Such a great point about gratitude. I overtrained for a marathon in May and ended up with patella tendonitis. While doing PT I got more into mountain biking while I was rehabbing the knee….and then I crashed my bike (on Father’s Day of all days) and broke my scapula. Brutal year, but this morning I did 8 miles and I felt so grateful to do it. Running pain free is something I’ll never take for granted again

Yes to this!! I had to take a break from a foot injury and and then ran through the discomfort while working alongside a PT, so to be running pain-free right now is certainly a gift! I'm so glad to hear you are healed and string together solid mileage again!

Just went through the same thing sort of. Doc called it patellofemoral pain syndrome last summer and I'm just now getting to where it hardly hurts any more other than a few short lived stabbing pain moments that only last a few seconds.

I am only training for a half, but I am a beginner runner so my training feels intensive even if my mileage is chump change compared to many. I got into running with shallow ideas of physical challenge and achievement, I didn't quite consciously realize it was going to suck me into changing my life and having to become a more disciplined and hardworking person. I thought the running was going to be the hard part, but that's the fun part, it's making the running work and gel with the rest of your life that can be the challenge.
Week by week I am slowly coming to realize the amount of work distance runners put into their training and it boggles my mind a bit. I never realized before quite the dedication and time it takes. I don't know if I will fall into the rabbit hole of running further or not, but as someone just starting to ramp up my distances in training I can say that anyone training for these long distances is incredible and is showing great fortitude and dedication, you impress the heck out of me

Could not agree more with everything you said! It takes a lot of commitment, patience and grit! And that goes for you, too, training for your first half. But guess what?! Keep going and I know you'll be amazed a year from now when you look back at how far you've come!

This popped up on my feed with impeccable timing. 7 weeks out and all my momentum has been crushed by a hip niggle brought on from overtraining. Almost a week now of no running (so 6 weeks to go now). I have a comeback in my sights. This time has forced me re-evaluate some of the fundamentals. My focus is on eating well and resting well and fingers crossed I can get back on track by the end of this week. Was so sad to not make my long run over the weekend!

Thanks for the videos Jane. I'm currently training for my first marathon in October, I haven't got to the "why am I doing this!?" Stage but definitely feeling tired from the training! The amount of extra sleep I need these days is something! I sometimes go to bed rather after my kids!
One thing you said in one of your other videos keeps me motivated "do what others won't" (could be paraphrasing) so whenever 5 days of running an 1 cross feels tough, I go back to this.
Regarding motivation, Strava is doing a good job at the moment as it keeps popping up reminders of runs this time last year when I was doing a couch to 5k. I did 24k on Saturday so It's a nice motivation to see how far I've come since then!

Thanks so much for the pep talk. I've enjoyed watching your journey over the years. As for this topic, I've actually decided that I am no longer going to run full marathons starting 2024 (I have one in November and CIM in December).I've tried over the past few years to run at least one full every year and each time, I dread training for them. It is difficult finding time to properly train, therefore, it's extremely stressful. So, I've decided that running a marathon is just not for me. I will however, still run, just not signing up for marathons anymore. But thank you so much for all your tips.

All great advice. The marathon training build up is always a process and one of sacrifice. The time commitment and the passing up of other races / running events can be demanding. I don't know how I did it -- I did my first few marathons with a group and they were so helpful and motivating. After I moved away from the group, I found myself solo and did my training solo. I had a lot of experience with it, so it wasn't too hard. As I've gotten older, though, the marathon just isn't there for me any more and I enjoy the freedom of racing more and not being a slave to my long run weekend. I think it is important for runners to really do a gut check prior to committing to a marathon if they are willing to make the sacrifice. I've tried to half-ass my training for a marathon and invariably it didn't go well. The more you put into it, the better result you will generally have. Love your advice on this Jane and good luck in Chicago! I lived there for many years and figured I'd one day run it, but never did (I remember the days you could sign up the week of the race and simply get in).

In my last marathon training (beginning January 2023) I skipped some long runs and eventually felt way behind my training load and never truly caught up. My advice that you can skip a run here or there but don’t do it on the long run. Normally I am very consident but I missed that boat in a crucial time period thinking that I can afford it - never again - the time spent in marathon training is too much to waste it because one is not motivated.

