im 6 feet tall with a nasty hook shot and kyrie like handles. wish me luck bro
Sounds like you don't even need it!
I’m about to go to play basketball for the first time in months do to an injury and my tryouts are coming up wish me luck
Good luck!
Trying out for JV at grade 9, I feel kinda cooked since sm players be dunking and allat
You got this!
we just got done with our tryouts i barley got to do anything because players didn't give me a chance to shoot so now i'm stressing if i'm going to make the team or not because of that.
I wish I had seen this video before this years tryouts 😭
I didn't make my 7th grade basketball team and Im using it as motivation
That is what I like to hear!
I made the team lil bro no wake up call needed😎😎😎
im a pretty bad player in the 8th grade, but i enjoy rebounding A LOT and thats pretty much the only thing im good at, do you think i need to start training to score more to make it in next year?
Yes for sure, continue to work on all your skills. However rebounding is an extremely important skill!
@@TuckerRichardson thanks, will do
I'm a freshman in the biggest high school in MT (510 kids in the freshman class) and Im coming from a very small private middle school where none of the coaches or players know me. If i were to guess, id say I have a 35-45% chance of making the team, because i think there will be 2 freshman teams.
Really gonna need to find away to stand out, but I think it is definitely possible. Good luck!
@@TuckerRichardson Thank u ill take this and use it!
I suck but ima still try out my last year I’ll lyk what happens
Keep us updated!
@ I didn’t make it man he put me in with 1 min of the scrimmage and everyone else got 5 min I just don’t understand
i just got cut from my freshman basketball team today and the reason why was because I wasn't quite as strong as everybody else was and was only 5 11 120 pounds, im legit in a depression right now and almost started crying when I got home.
That’s okay, you have a lot of room to grow and improve!
Should I ask questions if I don't understand a play or not
Yeah I think it is great to ask questions, and most likely other players are thinking the same thing so coaches like that.
So no matter how you are shooting, continue to stay aggressive because if you don't, you are wasting your time at tryouts.
keep up the vids
Will do...
i didnt make it
this is so sad
How do i have to get better im 12 rn and im 178cm how do improve?
If anything, you have so much room for improvement. You are so young, imagine if you started taking your training seriously at this early age. Just have fun with you workouts and try and get better at every aspect of the game. Don't compare yourself to anyone else, just start to build the habit of putting in the work.
@@TuckerRichardson Thanks for the advice but what basketball player film should i watch😊
@@Mike-oj4mc I don’t have anyone too specific for you, but the more hoops you can watch, whether it is college, NBA, European, whatever will help you improve!
Ok thanks for the info 👍 keep posting your great content i always watch it👍
You dont need height to win a basketball game it's all in your brain and memory
Last day of tryouts tomorrow
yo should i try be more of onball scorer instead of a offball scorer in my league im 15
Well it depends on your role and the level of your team. In most cases, if you want to play in college you are going to have to be a high level scorer in high school, so in that case you would be an on the ball guy.
This helped so much, thanks
I have tryouts tonight and tomorrow
I’ll update this comment if I make it
Let us know!!
How was it?
Bro I have tryouts on the 21st aka tmmrw
Let us know how it goes!
@@TuckerRichardson I made the team bro thanks for the advice
@@elishascaife6306 Let's go!
thanks for this video i was watching a lot of your videos but today i tryouts i got cut i’m in 8th what’s your advice for me i was thinking about quitting but idk
You are so young! If you really love the game, you have so much time to continue to get better. This is why I said getting cut can be good for you, it can be a wake up call to work harder!
@@TuckerRichardson i love the game of basketball but idk where to go from here i was thinking about trying out aau
do you think if i try out for varsity as a sophtmore the coach will aprceiate my confiedents and even if i do bad will put me on jv
Hmmm. That is tough. You get to decide which tryouts you go to? It is hard for me to advise you because I don’t know the type of player you are or the level of your team. At my high school, if you didn’t really well on JV you could get moved up to varsity, so it might be a safe bet to make the JV team then try to do that?
@@TuckerRichardson alright
All this is so true
I agree haha
thanks
I got you!
I didn’t make my team only 12 kids made it but ima get better for next year
Use it as motivation!
My school don’t even got tryouts 😭
Why??
Why did this have to show up after I got cut 2 hours ago
Oof, sorry to hear that. Hopefully you get another opportunity next year.
Who was the guy with the good handles in the black t shirt
I think he is a UA-camr called driftyjay if we are talking about the same guy. I got some clips from a video he made where he infiltrated high school basketball tryouts 😂
@@TuckerRichardson ohh alr thank you
@@TuckerRichardson i found it hes so tuff
100 people trying out, only 10 making it. I have tryouts later today.
Good luck!
i think i have a alr chance to make it but ik the coach doesn’t like me
You got this!
i needed this video. i got tryouts tmrw and the odds are stacked against me for making varsity even though i can hang with anyone on their roster. thank you 🙏
Good luck, go do your thing and prove you belong!
I have tryouts tomorrow. Pls pray for me. Hope I do good!
Good luck out there, go do your thing!
@@TuckerRichardson thanks bro!
I made the team!!! (Ty for the tips)
@@XxfuttyeditsXx Congrats!!

tall good at layups been playing for a lot decent at dribbling and coach knows me well
Those are good odds!
If you’re calling someone a “tryhard” then maybe they’re just better than you and you should try harder.
100% agreed!

🤷🏼♂
My brother has interest from Lehigh and American University and is playing this upcoming year at a post grad called AIA prep. I wanted to know if you have advice. If you want to watch his highlights his youtube channel is called Isaac Dye. Thank you and I love your videos.
Very cool he is getting D1 interest! Sounds like he doesn’t need my advice, he is doing something right. I would say for him to be very respectful when talking to the coaches, but also ask a ton of questions about the school to show your interest. Coaches aren’t just looking at who you are as a player, they also want to know if you are a good person!
@@TuckerRichardson Thank you
5%
Oof
my 8th grade basketball team sucks 100% im making it in
Good to hear!
I made it to my freshman team
Congrats!
i have 100 % chance as i am the main scorer
Very good, hopefully you can bring the level and competitiveness of the tryout up and set the tone as a leader out there!
Tbh basketball tryouts is a scam they alr have the team picked out
Hmmmm...maybe sometimes?

Jayson tatum
MVP?
I got cut 🫠
you don't really need to be good at basketball in my school you just need good grades its so stupid
