I used to live in the US although I was born in Congo Africa and grew up mostly in France. When I went to live in the US I was Congolese/French, African/European Black woman but never called myself an African-American woman because our history, culture, collective experience and memories are too different and I took Panafrican classes when I was in the US to understand their history and culture better. And I learned that although we have many differences we also still have many similarities butthe term African-American has an history that I do not share neither do my ancestors. As a Congolese/African/Black I don't feel better or worse than African-American. We have the same roots and they are all in Africa. If I were to become American I would say I am Congolese/American, or American and African instead of using the term African-American. To be honnest that's what most non African-American Black people (directly from Africa / Caribbeans/ South America) did when I was leaving there. But to be honnest when I walk in the US others see me as Black as an African-American until I speak with my French accent and then the questionS begin... How come I am Black and French? How come Congolese/African also speak French? Where is Congo? Why is there 2 countries called Congo? Did my family immigrate in a dangerous boat to France? How come I am educated and not poor? ( yes I got that question !!!!) And then the explanation of the African continent after slavery begins...

    Definition:
    African Americans
African Americans are an ethnic group consisting of Americans with partial or total ancestry from any of the Black racial groups of Africa. The term African American generally denotes descendants of enslaved Africans who are from the United States.

I agrée! I think the term ‘African-American’ should be reserved for Blacks in American with history in America spanning centuries. Other blacks in America directly from the African continent, should refer themselves based on the African county they are from. So a Ghanaian person whether born or bred in America should not call themselves African-American instead it should be Ghanaian-American, Nigerian-American etc. Great content

This is the same as French Canadian. French people who move to Quebec would not be French Canadian because these are people whose ancestors came from France centuries ago and settled in the French areas of Canadians. Usually Italian-Americans are those who have 3 or more generations in America. They've formed their own culture in America that differs from Italy but includes aspects of it.

What about first generation Americans? I think there is a commonality in the experience of Black people whether descendants of slaves or descendants of African Immigrants. I was born and raised in America but my parents are from Guinea so I’m definitely Black, African - American and Guinean. There’s an intersection of identities and a common experience and struggle we face in America.

Girl what’s not to simply understand!! If you don’t descend from USA chattel slavery! You ain’t BLACK/African American/negro/colored/POC !! All of those acronyms have been used historically especially BLACK since 1619 to classify African slaves in USA. Caribbean/south -central Americans go by nationality, Africans go by tribes!! Everyone knows this

@@javionriley8739 First and foremost you’re wrong. Educate yourself. Africans from the continent of Africa do not go by tribes they’re from different countries and different regions that have different backgrounds traditions and languages. To say we go by tribes is make a blanket statement about Africans and their histories and traditions. Also if you don’t know, Europeans colonized different parts of Africa just up until the late 20th century. Guinea recently broke free of French colonization. As South Africa from the apartheid. In different parts of Africa there were Africans who also were made slaves. ON THEIR OWN LAND. So as someone who is a descendant of Guinean parents who grew up in a colonized country and then migrated to America, I am Black woman and that’s period. Also there are examples of iconic Black woman whose parents migrated from different parts of Africa, and they were born here. They consider themselves Black. Issa Rae. Is she not Black?
When they ask me questions about my race on the census, they give me two options to describe my race: Black, and African American.
There is a lot to be understood and acting like you know everything isn’t the way to approach conversations about this. Your hostile about something I was genuinely curious about getting someone else’s opinion on, why?

Understandable but all of the terms (negro /BLACK/COLORED/People of color) have been historically use to classify enslaved Africans/aboriginals of African descent in USA

@@javionriley8739 Those were all terms given to us besides African American which Jessie Jackson coined and it's actually held us back by getting involved in that one sided pan Africanism and letting everyone who comes to America with some melanin benefit off us and get resources that's supposed to be ours

@@TheGreatNatTurner I understand your point! But regardless of what you want to call us now (ADOS or FBA etc) that doesn’t negate the fact that those names (given to us) specifically was for enslaved Africans (some where already here) brought to USA

We are all from Africa. Black Caribbean, black American etc etc We were taken out of our homeland unfairly .. yes we may not know where specifically we came from in Africa but we are all still from Africa.. we all know what happened to remove us from the mother land and must come to terms with this deep within the heart and mind... specific tribe is abit lost for some but the key isnt so much the specifics ( although this is good and important to know) but more getting back to the brotherhood sisterhood of our homeland and people... being proud to say as the decendants of our foreparents: I am African.. those who went through slavery and pain of it would have felt proud to hear us say such today if they were alive to see this, knowing what they endured.. it's OK not knowing the nitty gritty, that was the intention of the masters to keep us half and half and not feeling fully comfortable to say it, not totally knowing within we are the same as someone born In Africa > brothers and sisters ... Say it proudly, it's OK not knowing the tribe we are all one people made of God!! Dont feel any less to say it because of these missing links... i to was taken from Africa on the slave ship !! So I don't know the tribe i came from but I am at a place now where I feel proud to say it inspite of this missing bit of information.. because that's not the key .. the key is knowing who we are and taking back the pride of what they stole from us-our identity!! Tribe or not we are Africans and proud if it !! That was what they wanted seperate us so we are never bonded within, always feeling like we dont belong there ..we belong there and we take back our pride and unite as one Africa ... they have not won with such terrible measures of divsion. God is awakening us all! Thats how they broke our strength, always by dividing us, our tribes, our families .. our foreparents would be proud to know we are awakening.. I am Christian and proud to say this!! The power in unity strategy is what need be believed in again. Blessings to you both!
