I have always loved your work on knives. I am 13 years old and I fixed a old case trapper and I learn it from you keep up the good work and thank you for your service
Good morning Kevin, The USAF survival knife is a great find. I was told by a old flyer the two holes allowed for lashing the knife to a stick for a spear application. Using boot laces or similar, you could synch it down good. Enjoy your videos!
My wife used to have family in Albany. Camillus and Ontario both made USAF Survival knifes. Camillus marked the base of the blade, Ontario marked the nut. I had an Ontario from 1987 on my LBE for most of the late 80s and early 90s. I've got a nearly new Ontario from the 70s, and one of the Nomex MOLLE sheathes. It's for the Aircrew Vest, it's basic leather sheath with no stone pocket sewn into a nomex pocket. They are knives that don't excel at any specific tasks, but rather work well in a broad range of tasks.
Hey Kevin, the two holes in the hand guard are for securing it to a stick or rod to make a Speer or something of the like. As always great content!!!! Greetings from the Great Lakes state!!!!
Great find! AFSK Air Force Survival Knife made in 1967. Welcome to the AFSK club! I have a collection myself. I'm glad you are leaving the patina on it, that's what I do as well. As far as the grooves on the blade, I've heard a couple of explanations and am not sure which one is correct. The holes in the guard are for lashing. Great video! : )
I have the Camillus Navy pilots survival knife. Its stamped Camillus NY 11-1968. Navy knife is recognized by the Battleshio Gray paint on the end of the pommel. Nice find!
The J. Marttiini knife is sold as a Rapala filet knife. The fish symbol on the handle and sheath spell out Rapala. I'm looking at one on Amazon right now for $24.99 with the leather sheath and a ceramic pull through sharpener. That's my favorite fish fillet knife by the way. And SFMF 0351 1981 -1984. 👍
Man, that Gerber knife fit down in that Gerber sheath or pouch just like it came with it. That was awesome the way they just fit after you bought them separately. Stay safe. Cheers.😊
Ya saved the best for last, lol. Your pilot's knife is awesome, try some Obenoff's leather condioner on that sheath after ya clean it. Your partner got a sweet deal on the E-tool, I like finding stuff I can use for everyday use. You didn't pay too much, ya paid what it took to get them home, cleaned up and appreciated.
I picked up a Camillus’ pilot survival knife 3 weeks ago in a Pawn as well. Mine has the Camillus’ stamp on the Blade-made from 1961-Jan 66’ beautiful condition-$70. The Parkerizing’ is 90% and leather perfect. Everything tight. They’re cool knives. Often pawn shops prices a rediculous. Good video 👍
I was security Police in the AF. My first base was Minot ND. The pilots used to keep their survival vests slung over the chairs in the B52 cockpits but pieces of the vest or the whole vest would turn up missing. I never did find one. lol
The holes onthe airforce knife is for lashing it to a stick to turn it into a spear, a feature retained to this day in the gerber airforce survival knives
Awesome videos and no you didn't pay to much remember it's your money and your time alot of the time the knives you find are rare and hard to find so you gotta buy it while it's there or miss out ignore the negativity you did good God bless you for what you do and thanks for your military service
I have a USAF pilot survival knife since 1983. It's a camillus also and it's a great knife. I used it as part of my LBE or Webgear for 12 years and it is still going strong! I was told by a Huey pilot that the holes were for lashing it to a limb to make a spear. I've used them for a forward lanyard when I was chopping stuff etc. another great video!!
I use too have a gerber like that that I found under the seat of a car at my dad's car dealership and I don't have it anymore so this summer I'm hitting fleamarkets and maybe I'll find one
the holes are for a lanyard, can also be used to make a spear. that's what I was always told. You can find copies of the survival knives but originals are way over $75
Doc, have you ever found any interesting vintage Japanese pocket knives? I know they were popular in the US for a while after WW2 especially around the 1960s.
Got the ontario 499 version of that camillius the two holes iv herd are for attaching to a spear or putting a lanyard through to wrap around your hand so you don't drop it also the blood groove is called a fuller either stamped in the blade for strength and to reduce weight also with the marttini Rapala they make a shorter stouter one for hunting that's thicker and not a fillett knife
I have the same Camillus survival knife but mine is stamped on the tang camillus ny. Cant seem to figure out the date on it. I’m glad you picked it up, excited to see what you do with yours!! 🔪
Great buys on all of the knives but the survival knife is a treasure. I find that value depends on the buyer, if you love it and feel like it's a value then it is. Looking forward to the clean up. Btw I find myself looking for sheaths now as well. Love all of your videos brother!
I found one of those before. A short blade and they were made for skinning game. I think I paid $5 for it, but mine was rusty. It has the original sheath. If it’s clean and not banged up to bad and all depends on the age…older the better!! I’d say $15-$30.
I missed first dibs on the short... but I have an exact copy of the blue knife in that vid... except mine is stag and was actually purchased in Germany.. if I'm not mistaken stag was illegal here by then...
Great find Kevin ! At first I wondered why you snapped it up so fast for that price! But now, as Paul Harvey used to say: ‘and now you know the rest of the story’ (or something like that)(I miss hearing his voice on the radio). yep great fine on the Vietnam era pilot survival knife. Anyways, I did not know about that extra length on the older pilot survival knives … but have read about the camillus unmarked years first versions. Now that one would be exciting to find! I do check for reference what knives have ‘sold for ‘ on the bay to help with a realistic worth on knives ( With awareness to, a bidding war or nobody was looking great buy). I have found a great information source with the Blade Forums website especially with the Camillus and Schrade collectors section! I thought I knew a fair amount from visits to the annual blade show here in Atlanta (talking with the folks who worked at /with Camillus and people who knew folks in the knife industry ( Fridays and Sundays were great times to just chat with those folks. It wasn’t as busy as Saturday ). But I found what very little I knew when I went down the Rabbit hole of knife forums. Designers / workers often chime in to chats with background or stats on production on this site… I would like to add :anybody that would be interested in other leather handled knives. Be cautious on inside of the handle corrosion I have stayed away from suspected used rusty stacked leatherhandled and preferred if I had a choice between the two ;I prefer synthetic or wood handles . This one looked in good shape overall and I would’ve bought it too… but just a little heads up.
On your Camillus pilot’s knife, the two holes on hand guard are so you can tie it to a pole to make a spear with it.
I have always loved your work on knives. I am 13 years old and I fixed a old case trapper and I learn it from you keep up the good work and thank you for your service
Thank you!! Keep at it! It’s fun. Thanks for watching!!

That Martini knife was an excellent find!
Great finds, Kevin. Yeah, the 2 holes are to tie it to something to make a spear or lance-type weapon. That should clean up beautifully.
Hey Kevin, the two holes in the hand guard are for securing it to a stick or rod to make a Speer or something of the like. As always great content!!!! Greetings from the Great Lakes state!!!!

I got one of those filet knives at Walmart years ago. I still have it. I didn't know it was special.
They’re not all that special. I just like them for some reason. LOL
Very nice whoever wins that radio is very lucky, great knives

@@theknifedoctor thank you for taking the time to answer!

Plus another great video as well.
Thank you!
Some nice finds especially the Camillus Pilot Survival knife.
Thank you!!
The "blood groove" is really just a way to lighten the weight of the knife. I have a knockoff version of this knife and love it! Great find!
It's also for strength/rigidity of the blade.
yeah its called the fuller..used to widen a blade without making it heavier or weaker
