Absolutely stunning, Graham - the composition, the musical performance, and the wonderful choice of images to accompany your video. And your smart outfit, too! I am delighted and honoured to be the dedicatee of this piece - thank you again so, so much. A great choice of organ, too! I found your description of the history of the hymn to be fascinating as well - all I knew was that it was composed by John Ireland and that I loved it. I can't wait to get it on the music desk and learn it properly (I have already had a couple of sight-reads through and it is a delight to play). Thank you once again - another winner, and I love it.
I was thrilled when you agreed to be the dedicatee, David. To know that this hymn has touched your heart in such a special way - as it has touched my heart - and that you like this composition, makes my effort to create this setting so very rewarding.
Thank you for watching and also for leaving a comment - I appreciate it! (The classical guitar is a long way from the organ! I shall be exploring your channel as I love the guitar. A Brazilian friend transcribed one of my organ compositions for guitar. I have send you the score via Facebook Messenger, in case you are interested to look!)
Dear Graham, even the marriage of well-chosen words and a perfect melody are in vain without the musician to bring them to life. In this case however all the three come together and blend perfectly. Bravo Graham, wonderful played.
Thank you for recording your own rendition of the 'Love Unknown' chorale prelude. It was fascinating to learn about the history and composition of this hymn, as well as its unique perspective on the Passion of Christ. Your performance, as a composer, truly captured the essence of the piece. I love the beautiful "Twist" harmonies and modulations. It's amazing to think that this hymn almost fell into obscurity!
Thank you so much for watching and leaving such a kind comment, James - I really appreciate it as I know how busy you are. Falling into obscurity is an occupational certainty for 'composers' of my calibre . . . and then the 'Rien' of the future will rediscover 'Love Unknown' in a few hundred year's time and bring it back from the forgotten realms to a new UA-cam audience . . . well, in my dreams!
Hi Graham, what a wonderful delightful composition! You have captured the mood and the story so sensitively, so much so that my instant reaction was to play it over and over again to fully immerse in what you are communicating through the harmony and registration changes. Thank you so much Graham, you are an incredible contributor to our world! (Forgive me for the late reply, I've been very busy and finally got back to this one.) I hope you are in good health, take care John
Thank you so much. John, for watching and leaving such a lovely comment - it's very kind of you! (And apologies for not having kept in touch since you moved. Hopefully you are all settled now and flourishing. I saw you were very busy with uploads during Advent and Christmas - good to know you still have a passion for the King of Instruments!)
Congratulations Graham. Wonderful to hear this. I too have always loved the hymn, introducing it firstly with the choir in my first church appointment circa 1964 or 5. It has certainly become widely known and loved, even getting included in the 2015 second Catholic Worship Book here in Australia. Two other compositions by Ireland that I love are the anthem 'Greater Love' and the wonderful song 'Sea Fever'.
Thank you so much for your very generous comment, Colin. Like you, I love this hymn and also like you, 'Sea Fever' is a great favourite as Ireland's music so perfectly fits the sentiment of the Masefield words. How I wish I could 'craft' music like John Ireland . . .
This is absolutely tremendous, Graham. There is such warmth in your harmonies and the way you interweave the tune is masterful. What a treat to hear you play this composition and along with the stills montage, it makes for a splendid performance! Bravo!
Thanks, Paul! Ireland's beautiful hymn tune and Crossman's profound words are so well matched . . . I hope my composition shows the love I have for text and melody.
Lovely variations Graham the tune that I know you bring to the fore nearer the end of your playing. The wonderful thing about, your, Paul's ad James' interpretations is that they are deeply meditative and appropriate for Lent. God bless you and your talent over Easter.
Absolutely beautiful Graham! Thank you for the exquisite performance of your new composition - a truly wonderful addition to the repertoire of organists as we enter this season of reflection. The harmony fits the poignant story of the hymn so well - draws us in. Your choice of organ, and beautiful colours just complete the magic. Thank you!!!
That is so very kind and generous of you, Jerry! If anything I have attempted to compose can 'draw in' the performer or listener, then I am more rewarded than I deserve to be. Thank you for all the encouragement and support you offer to me - it means the world!
Beautiful hymn and great arrangement! Thank you for your performance and video that leads you to deep meditation for the season of Lent! Dear Graham 🙏🙏🙏🌹🌹🌹
Thank you so much, Clara. This hymn is just the most wonderful expression of the profound meaning of Christ's Passion and both the words and the music have affected me deeply all my life.
Absolutely lovely Graham! Thank you for sharing this, I enjoyed every moment-and besides the playing and arrangement I also enjoyed your detailed background notes. I’m a bit of an Ireland fan myself, so it was fun to learn some new things!
Gosh, Cole! I am so honoured that you have listened to my latest creation and left such a lovely comment: thank you! John Ireland led a very troubled personal life, but his music has such a sincerity and vitality that it deserves to be more widely known and appreciated. He was heavily influenced by the music of Debussy and Ravel - two masters we also love!
Merci beaucoup d'avoir regardé et d'avoir laissé un gentil commentaire. C'est un hymne très "anglais" avec un texte merveilleux qui ne se traduit pas bien pour chanter dans d'autres langues ! Mais la mélodie est belle !
Dressed in your Sunday best, no less, yours is a warm and alluring setting of this tune. Thank you for your gracious and ongoing contributions to the musical kingdom, Graham.
