  • Are you ready to rumble? In this episode of ETF Battles, you'll see an epic face-off between: TQQQ (ProShares UltraPro QQQ) vs. FNGU (MicroSectors +3x Long FANG+ ETN). While both use 3x daily leverage and both track technology stocks, there can only be one winner. Who wins the battle? Ron DeLegge ‪@etfguide‬ referees this bout with guests David Kreinces at ETF Portfolio Management and Mike Akins at ETF Action judging the ETF battle.
Each fund is judged against the other in key categories like cost, exposure strategy, performance and a mystery category. As mentioned earlier, this a historic showdown because it's the first appearance for leveraged ETFs on ETF Battles. #QQQ #TQQQ #ETFBattles

    G O A L S:
    A) Hold at least 100 shares of TQQQ, preferably 500 shares or more
    B) When it dips 5-10%, sell a put
    C) When it advances 15-20%, sell a call
    D) When it falls 20%+, buy additional shares and sell a put
    E) Light up that cigar periodically

This is not financial advice. Only a thought experiment.
Step 1. Sell cash-secured put on TQQQ two months out at a strike where if you did it 6 times a year, you'd make right around 20% annual return just from premium.
If put expires worthless, repeat step 1.
If put gets exercised, proceed to step 2.
Step 2. Sell covered call against TQQQ two months out at double the strike price of the put in step 1.
If call expires worthless, repeat step 2.
If call gets exercised, go back to step 1.
Invest all gains into shares of TQQQ or really anything else that's less crazy.

And yes if the nasdaq drops by 30% that’s a calculated 90% loss but the loss is only temporary as the markets always come back to equilibrium. So if your a short term investor products like these are dangerous if your long term 10 years plus you’ll be fine 💎

I suppose that’s a fair response. I made $75k between May and the end of August in TQQQ, only to watch that gain disappear entirely by the end of September. I’m now back $77k in gains. My thought is that if the precipitous falls like we had in September reoccur, I would’ve been better off to sell earlier in the month and then buy back in when the market began showing signs of improvement such as was clearly visible in the early weeks of October. Instead of a capital gain of $77k, I might be sitting on 50% more. Your theory of long term investing in it is something no one can argue with; however, you can time the market in some situations. If I had a significant position in it back in March, I would’ve sold immediately to stop the hemorrhaging of losses. Perhaps it’s most prudent to hold a long term position subject to seeing signs of a market downturn- then quickly sell. When you see a pattern of several 4% or more days of losses, it’s time to sell.

Enjoyable video to watch. Could have said more about structural differences and accompanying risks of ETNs compared to ETFs though. In this sense it is not even an ETF battle but a ETF vs ETN battle.
Past performances are of course no guarantee for future returns. The American Dream ETF thus might become an American Nightmare ETF during the next 10 years (actually the performance of the last 10 years makes this scenario even more likely).
Ever wondered why all these 3x leveraged ETFs where incepted later than 2009? Because typically they are wiped out of existence in a bubble scenario. Backtesting with historical Nasdaq 100 data reveals that an investment in TQQQ on the peak of the Dotcom Bubble (bursting in 2000) would have suffered a -99.95% drawdown and would have recovered to only 16% of initial seed capital as of today (i.e. ~21 years later) despite the unbelievable strong growth during the last decade.
These kind of products are expert-only territory as mentioned in the video. There is no free lunch with leveraged ETFs and they are certainly not the 'future of investment' for mainstream investors.

Thats a multiple of 902.53 on your initial investment and corresponds to an annual performance of +21.26%. Still no life cycle but at least tremendous performance over the past 35.31 years.

FNGU has had epic returns over the last year but my fear of it is that as an ETN, there’s a risk of it delisting. Several ETNs have delisted just this year and I think once it delists, it’s no guarantee you’ll be able to sell it. Is this accurate Ron and what are the odds of an ETN delisting?

Over the last 5ys as of June 2024 FNGU has appreciated 4X more than TQQQ

Good point. But as you probably know, FNGU is more concentrated and risky, thus the higher return. On the downside, it's also likely to perform worse vs. a broader index linked ETF. Thanks for watching ETF Battles!

How are people so against these funds? If seems like if you invest in this fund for the long term you'll be rich!! Correct me of I'm wrong someone...

    • @etfguide

...not everyone wants to be rich?! The numbers presented are correct. But as pointed out, leverage in a down market loses you money FAST. It's also more volatility than most people can stomach, that's why almost nobody buys and holds leveraged ETFs through a full market cycle. But the results of long-term investing, even with short-term oriented leveraged ETFs is impressive nonetheless. Our job is to present the facts, the pros and cons...and let you vote with your money. It's our utmost desire that all of our viewers enjoy a profitable outcome.

@@dominicanoloko That’s awesome, m’dude. If you hold on to these bad boys, you’re gonna make an absolute killing. I recently invested in Bitcoin and I’m gonna invest in TQQQ, TECL, and a couple of the ARKs over the next few months. 54% over a few months really is epic. That’s 3 years for the S&P500!!!
