SHOUT Factory is releasing a 2-Disc version of The Wizard with TONS of extras on the 2nd disc and a 4K transfer of the film in 3 months... Can't friggin' wait!
I loved this movie as a kid growing up I still remember going to the theater to see this movie , I need to pick up this on digital so I can watch it haven’t seen it in years
Dude me too I used to nes and Mario bros 1 2 3 I also have the emu on my two tablets and still have snes and n64 my old nes broke so it's gone got rid of it but thanks to the emulators it brings back the good old days
I was a 12 year old Nintendo junkie when this came out in theaters. Absolutely loved it......and still do to this day! Even developed an adolescent crush on Jenny Lewis! lol Anyway, I ordered this the second I heard it was being released. Having previously owned it on both VHS and DVD, I can honestly say that this blu-ray is the best this film has ever looked (excluding its original theatrical presentation of course). I know the print has been plagued with artifacts, edge enhancement, etc.....but it didn't deter me from absolutely enjoying it. I'm definitely glad to have it as part of my collection!
Yeah, man, that's how I feel too. I know it's not a perfect transfer, but it's certainly the best it has ever looked to my eyes. I'm just really happy to have it. It's a piece of my childhood, now preserved.

I didn't think the picture quality of this version was so bad either, but I see that you know about the version Shout! Factory has released. It kills the MOD version.
Certainly. When this video was made, this Blu was the best option, and I was happy to support. I still haven't picked up the Shout version yet. It really should have been a 4K UHD release, especially since it's a 4K scan. Just this weekend, Vinegar Syndrome announced the movie RAD for 4K UHD, so there's definitely a market for movies like this in the best possible format.

Factory officials about that, and in his words: "The price of doing a 4K scan isn't cost-prohibitive in SOME cases, where the popularity of the movie justifies it. But the cost of HDR is SERIOUSLY high. And authoring and manufacturing UHD Blu-rays is SERIOUSLY high. If it were all the same, it'd be a no-brainer. Even though a movie is scanned at 4K, it's colored at a lower resolution, because we can't even discuss the prices of HDR until we know we can make it back in sales." So what I took from that, is that even though it might be well-liked, it probably isn't as much as most movies that are available on UHD. I guess it also explains why there are six movies in my collection that still don't have Blu-ray releases to this day, and are still DVD only.
Yeah, that would be nice. Even the old DVD was bare-bones, if I remember correctly. If not for us fans, it seems like some of these movies we love would be completely forgotten.
Cereal At Midnight I already identified the equipment case used for his Power Glove and I made a crude replica with one. Also got a second case to slowly work on a better replica. :)

Always recall seeing the trailer for this on quite a few VHS releases in around 1990 but never watched the actual film, truth be told I was a Sega kid, BUT I think along with my revisit of Space Camp I may have to pay my first visit to The Wizard! :)
You should! Nintendo is a big part of it, but there's some arcade stuff too. I like it because it captures that culture as it existed at the tail-end of the '80s. More than anything, it's just a road movie for kids. Actually, if you've seen The Who's Tommy, it's exactly that with video games instead of pinball.
I bought this recently and thought it was bootleg. Everything is so cheap. The print quality on the artwork is terrible. The disc is just black. However, doing my research, all other copies I've seen online are the same. Either we all got bootlegs or it's just a piss poor release.

All that being said, Shout Factory is prepping a HUGE new special edition with new extras, cool art and packaging, and a brand new scan of the film. It's going to blow this MOD version out of the water.
Nice heads up on what we're getting with this release of The Wizard. I own the DVD version, and it's bare bones as well. It would have been nice if they would have at least put a few extras! I guess the only reason I'm gonna buy this is to see if the picture quality is just slightly better than the DVD version.
It is slightly better than the DVD. It's not amazing or anything, but it's definitely HD and the best the movie has ever looked on home video. Maybe down the line we can get some sort of special collector's edition from one of the boutique labels, but I'm happy with this one until then, if that ever happens.
The Wizard was a great advertising tool for Nintendo, the Power Glove (trash), Super Mario Bros 3 great game although Super Mario Bros 2 was a better game.

In all honestly, I never had a Nintendo 64 and I have still never played most of those games. I'm not really sure why. I was going into college when the system came out, and I also had this really weird loyalty the Playstation One, which I played every single day for years. The N64 and Wii U are the only consoles I didn't buy from Nintendo. I did play Goldeneye at a friend's house sometimes, but I still haven't played a lot of that stuff. It's kind of expensive to get into it now, and those games don't emulate very well. If they release a N64 Classic Edition, I'll be first in line.
Cereal At Midnight you know that you can install virtuall console games on wii using homebrew software and you can play with the amazing gamecube controller instead of that 3 prong disaster of a controller the n64 had.
Jordan, I definitely did NOT soft-mod my Wii and turn it into a retro gaming machine. I also definitely did NOT put every NES, SNES, and Game Boy game on it. And if I didn't do any of those things, you KNOW that I didn't install the Wii64 emulator on it and then have trouble with a bunch of games hanging and failing to play properly. Nope. But it was years ago that I didn't do all those things, so maybe I should check back in and see how things are looking now. I mean...not check back in.

Got this bluray for my birthday days ago. Just wish it had some special features like a retrospective featuring new interviews with the cast and crew.