You are too kind, Christopher! I thought I had better try and look smart to make up for the deficiencies in the music . . . and because I had to give up something for Lent (being scruffy!). But on a serious note, I am glad to have tried to craft my 'thank you' to a hymn that has been deeply significant to me all my life, both spiritually for the profound message in Crossman's words, and emotionally for the beauty of Ireland's score. ❤
Graham, your compositions are incredible! I am getting ready to head off to church and this video popped up on my Utube suggestions, one of my favourite hymns and you added so much beautiful colour with your chord progressions that I have come to know as the "Twist" touch! I would love to have a copy to add to my Lenten repertoire please!!!! I absolutely look forward to hearing your compositions, gems to myself, thank you for posting!
You are always so kind and encouraging about my compositions, Michael! Thank you so much - it is very rewarding for me to know that what I attempt to compose gives you so much pleasure. I have emailed you a copy of the score, so I hope you enjoy playing the piece!
So very beautiful, Graham! The smoothly moving parts glide like a peaceful fountain. Loved reading the story of the hymn and the new melody written for it and always appreciate your insights and explanations of the history behind the music.
Thank you so much for watching and leaving your very generous comment, James. I listen to your music and envy your mastery of harmonic colouring and melodic beauty as every composition touches the heart and is always emotionally affecting. And I envy how Ireland could write this hymn while eating his lunch!
Dear Graham, notification of your videos is always a joy because I know I'm going to hear something new, and that's so rewarding. It is a wonderful composition, with a reflective and captivating atmosphere, which touches the depths of the soul! I watched the video twice in a row, when something is really good, it deserves an encore! Finally, I really liked your choice of stops, which together with the colorful flowers set the tone of beauty in the video! Thank you so much for that and BRAVO!!!
This is absolutely wonderful hymn prelude! I love your harmonies and gentle tune placed in the left hand part! Graham, every one of your new pieces is an event not to be missed. Bravo!
That is so very generous of you, Vidas: thank you! I have always thought that hymn singing in marrying music with words of devotion is such a powerful expression of worship. . . and such an inspiration for would-be composers like me!
It's a pleasure to watch a new video. This is beautiful and as you say, the harmonies are perhaps influenced by the french composers. The choose of the sounds is excellent, particulary the contrast between the two keyboards. Have a good week-end. 🎹 🇨🇵
Fantastic! Your love of this hymn is very clearly and wonderfully infused throughout your composition. So many beautiful harmonic moments - and then you cap it off with that gorgeous ending from 2:50 onwards. This chorale prelude is an absolute joy and inspiration. Thank you for yet another stunner!
I am so touched by your praise and generous comment, Paul! This hymn has always touched my heart and if my composition is able to touch just one other heart, then my efforts to create this piece have not been in vain. Thank you!
I have ample knowledge from the complex English “Hymn” world. But I do have some knowledge about beautiful harmonies and meditational music. And your composition is (of course) again up to the highest standard. Bravo!
That's very kind of you, Rien! I love this most English of hymns and I have long wanted to create an organ setting to feel even closer to the words and tune. Thanks for watching and leaving such a kind comment!
What an excellent arrangement! Already from the first notes, one can tell that fantastic music is about to wrap our souls. The score is already on my organ music desk, ready to be worked out for the next video! Love it! ❤
Thank you so much, Paolo! I'm pleased to think we are linked on this date by both uploading wonderful music to our channels. Your performance of GTB's 'Elegy' is exquisite and I'm honoured to know you found some value in my attempt to create a heart-felt response to this hymn, which I have loved since childhood. I also know that if you make a recording of this composition, it will eclipse my best efforts to play my own music . . . and for that, I shall be eternally grateful!
Another gem from one of the world's most revered organ composers. Well done, Graham. Thank you for your beautiful work and performance. Please send me a copy at your earliest convenience.
Thank you for watching and being so very generous in your comment, Theo. Having heard you play and hearing others play your beautiful organ compositions, I am always so profoundly touched when you can see some value in my own efforts at creating music that is worthy of being played on the King of Instruments.
Once again, you've created a beautiful new classic, and I can wait to play it during this Lenten season. It's such a lovely hymn, made even more beautiful in your arrangement! Congrats! 🎶😊🎶
Thank you so much, Phil. I am really honoured by your praise as you know how much I am in awe of your own very beautiful compositions, which are always so perfectly crafted.
Thank you so much, Alejandro! It is the most wonderful hymn for certain and inspired me to try and create a setting that shows just how much it has touched my heart over the years.
So beautiful, Graham. I'm not an organist, but I can picture going to the communion rail with this playing, followed by singing the hymn immediately afterwards. That would be perfect for a lent service. Thanks for sharing this with us all.
That's a great piece of work Graham ! Rather more chromatic than Ireland's original but valid in its own right. It is such a wonderful melody, which could only have been conceived in England. And Ireland is such an underrated composer !
Thank you very much for watching and leaving such a generous comment, Chris. Ireland led quite a troubled personal life, but in his music, we can detect his genius. I wish I could write something so beautiful in just fifteen minutes, as he reputedly did, with this hymn tune!
Absolutely stunning, Graham - the composition, the musical performance, and the wonderful choice of images to accompany your video. And your smart outfit, too! A wonderful CP on this lovely hymn tune. I didn't know it was from Ireland (my fault of course). Beautiful!
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, Ralph. It is a very 'English' hymn and the tune matches the text beautifully!
