This live at Singapore, Star Vista will blow your mind. On fan cam, but still amazing. If you watch it, you won't see Kevin/beatboxer in the shot, but he is there. In the beginning he is off stage putting up his cello from the previous song. And the sound you was hearing, was Avi's overtones.
Here is the link ua-cam.com/video/aT2Nm4fYmI4/v-deo.html
Yes! I fully agree. Mitch is off the charts in that one!
Putting Beyoncé to bed! Quite a few reactors I've watched, it's normal for me to hear "hey, where's Kevin???"
If you appreciate this studio version, I highly suggest listening to this one live from PTX! Their live version at the Star Vista in Singapore is exceptional! It's a fan recorded video but so worth it! Would love to see it! Avi does the overtone singing! There is a video called Avi Kaplan Overtone Singing Lion Sleeps Tonight - Pentatonix Orpheum Los Angeles 3-2-2014. It will blow your mind!
It’s Avi doing the overtone. Also you have to check out the live version from Singapore now that you’ve heard the studio. The audio is not the best but the vibe is amazing
Yes, yes and yes!❤
It’s definitely Avi, he drops deep in a separate low note when he rounds off the overtone.
Avi is the one who does overtone singing. I'm impressed that you recognized it; most people just go "What's *that?!"*
Avi used overtone singing repeatedly on _The Sing-Off_ and somehow the judges missed it every time. I know why I miss it sometimes; I don't have a trained ear and there's generally a lot of other things going on in any Pentatonix song, but the judges were all professional musicians, exactly the people I would expect to go "Wow!", and they didn't.
Avi is doing the overtone. Hes a master of it. Its really cool to watch him do it live.
Pentatonix is the best at the "rollercoaster ride" in a song. They are the best at making the most distinct changes and differences in their songs so as to give you the biggest impact of emotions throughout the song. This is also what makes them a great story telling group. As you know every song IS a story. They are truly Masters and not of this world, in a good way. 👽👽😆😆
Overtone definitely Avi! AHA, Singapore Star Vista is a must watch, apparently Mitch had one too many Red Bulls before the performance, it’s incredible ❤
😂 story goes in this order;
Mitch + jet lag + 2 Chugged Red Bulls less than 30min before performing = insanity coming from our unearthly angel
@@Delcattiy 😂
@@Delcattiy Mitch on a caffeine high, awesome 😄
I know that Avi has an amazing whistling control. He can stay on base and whistle at the same time. Is funny! This is an example of his impecable whistling.

And this is magical two tone
ua-cam.com/video/elqViOJuna0/v-deo.html
And this is "Aha" live from Singapore
ua-cam.com/video/aT2Nm4fYmI4/v-deo.html
As everyone has said below, if you want to hear them do this live, one of the most epic videos ever taken of them live is their performance of Aha! at the Singapore Star Vista. Please note - Kevin was temporarily off stage at the beginning, but he is onstage next to Scott through all of Aha!. Can't wait to see your reaction to that. And Avi is doing the overtone singing. He sings a bass note and a higher tone, sometime a whirring noise like here and sometimes a whistle tone. He has sometimes done it during live performances. Check out their performance of Alien on The Sing Off, where he does both tones while singing his bass note. That was a great catch!
Avi did overtones in a lot of their songs mostly as a whistle or wind sound while doing bass - this is more like throat singing from him, but anyway you can hear him doing overtones in Daft Punk and the end of Bohemian Rhapsody where you hear both a baseline and a whistle or wind noise at the same time.
That is Avi doing the overtone singing. He is so very talented/gifted. ❤
Avi was doing the overtone singing. Avi can do incredible overtone singing! Watch Aha live in Singapore - it will BLOW YOUR MIND!!!! Avi blows the speakers (a common occurrence!) and Mitch goes into the stratosphere. They were jet-lagged and Mitch had had several red bulls and he and Avi just go insane. It's a fan video so there is some peaking in it but it's extraordinary!
Avi did the overtone
There are a lot of videos on here with Avi doing overtones. I even have one on my page from May when he did it during VIP at the concert.
The arrangement, vocals, beat-boxing, insane bass, timing & esp syncopation.. this has been one of my favorite things EVER. That was, until I heard the live, totally distorted (recorded on a fan camera/phone whose mic couldn't handle + imho, sound system Avi seems to have blown out) version! The choral intro, fkng perfect timing & harmonies, energy, sassiness, MITCH.... just holy hell. Goosebump inducing the entire time!!!!!!! The live Singapore version at Star Vista is THE best thing I've ever heard so far in my life. I've prob listened to it 100's of times by now. Just insanity!!!! :)
Here for the Avi-appreciation! Have you reacted to any of his solo music? I’d love to see it if you haven’t, would be fun to hear you break down his songs.
It’s definitely part of the master plan!
I agree with the previous comments. You must check out their performance in Singapore The Star Vista.
Mitch was in particularly great form.
There is a point right after his REALLY high note, that his smile says "I just killed that"
This was a great reaction.
