Nice video!
Let me just point out that your reducer would be inefficient in a React environment It is always returning a new object, even if it receives an action that it doesn't care about. Since it performs a shallow comparison to detect state changes, and since you're always returning a new reference, it would always think "ok, the state has changed".

Thanks for the insightful tutorials. Would it work to write: "newState = state" instead of "newState = {...state}", or do you do the later because it's a copy instead of assigning a reference? Is in necessary to make a copy?

Think of this way Brett, in order to keep the history of the state, react never wants to to modify the state directly. it wants you to create a copy and assign. so you have access to the previous state in case you need to .

@@Techsithtube I think I understand why you have to call setState() and why you can't modify the state that react is keeping track of directly, but I'm wondering if there is anything wrong with changing the state variable and then sending that to setState()? Just changing the variable doesn't actually change the page, so why not change it and then send it as the new state? I guess I'm not too familiar with how React saves the state history, but if it only takes snapshots when setState() is called, then I don't think that modifying the state variable before passing it would cause any harm.

No you have to only subscribe only once when you setup . When you use react with redux you map State and Actions to each Container component that actually is subscription.
