Hard to dislike Robert Patrick as John Doggett. He did an amazing job with that character. Season 8 is one of the best X-Files seasons in my opinion. At least the best from after the production left Vancouver. Wish he was louder here.
Yeah, he reinvigorated a dying show, particularly with that unforgivable Season 7 (except "Sein Und Zeit"/"Closure"). Many great episodes that season, thanks to him. I wish we'd gotten more detective scenes between him and Mulder!
@@iqbalfaizercomedian4066 There were good episodes in season 7 but primarily the Monsters of the week. Overall season 6 and 7 are easily the weakest of the first 9 seasons. And yes, DOggett gave new energy to the whole thing fore sure.
Glad to read comments like this, because I have always said s8 is my favourite season and far better than s5,6,7 and s3. s7 was abysmal and I was ready to stop watching if it didn't change something, so the fact they brought in a whole new character to fill the void, I was so ready and knew it needed it desperately and Robert did an amazing job, 110% better than imagined. The ones who stopped watching at the time, missing s8, it was their loss.
I thought that the X Files would tank after Duchovny left. Not even close. Robert was just the injection of fresh air that the show needed. The Disappeared Ones episode centered around Doggett in Mexico is one of the best episodes of the entire series. The sadness he felt for his lost son was palpable.
This man is a friggin treasure. I wasn’t too excited to enter into Season 8 what with the major shakeup but his casting definitely put me more at ease. I’m glad he wasn’t used as a supplant for Mulder but rather very much a character onto his own. I was very disappointed we didn’t get to see him show up and maybe even save the day in the newest revivals.
I was worried when watching x files for the first time and getting to season 7 that I would struggle to separate Doggette from the T1000 but I was surprised as I actually eventually within 1 or 2 episodes forgot he was even the t1000, he was so good and usually a show replacing a main character (Mulder for this show) would fail but I actually really liked his character. You realise he didn't believe in aliens like mulder but just like mulder he believed the truth of whatever situation was important. He was so good.
He did such a great job playing John Doggett. It's his grit and that raspy voice that brings more credibility to the whole show given the science-fiction of it. It's a shame he doesn't remember much of it but maybe he will watch it again and give us some feedback.
Met this man 9-10 days ago and he was an absolute treasure!! John Doggett is so cool. I love him! ❤ Started watching his seasons of The X Files after meeting him. We need more Robert Patricks in the world.
Wonderful interview! I just started watching the show again on comet channel on cable. Robert & Annabeth Gish we're great additions to the show. Thank you.
Wow, he did mention Fire in The Sky. I overlooked it, thanks to whoever pointed it out to me. That film sure did influence The X Files, i would have loved to see D.B Sweeney on it. Both him and Patrick have what it takes for this genre.
absolutely love the character John Doggett - he was terrific, and totally under-appreciated at that time. I'm seeing more and more people, on a rewatch, finding a new appreciation for the character and Robert Patrick. I really hope a lot of the praise I've seen written reaches him. It was tremendous acting and terrific writing. Via Negativa was one of the best X Files episodes ever. I ended up liking him more than Mulder on the rewatch. That show should've never gone off the air - we deserved a full Dogget story and multi season run.
Totally agree. I loved him from the start when it originally aired, but I was considered an outcast for this opinion for the whole time, and defended it strongly, and for many years later, Doggett was still overlooked online when it came to fan sites, fanvids, even the myth that the show was bad after s7 continued. Only now when more people express themselves online and new gens are watching it for the first time or old fans are rewatching, do I read what I wish I read 20 years ago.
When Netflix was new and you could just order DVDs from them I binged The X-Files. I was watching 4 episodes every weekday and about 16 on the weekends, I was literally doing nothing else til I finished the series - I feel like I was also the only person to love the show even after Mulder and Scully were gone, I just wanted it to go on, I loved Doggett and Reyes both.
I just watched Bob Patrick in "Fire in the Sky." I'd forgotten he'd been in that one. I like his honesty about his acting career. I sure liked him in X-Files and am still watching those episodes via my Roku. I also enjoyed The Terminator.
Today i finalize season 9 xfiles. For me was a surprise to see John Dogget and i am so sad i discovered this so late. i think John Dogget saved the serie, because i read Duchovny had problems with Fox. Honestly i think John Dogget deserved his own season.
I always liked Doggett. I think having a new character and the new dynamic that he brought to the ensemble reenergized the writers to a large extent. The show was getting stale at that point and Doggett was a breath of fresh air.
It's funny because I just came across this joke, а picture from the Web with Robert Patrick as a T-1000 on her, and he was stand on the left side of the pics and an inscription on the right that said : "This brave police officer was killed in a steel mill by a rocker who was kidnap a child. Let's pay tribute to this brave police officer!"
He was fantastic as John doggett....that episode where he goes into skinners office and he's really freaked out and doesn't know if he's actually awake and being tearyeyed and stressed out...that was a fantastic piece of acting from him.
There's an awesome scene in an episode where John Doggett is running after Krycek (I think) in a parking garage in an homage to T2. He's a great addition to the show. Loved him in Scorpion and Fire in the Sky as well. And of course, Terminator 2. Woo, was he intense in that!
Had no idea Robert Patrick was a part of the X-Files when I first watched it. When Scully sat on that chair and then I saw him beside her, I was very pleasantly surprised. Absolutely loved his character. Have no interest in what the cringey fans had to say… Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish were absolutely brilliant additions to the show. Could’ve 100% watched and enjoyed more of John Doggett and Monica Reyes, even if Mulder and Scully didn’t return. But the show was quite messy after the transition from Vancouver. So much wasted potential. Doggett and Reyes were so great. It’s a shame that government censorship following 9/11 cancelled The X-Files and The Lone Gunmen.
It's quite sad to see his professional prospects were hurt a little by doing "The X-Files" instead of another show, but I'm glad it was cancelled because, although Anabeth Gish is a fantastic actress, as we can see on "Halt and Catch Fire", her character Reyes didn't quite work. I wish Doggett could've been brought back to team up with Mulder if Gillian Anderson doesn't want to do the series again. But they're gotta get rid of that now horrible mythology arc and improve the cinematography.

