They dont always make it through.. On the KBA though where I work usually 95% of pastes fire through the press.Sometimes though the blue tape doesnt connect and flys off the roll.. gets stuck to the idlers and what not. Gets easier to believe when you watch 25-30 a night haha
Megtec (france) invented the flying splice. The Reel has to be aligned down the press. with the use of Tiltboxes. MAN roland took on the design and integrated into their presses. There is a black marker paper on the speed up reel that senses the speed. Sort of encoder pulse so the PLC an detect the right rotation speed. The operators have to use the right tape for splice over. Special tape that has to tack to the new reel. when these reelstands fail, its a headache for us to solve.
Impossibly hard to believe technology, extraordinary...... ! But regarding the comment below, is it 100% perfect ? Do you have to re-web the whole press if it fails, or is there an instant stop ? That must cause incredible stress on the bearings and motors if so !? I scratch my head ! Thanks, S
I’ve worked on flying splicer’s but much prefer the zero speed splicer with festoons
I used to operate one of these reel stands, i found it has more chance of success if you apply the tape on a slight angle...
That seems totally impossbible, hard to comprehend.....
If there was a sudden web break how long does it take to get the press back on line??

That's the worst noise to hear. The splice breaking in the web! Lol

where are the festoons???
All our presses have 2 web capabilities so we gotta make two splices everytime
Nice 1

They have web catching devices upon bad splice occuring. The arms above the reel are the automatic web device that threads the web back in.
Left some waste there, the timing is in the fingertips. Leave the roll bare.
Beautiful lookin splice lol mine look like shit most the time
Do you use scotch tape to tape the edges down after you splice them together?

A truly appalling piece of filming.