I'm a first time viewer and an instant subscriber.
Thank you
Mitch has a gorgeous smile in the first place, but it seems even more radiant to me from the "I slayed that shit" look of accomplishment absolutely radiating from our Queen ❤
I love to see reactions by people who know what they are doing when it comes to arrangement choices and what they are capable of musically.
For the live version I have to say the Intro does impress me even more especially Avi. And with that said I love your recognition of Avi here. Like others already said he is doing the overtones and he does it so easily even on the fly. It's crazy. I have a video of it in my shorts from one of his concerts last year. He's incredible 💚
The precision that the background parts require is insane. What is even more insane is that they can do it just as well or even better live. In the live version if the background parts get off it can go off the rails in a hurry.
This is one of my very favorite Pentatonix videos. Thank you for the great reaction to it. I'm glad that you stayed until the end when the couple were about to escape from the car trunk where psycho Pentatonix left them while they went to the campfire party. I choose to believe that they made a full escape successfully. lol.
You'd have to search for it but Avi does 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' in overtone singing. It's pretty amazing. He did a little overtone singing during 'The Sing Off' on their version of 'The Dog Days Are Over'.
Thanks, great reaction/breakdown! Def buying you a coffee, for sure. ☕ Really glad you were able to focus on vocals, many reactors are distracted by the vid.
Star Vista Singapore might be a good follow up if you'd like to see it performed live. The audio isn't great (Avi blew the speaker in the intro and it's a fancam recording) but it's the gold standard for this one. EPIC! 🔥🔥
Thank you for the coffee! I’m glad you enjoyed the reaction. This song blew my mind!
I didn't think this version could get any better... The live one kills it by a million times, imho. BEST thing I've ever heard, I've prob listened to it hundreds of times over the years! Insane in every single way, vocally!
It is worth seeing the livestream version just to watch Kevin.
ua-cam.com/video/8r3B9j2WF0k/v-deo.html
Reacting to all three versions is a bit much but I encourage everyone to watch this, just to see what Kevin is doing.
Kevin is insane 🥁 , great recommendation to see close up what is happening in this complex arrangement!
It has definitely evolved. The Singapore Star Vista (2016ish) concert was the first one where Mitch took the lead higher. Obviously, more currently, there are no overtones because that's not in Matt's skillset, but the newer lives are pretty good, too. Star Vista, though, while not the best audio is still definitely the standard. Mitch was ON that night and the performance was so dynamic.
Kevin has said at that point, the beatboxing for this was his most ambitious. Scott and Kirstin said the background vocals were very difficult, as well.
Scott, Mitch, Kevin, and Kirstin can all do overtones.

@@mmg8823 right! Now I’m gonna have to learn how to do it. I’m gonna figure this thing out.
@@PrymalChaos Be careful. I tried it and managed to relocate some ear crystals. Had major vertigo until I figured it out. (Spoiler alert: Doctors have no clue how to deal with it.) Found the Epley maneuver online and fixed it myself in two minutes.
@@mmg8823 whoa!
@@PrymalChaos It was weird. But don't let that discourage you. The Epley maneuver is easy. You just need to know that it exists.
That would be Avi doing the overtone. There's a live version of him demonstrating how he does it
Yeah I saw that radio interview, still blows my mind. 😂
I’m not sure if you’ve checked it out yet or not, but there is a UA-cam video that is a behind the scene view of Pentatonix, recording their Christmas album “Evergreen” ( Recording of Evergreen ). It is a video of the second of the two weeks it took them to record the album. It really gives you a glimpse into how they create their sound.
I was not aware of that! I'll hunt it down!
There are several live versions so make sure you react to "Pentatonix-Aha, Singapore,The Star Vista". This is the one we Pentaholics love the most. Just an "FYI; Kevin is off stage putting his cello away, but makes it back in time for the song. You won't see him, but you'll hear him.
Avi’s overtone singing. He’s a phenom.
Glad I found your channel with your Voiceplay "Nothing Else Matters " reaction! PTX was my favorite in a cappella world until Avi left. (HUGE Avi fan!!) Keep watching everything you can grab on the Voiceplay list and then check out some Home Free (Mayday, The Butts Remix, Brothers in Arms, Man of Constant Sorrow...etc). Trust me, you won't regret it!
Also- there's a YT video of Avi teaching a little overtone masterclass where he "sings" The Lion Sleeps Tonight!!
Hi I was brought to this by an Avi Kaplan search. You have some good links to Avi's overtones in these comments. He has been doing it for a good 15 years now. Does a bit of it at his concert VIP sections.
Avi's main love is writing music so everything he does now is original with a couple of his favorites thrown in for encores and Bill Withers' Lean On Me. If you listen to him now he has evolved into folk rock and is produced by Shooter Jennings. Instruments included but 2 of his band members (drums and bass) still harmonize with him.
I prefer original song writer artists but enjoyed Pentatonix for the great acapella arrangements.
Have fun with them. I will look for you when you do some more Avi Kaplan.
