Sepultura and Obituary proved long ago that its not the tuning, its the riffs. Arise, Beneath the Remains and Slowly we Rot are heavy shit more than most 17 string one note riffs music nowdays.
I remember the day I got Conclusion of an Age, literally changed my life. One of my favourite records of all time. Favourite track has to be transcendence. Hoping Josh resurrects them after the Architects hype has died down from their new record/tour.
Man the one time they had a show together over here in DC Sylosis had that bus crash and we got a shitty cover band instead. At least I got Trivium and devildriver...
Winds of plague is a very underrated metal band that plays in E standard tuning still, check out chest and horns, the great stone war, and decimate the weak, really great guitar work in those songs

Sylosis has been my favourite band since 2010. Josh is crazy talented. He slays on guitar and can draw quite well. Bought a few of his limited prints. Can’t wait for the new record he hinted at on his YT channel late last year.
I hadn't heard Sylosis till recently (knew who they were for a while though). It wasn't till the Josh Middleton Sig ltd was announced that I checked him out as his guitar is almost spec'd perfectly (pickups can be swapped out easily enough).
Been huge on them since the very first EP and my God I’m so happy Josh got the Architects gig and the boys are all doing well. Used to kind of break my heart seeing somebody so musically skilled and who truly loves it sell guitars as he was struggling at points. Awesome band, great playing, new music this year please Josh and co. 🤘🏻

I’m impatiently awaiting another Sylosis record. They said late 2018, but haven’t heard anything with Josh being in Architects, which he was a great edition imo, he was filling big shoes. Good choice of riffs btw, some of these are the songs of theirs that stick out to me the most, you played them fucking well.
So happy the Conclusion of an Age album is getting so much love. Was so excited when that debut came out following the 2 EP's. Speaking of their old stuff: The Supreme Oppressor EP is on Spotify, great few tunes on there. Casting Shadows was on there but has seem to have disappeared unfortunately. Hunt it down on YT though!
That's a freaking good introduction. I've been breaking my head trying to figure out how to make my friends sit and listen for some of Sylosis at least but 99% of times it turns out to be a failure. Though you guys who watch this need to understand that all the heaviness comes in the context of each song. And Josh Middleton knows how to put that just right. His feeling of song structure and harmonies - those are what makes sylosis so perfect and superheavy. And his building of guitar tone. That feeling when you listen when you know what comes in 2 seconds and lift your head waiting for a killer headbang.

Been dusting off all them Sylosis files and tabs myself lately, You are on the money with them riffs! How about the opening riffs on both Sevitude and Kingdom of Solitude - maybe you are still practicing Kingdom of Solitude because 32nd notes at 120 bpm is pretty f-ing fast tremello picking to be able to play without f-ing up - I might add, the downpicking riff that follows is mighty fearsome as well, must say the interlude is cool too! I know Jamie knows his metal - if you think that Sylosis is one of the most Epic metal bands of our time, you are not alone! Whosoever may make Servitude the first riff they learn, Will manifest Great things on the Guitar in the future!
A Serpents Tongue, Beyond The Resurrected, What Dwells Within, Born Anew, A Dying Vine, Swallow The World, Withered, Stained Humanity, To Build A Tomb, Victims And Pawns, Servitude and pretty much any other song has at least one heavy af riff. Fucking love Sylosis, hope they'll release new album soon.

Dude you included Oath of Silence! I've been listening to nothing but Sylosis again since they announced the new record and I forgot how heavy their EPs were
Whenever they tuned down it was drop D, otherwise they were exclusively standard tuning in earlier years and later was 1/2 step down or dropped C# like in Children of The Grave, Sabbath sounded heavy because they knew how to play heavy without the crutch of a saggy bottom or 7-strings.
Look at Pantera...most of their whole catalog is pretty close to standard, especially the first couple. Petrucci makes some wicked stuff in standard as well. I LOVE 7 strings though, because it gives you options. Especially writing in a cool key like C on a 7. I HATE just B stuff, just like I hate just E. Get creative.

I tune down to d standard...I think it’s perfect...it’s audible and sits nice in mix’s....I love stuff like death, sepultura..... great vid man....let’s get people writing music again....grooves,hooks,and Metal! I find Sylosis a lot similar to Trivium. So many Ascendancy/Crusade vibes on those riffs. Btw top tier riffs!!
