I’m in that group of people. And being an 11 year old drummer. Yes. I was happy. Cobham. Neal Smith was fantastic rock drummer in Alice Coopers band. Yes. A great time! Easter1972
Amazing that you were there! My sister had this record and I was always floored by what McLaughlin and Cobham could do together. I'm also a HUGE fan of Cooper's original band. Cheers!
this solo and the one in syracuse rate as the best i have ever heard of anybody. love it when he starts sounding like led zeipplin2 ater all these years he makes my heart race. the whole band does.
on this track with MO1, and MO2 with Walden, Armstrong/Moran, JM made surreal psychedelic moments - some that stretched forward seemlessly for 45 minutes, Visions LP doing that for me - but how about when JMs bands let's incl One Truth broke it down to funk? this guitarist was totally comfortable in that American aspect of world music - as he became with Indian, Spanish, Brazilian, French (Debussy to Django) JM becomes other-worldly.
On the re-issue of Columbia's "The Best Of The Mahavishnu Orchestra" a few years ago, they included an unedited version of this performance! It's very hard to find nowadays!
Remember seeing the 'new' MO in central park. Rainy day. The string quartet and Gayle went away. JM 'There's no place like NY. If you can sit through this (glance at the sky), the least we can do is play for you'. My God did they!!!! Had to be there!
... remembering the thunder claps before the show.. ominous and loud as the band would soon be... and the mid-set downpour, unleashing waterfalls streaming down in front of the performers, off the flimsy clear plastic tarps that they hastily gaffer's-taped up last minute... and the puddles spreading out across the stage, Mahavishnu having to wide-step over them to get from place to place... amidst all that voltage..! Lord of Mercy!... and the cheers of the New Yorkers who just WOULD NOT BE RAINED OUT... maybe the best show ever for this little fiddle.
Ah. This was the Festival where the Scorching Sun made Greg Lakes jacket sleeve smoulder. I bet John was cooler in his white shirt and short hair. Jerry Goodman looks Frazzled in the Photo but they Sound Incredible. One of the best versions of Noonward Race ever. Was the rest of their Set recorded I wonder? Mahavishnu must've cut E.L.P.s egos right down to size!
Thanks for the Reply Man.Well I envy you, i guess that was the Golden Age! I first saw John in 88' with Jeff Berlin and Trilock Gurtu ~ and it was tremendous, but seeing film of MO 1 has given me some kind of immersion experience...Back in my mid~teens I met a friendly Record Stall owner who had a Suitcase of Bootleg Cassette Tapes stashed under the Counter.I knew I'd found a like~minded Soul 'cos he was blasting out a Jack Bruce Gig i'd never heard the like of before in the Shop, and we quickly connected over a mutual obsession for the Music of McLaughlin and Jack Bruce in particular. Next time I turned up the shop wasn't very busy so he drags out this Suitcase with about a hundred Cassettes in it...and they were all Mahavishnu Orchestra and Jack Bruce, with a few Van Der Graaf Generator tapes thrown in. The upshot was that he would copy the ones I was interested in and bring them in letting me have them for free. What a Guy... He'd seen John with "Lifetime" playing to 30 people in a small Glasgow Club and MO 1 at the more spacious Kelvin Hall in '72. Other key Gigs included seeing McLaughlin, Jack Bruce, Billy Cobham and Stu Goldberg in Germany in '79. Luckily Live Shows proliferate on UA-cam nowdays and it's nice to have a similar conversation with a Mahavishnu Head.Cool to know there's more of us out there.I think Mahavishnu gave us a glimpse of Heaven. Thanks again. Best Wishes. Bye for now.
@@maxinemckenzie5765 Hi Maxine, you've seen some very cool shows, too. Being a bass player myself, I have always been a huge fan of Jack Bruce & just about anything he was involved in. Never saw him play with Johnny Mac, but I DID get to see him live at club shows with some great drummers: in 1976, "The Jack Bruce Band" with a young Simon Phillips playing like, in my words at the time, "a mini-Cobham"; and "Jack Bruce & Friends" in 1980 (with the man himself, Billy Cobham, on drums, along with David Sancious on keys & guitar). Great, great shows. Thank you, Jack, RIP.
