- When you are looking to spend your hard earned cash on pipes and tobacco, you have a lot of choices. There are severals online tobacco retailers and just like other markets, there are both good ones and bad ones. In this video, I'm going to give you a comparison on both ends of the pipes and pipe tobacco online retailer spectrum. The two examples I'm using are pipesandcigars.com (the bad) and the Country Squire (the good). Hear why I will no longer be buying from pipesandcigars.com

I had a strange thing happen just two days ago. I ordered two pounds of bulk and three of those little $10 clay pipes to try them out and two Punch cigars from Pipes and Cigars. When my order was delivered I opened the box and found my two pounds that I ordered, the two cigars and the three pipes. However, I only had two clay pipes, the third one was a $300 carved meerschum. I called them up to correct the order and get a return label for the meerschaum and have them send me my missing clay pipe. She said, “It was our mistake, keep the meerschaum and we’ll still send you the missing clay pipe and thank you for your honesty”. I said, well I didn’t really need the missing clay pipe and I appreciate the gift. I can’t complain. So myself, I don’t have a problem with Pipes and Cigars. I’ve been ordering from them for a while.
All my P&C orders have been delivered quickly and accurately. I especially appreciate the ability to buy small amounts of bulk to see what I like
Not me, I've tried emailing Pipes and Cigars several times and there's no reply or answer.
Same, I've only ever bought from Pipes & Cigars and I received my packages relatively quickly 9/10 times. Only once my package got lost in transit but it was USPS' fault and P&C sent a replacement package quickly.
My experiences with P&C have all been good so far. Once, I had an issue that prevented me from staying logged into my account on their website while trying to order on my phone. I called their number, and a polite representative apologized for the issue, looked at my account to see what I was trying to buy, and then helped me place the order in under five minutes. Everyone has the possibility of a bad experience no matter where you shop. This guy is coming off far too much like a whiner.
Also, it's Jon David Cole, which you would know if you had listened to a single episode of Country Squire Radio.
I have used P&C a bit. I received some very dry Peter Stokkebye #52 Proper English from them. Like, crumbly dust. I emailed them and within 3 hours they remedied the situation. It was utterly painless.
The Country Squire isn't primarily an online retailer. John David is a tobacconist and "mom and pop" is an accurate description. He is legit. All my favorite tobaccos are their blends.
What are they?
I am happy with Pipes and Cigars. So far they have done me right and I'm happy with their bulk blends compared to Smoking Pipes.
Jon David is an amazing guy. I’m lucky in that The Country Squire has been my shop for the last almost 20 years. You can’t go wrong with them.

I provided my frustration with P&C on previous comment. I forgot to mention that 2 of the tins I received from them were dented. In addition they were selling Crown Manola Sandblast pipe models 601,602,604, and 606. I was going to buy the 601 but on description page it indicated bowl material was Brylon instead on Briar. All others 602,604,604 were Briar. I assume it was error but notified them of mistake and asked them to correct before I purchase. They said sure no problem but never did. Today that pipe still shows Brylon. They just don’t give a crap!!
I will second your opinion of the Country Squire. I ordered some tobacco that due to no fault of the CS ended up in Guam. I'm in Michigan. The CS made it right. They immediately resent the entire order which arrived in a couple of days. Thanks to Liz and Jon David Cole. The order finally arrived from Guam and I returned it to the CS. Per their instructions. Moral of the story is that the CS really does appreciate their customers. I will be one for life.
Most of the retailers have been great to deal with. But, I absolutely understand where you are coming from. I have heard from a few people that they have gotten calls from Pipes And Cigars to fulfill orders which I’m glad they decided to do this. But, that’s only putting a bandage on their bigger issue. Good looking out for everyone one. Everyone should check out the briar report as Phil has a few more tobacconists listed. 👍🏻🔔📦

After five decades with the hobby, I've tried nearly all of the online retailers you've listed. Honestly, I've had mostly good experiences with P&C and one truly excellent experience, relating to--of all things--Esoterica Cardiff. Somewhat surprisingly, between Cardiff and Penzance my preference is for Cardiff.
I also will fully agree with you about The Country Squire because their products and services rate at the absolute top of my list of retailers. My favorite blend of theirs is Cornishman, with Riverboat Queen [formerly Rivendell] in a close second place.
You'll also get full agreement from me about Boswell's Northwoods blend; it's one that I plan to keep in my cellar at all times.