Try to dial in what you think could have been the culprit. Yes, the mind CAN convince your body to keep going, but hitting a wall is a very real thing physically. Did you get enough carbs - recommend at least 1 gel or equivalent every 30 min. Hydrating well with sodium? Saltstick caps or an electrolyte drink helps! Lastly, are you running at a truly easy pace? Those first several miles should feel very comfortable to conserve energy for later. You GOT this...keep showing up!

@@runningwithjane thank you Jane. I'll bare it all in mind. I am travelling a lot, so none of my long runs have any kind of consistency. They have all been in different places, different countries even with different climates. Usually I make it round regardless and it's been getting better easier each time. This run was a coastal path in the north of France, quite moderate temperatures, but sunny. The main difference I think was It was busy and I had to walk some sections as the path was not wide enough. I'm not sure if that put me in a different frame of mind for the run. But yes, it was like hitting the wall. I dropped my easy pace signifcantly this year since understanding what an easy run actually should actually feel like! Fueling is the only thing I do get to keep consistent. Also I did have different trainers on than normal because my others were soaked on a session a few days before. Too many factors at play to pinpoint an exact reason. I'm not giving up. But I really don't want that feeling again.

How about when you're trying to train for a marathon you may never run? The chance of being able to run my sixth major, Boston, is highly unlikely due to the high demand; however, if the opportunity should arise, I want to be able to take it.

Hi Jane thanks again for such great advice. I am also training for the Chicago Marathon and it's getting grueling for me. I am doing this on my own, and now often have started to doubt myself especially on the long runs. BTW this will be my first marathon. Any extra tips to not give up? Anyone?? 😢

Only to say that I'm in the same boat right now for Lisbon marathon. I'm just really tired right now,and although I don't want to quit, I would love to scale back the miles! By half would be nice 😂
Unlike you, I have done a couple of marathons before. Although I never trained for them properly, my aim was to get around so I know (and you should know) that if you are willing, and you've managed the training program so far, you will get around.
The way i see it, the training we do right now, is going to make the run more enjoyable - I want to get closer to realising my real potential instead of getting by. Like Jane said, and it is absolutely how I felt about my other marathons - you will look back on this time and go 'if only I did those weeks of hard graft I would have really smashed this'. Keep it up, you got this!

@@curtishills6101 if you're newer to doing a long run workout I like something like 6 x (0.25 @ MP, 0.75 easy) and then you can bump up to 1/2 miles.
If more experienced, can start with something like 4 x 1 mile at MP, with easy btwn...and progress to 3 x 2 and later 3 x 3, etc.
For weekly workouts, pyramid style is good where you start with MP, then 3 miles 5k/10k pace and end again with MP to make it feel easier. (some sort of recovery btwn the miles). I like prescribing anything that has both MP and something faster in it because the hope is that you're going to negative split your marathon and run closer to half marathon pace by the end.
Also strides!! At the end of an easy run at least once per week!
(All workouts would have warmup and cooldown...those should all be very easy!)
I'll try to do a video in the future where I can share more.

I know they say "Trust the process" and "Trust the coach"
I am training for a sub-4 marathon and I ran my longest run on Sunday at a grand 23.7km and towards the 20km mark, my legs felt heavy and I can barely keep a 6 min/km (9.6min per mile) pace. I can usually run a sub-50 min 10km. I was however hitting all my zones in TP that my coach gave me. 🙂
I was well hydrated, gel'd (1 gel every 30 mins), and 2 salt pills.
I'm hoping this will get faster as I approach the big date - My first marathon! Auckland Marathon?

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane  Рік тому +2

Hey Tony - this is a really common occurrence right now with the heat! It affects us more than we realize and I think sometimes this is due to a lack of enough daily hydration, too. It is not uncommon to have to slow down 15-20 seconds per km or more in the heat. Sounds like you made it through though! Remember too, you're running on tired legs and the peak weeks are hard on the body. Keep showing up and yes, trust that the training is working!