@@iqbalfaizercomedian4066 How old was Robert when he played Dogget on the X-files? It seemed to me that he appeared to be in his mid forties or so.

Well said! Definitely would have loved to see him return in the reboot as well!
John Doggett what a great character!!! Rob should got more roles like that.

he is written into the hollywood pantheon of iconic roles for his acting in Terminator 2 with flawless and dramatic acting.

X-files got even better when Robert got into it. Really loved his character. 👍
Truth! Love to read this opinion finally, considering the BS that went on at the time.
Wonderful interview! I just started watching the show again on comet channel on cable. Robert & Annabeth Gish we're great additions to the show. Thank you.
Thank you so much!
Robert Patrick, you are a wonderful actor and I love all your work, especially the character John Doggett in The Mysterious Files.
Robert is a great actor. Thanks for interviewing him!
Don't want to diminish any other roles he's done, he's a great actor, but X-Files was definitely my favorite role. Season 8 was lit

They need a 12th season and include him!! Provide real closure for all characters! He was severely underrated on the show.
I'm watching xfiles season 8 for first time. Love Doggett.
Great Interview. I really enjoyed the X Files and enjoyed when John and Monica were added to the cast. Thank you.
I love John Doggett.
Wish he would've/could've been in one of the reboot seasons.
He should have had more seasons. I loved his chemistry with Scully. And loved the stand alone episodes they did together, but there were not enough!!

Awww.... this is so ucking adorable... Thanks for sharing it
Glad I found this video! I always loved Doggett, and I'm glad you were able to get some background info with him. Great job!
Love Doggett
He's very humble and very earnest. He will never be forgotten.
I have no memory of this. Fantastic, funny stuff. Great show, incredible writing and acting.
1 of the best monster episodes was the 1 with the giant bat. That was a Doggett episode.
You were more than wonderful and I watched the mysterious files over and over again. I wish you were in all seasons, not just 8 and 9
Good to see you robert...love all that you do and glad ur still active! ur role in peacemeaker is wicked fun to watch!
I want one more season, with John.

I don;t dislike Doggett or Robert Patrick in the role... Having said that, he isn't Mulder. Mulder and Scully is what the X-Files is.