Never had a bad experience with P&C (I buy pipes elsewhere), all the stuff I had was good and not all dried out. Pipe Nook is a gem where I get some pipes and mostly tobacco, Eddie Gray has really good advice and is a gentleman with great service. Christie Pipes had unique blends and some cool pipes here and there.
I love the squire. I was just there yesterday! They just had a couple of 8oz esoterica blends laying out on the shelf! Rams gate maybe? Or something like that. Every time I have been in they have been extremely helpful and nice. I have only bought in person haven’t ordered online yet.
I agree 100 percent. The country squire just made my order right after a little snafu. Definitely worth buying from.
I cannot recommend the Country Squire enough. Great group of folks and they are helpful and personable. Very knowledgeable, too.
Pipes And Cigars is actually pretty good. Not perfect. It's hard for me to believe you get your tobacco from David Allan Coe. I'm not saying you're mistaken, but I have never gotten anything (legal) to smoke from the David Allan Coe.

Okay, brother, I get it. You had a bad experience with pipes and cigars. But you seem to be implying that others should not do business with them. At the very least, it's clear you won't. And I get the idea that you would be happy if others would not deal with them. Facts are, though, you were dealing with them in a program that had very little documentation. Meaning that it was loosely structured. So it might not be shocking there was a glitch. Yes they should have contacted you. But I have done lots of business with P&C, and the only problem I have had they dealt with very well, even though it was a computer problem. The computer problem was their fault and they did right by me. I try not to let the few bad outliers in my experience with anyone or anything to outweigh the larger numbers of consistent good behavior. I hope people will continue to do that for me. I bet they already do that for you too.
Actually they don’t do that for me. I’ve done exactly 10 separate orders with them since Oct of last year and I have now had a 30% failure rate on those orders and have had to beg them to do the right thing. After reaching out to their customer support I have only made things right once and it was not easy to get them to do that. I am definitely insinuating that if you enjoy a good customer experience you should not shop with P&C. Of course everyone if free to make their own decision but my hope is that my video adds to the data others have in making that decision.

Andrew Murphy Hey, that’s a great idea. Implemented it a year ago and haven’t ordered from them since. P.S. sharing a bad retail experience (3 of them in this case) isn’t me dragging them through the mud, it’s them dragging me through the mud. This was just a public service for folks who like additional input on what they might expect before they spend their hard earned money.
@ImPoopnRightNow i dont work for P&C but i can tell when some one dragging the company in the mud that is just what he was doing. Just because he had a bad exsperince dont mean he got drag them threw the mud like that. I also agree with wheeled piper 2 it seams that he was implying that others should not do business with them. If he was not doing that why did he even share the videw

Great review. A correction on the Owner Operator of The Country Squire he is John David Cole. It is a great place. I just made my first visit there this last weekend. Great custom made blends. I will definitely be going back. Happy smokes.

I'm not gonna diss Squire because they sound nice and I've never shopped there. But, honestly, I've never had a single bad experience shopping at P&C in almost 10 years, they get me my order quickly, accurately, and cheaply. There's not much more that I can ask for. I wouldn't expect them to baby me because I never got tobacco I wasn't even charged for.
Yeah and it sounds like he was not even suppose to have the link to buy them.
It breaks my ❤️ that a legendary tobacco blender and great gentleman Russ Oulette would be associated with the clown act that is pipes and cigars !
This is a great review and thanks for the info. I have given up on getting any esoterica blends bc they are always gone by the time I can grab a bag or tin. Waiting on some GH blends to drop. Maybe I should get on some of these site and look to see if anyone has anything. Take care and sweet smokes
Had a similar experience with p&c with this years cringle flake. Had me waiting 8 days before I called and asked about my order.

So far, I have ordered from pipes and cigars (I had a great experience), Missouri Meerschaum (best experience so far), JR cigars (terrible experience the first time, gave them a second chance and it went well)

TobaccoPipes charges $5.00 for age verification signiture which the delivery guy doesn’t bother with.

Those blends are super rare.
If given the option, people would just buy it all up and then re-sell it on e-bay at enormous and ridiculous mark ups

The Country Squire is the best place for anything tobacco in their service and quality especially for their tobacco’s and cheaper than any brick and mortar stores and the quality is over the top. They have some wonderful Blends that can be bought and any other tobacco’s from around the world

I've had not good experiences with both Iwan Ries and hiland cigars. Ordered a pipe from Iwan Ries, never got it, found out they didn't have it in stock.. they didn't charge me, so I was less offended. I recently ordered something from hiland cigars, and they charged me... but didn't have the tobacco on hand (Peterson Univ Flake) they say that "it's on the way to them" though... I'll see what happens in a week. I've had good experiences with Pipes and Cigars and smokingpipes.com ... On Iwan Ries, I talked to them and they said it was coming, still didn't get it.

I dont doubt your interaction with pipes and cigars at all. The last order I got from them, the shipped, I recieved it, and then I got a payment request from them on paypal saying the order was not paid. It clearly came out of my checking account, so I emailed them and said why am I getting a payment request, my account showed it jas been paid and PayPal shows it was paid. No response but the payment request disappeared. Very shady. Not my favorite place that's for sure. Lots of great places out there!