Bear box man was doing the spooky whistle 😂❤
😆😆
The 7-year old Singapore performance of this is a fan favorite although it's a low-quality cell phone recording; due to a combination of jet lag and Red Bull Mitch was really on that night, and you can hear Avi's sound effects. FYI -- that video starts with the tail-end of the Bruckner "Christus Factus Est" where Avi shows off his low notes. There are at least three videos from the 2022 Hollywood Bowl concert, but the "Live Stream" version is probably the best quality; the others are fan-recorded.
Now that you’ve seen this version you really need to have a look at Singapore Star Vista it was Aha on steroids. Avi broke the sound system and a jet-lagged Mitch skulled 2 Red Bulls before going on stage
Avi does the overtone singing. He does it in some of their early shows.
There is a video of Avi doing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"
I agree with all that say you have to listen to this live. Again, the quality is not great.. but you will be FLOORED by Mitch and AVI... I still get chills and still drop my jaw at their vocal abilities !!!
Avi does overtones.
Really?! He is just a phenomenally talented human being.
The live of Aha done at the Syar Vista in Singapore is what you need to watch! It's like they turned it into an opera!!
The opener they did back then was one that Avi brought to the group. "Christus Factus Est" is a classical piece that the chamber choir he belonged to at Mt.San Antonio College in California performed and he knew that the beginning of the piece would be a great segue into "Aha!". After he left in 2017, PTX either launched right into "Aha!" cold or they tried using "Greensleeves", which was a fail.
It was Kevin. Making that sound. ❤
That was Avi. ❤
This audience video that was done several years ago when Avi did a seminar at the University of Tennessee Music Department will give you a short tutorial on doing overtones. ua-cam.com/video/fEEAfNij_JU/v-deo.html
Avi does the overtones!
Don't do imagine, you will break
They all know how to sing overtones, but to the best of my knowledge Avi is the only one who's ever done it in their official videos or live performances. I only know that they're all able to do it because they demonstrated in an interview. That was before Matt's time, so I don't know about him, but I imagine the others have taught him, assuming that he wants to know - I wouldn't blame Matt if he wants to avoid overtone singing because it's so closely associated with Avi.
You can hear the whole group demonstrating in this interview: ua-cam.com/video/FKm5zNC-maE/v-deo.html ; the overtone singing question is at 17:15, but the entire interview is good. And here's a tutorial on overtone singing that I found: ua-cam.com/video/w42DQoZ-z_c/v-deo.html
Here is a Video of Avi doing those over tones.ua-cam.com/video/MmIJC65VWYk/v-deo.html
Avi does the overtones - there is videos of him doing it he can control it!
avi on the overtones
Type in Avi does overtones and you will find a vid of him doing the bass while whistling the lion sleeps tonight at the same time.
Search for Avi Kaplan Overtones on UA-cam and you will find some gems!
Avi does the overtone.
That overtone my friend is Avi
Late to the party, but go to Singapore for Red Bull-fueled insanity and Hollywood Bowl 2022 for good audio and fine sound board work.
The overtone? AVI.
Now you need to see this done live. ua-cam.com/video/aT2Nm4fYmI4/v-deo.html
Good catch on the overtone, that was Avi, he does it well not a lot but a good bit, there is a video of him doing I think something from the Lion King, he demonstrates it to a point, but he usually does a better job.
heh Hot Seat VIP for Sydney's booked lol missed out on Ultimate this time oh well, march is a busy month isn't Aroura then to,. just need AJ and Sigrid🤩🤩🤩
to do a tour and my list is complete Great insight as always "making of Evergreen" and "Gold" TBC lol
On another note, watch PTX singung Kiara's "Gold". The music producer in you will really appreciate it.
Avi can sing The Lion Sleeps tonight in overtone. It is pretty crazy. There is video.
😀
Great reaction!
overtone = Avi
Just subbed for PTX. Hard core Pentaholic here! BUT I see you love Metal. Have you checked out Tommy Johannson? He's a Sabaton guitarist/vocalist. Has his own band too called Majestica AND does amazing covers. Just Friday he released a cover of AC/DC's Thunderstruck and another great one is Heart's Alone. Please consider checking him out! THANKS For the great informed reaction.
Thanks for the tip! I’m not super familiar with Sabaton but I caught part of their set at Good Things Festival here in Sydney.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
You must react to the one in Singapore!!
I haven't seen any Allen Stone on your channel. You really can't miss out if you don't know him. I call him my white Stevie Wonder even though he's not blind, his music is so smooth. Try Allen Stone - Naturally (Live at Studio X) ua-cam.com/video/kBSxOMsj334/v-deo.html or Allen Stone - Brown Eyed Lover (Live at Sound Emporium ua-cam.com/video/ZrZv3JpOr2g/v-deo.html and another personal fav of mine is Allen Stone - Give You Blue (Live Performance) ua-cam.com/video/SRzvkKb-JRI/v-deo.html You'll thank me later. 😁Cheers
