A trip to Telavi is a tour of an amazingly beautiful region, to the world of ancient temples and monasteries, picturesque rivers and valleys, where amber grapes grow under the warm rays of the sun.Telavi is not only the center of the region - it is the center of all Georgian wine making, which is elevated to a cult here.
In Kakheti close to Telavi at the foot of the great Caucasus one can find one of the oldest and best wine growing regions in the world. Scientists believe that wine production in Georgia is more than 7.000 years old and that the grape varieties grown in Western-Europe nowadays actually origin from Georgia and were taken from there by the Romans more than 2.000 years ago.The vineyards are located in Napareuli, Kisiskhevi and Shilda.Telavi (Georgian: თელავი [tʰeɫavi])- the ancient capital of the Kakhetian kingdom.This city is located in the heart of Kakheti, a historical region of Eastern Georgia, located in the valleys of the Lori and Alazani rivers.
Georgia - a cradle of wine, the place, where a human grew the grape vine and tasted wine for the first time. During archeological researches in the village “Telavi” 8000 years old grape seeds were found in wine jugs, also ceramic jugs of the same age. This fact shows that winemaking in Georgia is 8000 years old. To provide a basis Schuchmann acquired 120ha of land of which 60ha are currently under vines. Dark fertile soils offer an excellent basis for viniculture! The oldest vines were planted in 1986.
German-born Burkhard Schuchmann founded his eponymous winery in 2008 after falling in love with Georgian wines and feeling compelled to share them on a global scale. Burkhard was a wine connoisseur and discovered Georgia through his travels. To manage the company’s wine production, Schuchmann sought out native Georgian Georgi Dakishvili, a third-generation winemaker and part-owner of a small winery called Vinoterra that was for sale at the time.
The winery is located in the village of Kisiskhevi in Eastern Georgia’s Kakheti wine district. It produces wines out of three vineyard sites: Napareuli, Tsinandali, and Kindzmarauli, and mostly uses native Georgian grape varieties: Rkatsiteli, Mtsvane, Kisi, and Saperavi.
Schuchmann’s vineyards are located in the Napareuli, Kisiskhevi, and Shilda areas of Georgia’s eastern Kakheti region. Their 120 hectares of land are rich with dark, fertile soils planted as early as 1986. Two thirds of their land are used for Saperavi, which has a deep color tannins and dark fruit notes. Another 9 hectares is allotted to Rkatsiteli, their main white wine; this variety is a young, fresh style.
