Marath has also gotten a new combo with hardened scales and the c20 colorless creature that generates sol ring mana by removing a +1/+1counter. Probably still not enough for cedh?!
i play marath and it s a good commander but it s in a weird place, it can be too powerfull for casual and dosent have the right tool for competitiv, but as a lot of ppl already said in competitiv edh if the game fisle a bit the creature/stax deck has an advantage and marath definitly fits in that categori. One of my "problem" is how much overlaping combo should i play in my marath. I currently run probably too much and a few pet card that make my deck not competitiv but im sur you can find a balance between stax/interaction(marath death touch being a big part of that) combo and tutor to make it low tier competitiv but still competitiv
6:00 We JUST established Golos with Jegantha is really strong, and opened up the possibility of adding Training grounds/Bio's Familiar. If you're running Golos/Jegantha, you'll likely run Ninetails as well
I think that a zirda cEDH deck is plenty viable. The commander on it's own cant draw but with plenty of artifacts it can make drawing cheap and repeatable. It can generate so many combos and there are plenty of lines to tutor for it.
I'll play devil's advocate and say it's actually pretty damn amazing just as a commander in general. I'd be so bold to take it a step further and say it'd perform better if it ISN'T used as a partner. Being able to just flip the switch with a monolith is solid enough on it's own, but it's the sheer amount of ways the deck can shoot off infinite mana that's impressive. Zirda also opens the door to a lot of cheeky plays that people just won't really expect or account for: -Dust Bowl becomes repeatable disruption to punish color intensive decks, soulbright flamekin is (surprisingly) pretty viable here. While captivating crew is somewhat gimmicky, it can find it's place, stealing combo piece for 2 is pretty damn funny. -Purphoros Bronze Blooded is basically Sneak attack meets fervor, his ability offsetting costs and doging spells while making combos like Metalworker a lot more interesting. -Let's not forget that you can run Bomberman in this list with little to no issue. -Blood Moon and it's Magus have little to no impact on you, and you can squeeze in a solid amount of MLD in the deck; cycling Decree of Annihilation isn't outside the realm of possibilities and is very much an "oh shit" kind of effect to drop after you puked out artifacts. -Eldrazi Displacer can blink pieces like Dockside Extortionist for mana value. It can also re-set your recruiters, stoneforge mystic, and ranger Captain to tutor your combo, and grants protection for fox for a measly C. -Experimental Frenzy has far fewer downsides due to it only costing 2 to clear off if it ever becomes dead, and can extend your (lack of) hadn. It also opens another aetherflux combo with cards like Foundry Inspector, which you have tutors for. -Choice Equipment like sun-forger become a lot more interesting, and you can even leverage things like Diviner's wand to draw out your deck or even conqueror's flail to give you an additional Grand Abolisher effect if you need it. Your lack of draw engines becomes far less of an issue when we start to look at all the incidental combos that overlap, but don't disrupt one another. The deck also has a downright stupid amount of recursion available to it; Goblin Welder, Goblin Engineer, Trash for Treasure, Underworld Breach, hell, Karn is an all star anyways (he even forms a cost effective lock when the Goblins have their say!) that can save the day with his -2 if your piece gets exiled, you even get access to Pull from Eternity if you're really worried about grave sweepers.
I'm planning to use Zirda as companion for my cEDH(ish) Breya deck. This does mean losing a few very powerful cards (Bob, Remora, Dockside, Breach) from the 99, but having a backup combo with Grim Monolith (a card already in the deck) is nice. & adding Walking Ballista as an outlet synergizes with Auriok Salvagers. There are also some sweet Kenrith lists with Zirda as companion that lean into the Monolith combos. I think that could work, as Zirda boosts Kenrith's grind plan & Kenrith can get Zirda back from the yard.
I really think kenrith Zidra is the path to take with that fox. But I don't think it is a no brainer. It something you could do. But it could also work without it. I think it is hard to say at the current state which is going to be stronger.
@@cedhtv Yep, that makes sense. Focusing on Monolith combos is obviously rough if your meta includes a lot of Null Rods. Some early Fox King lists aren't including any nonartifact combos. So it depends on that sort of context. In a meta without much artifact hate, it has potential.
I actually figured out a line that can win you the game with Zirda, with gilded drake enemy Thrasios, also Lurrus (and Kenrith) helps to that strategy to happen for recasting Gilded drake, I will try this in my playgroup for sure.
I made a deck with her as a commander its not bad sunforger feels really good with her can get you enlightened tutor. She combos with basalt and grim monalith. Diviner's wand is easy to tutor in white and can be used to draw and as an outlet.
I'm building a breya deck with her as companion, you can still run scepter reversal and any monolith for infinite colorless mana. The problem is coloring it for infinite breya casts and damage.
Breyas ability will go down with 1 mana. And just like you say. Grim monolith grants colorless but breya demands all four colors. I am skeptic but might bring something I guess.
zirda can be your companion because the cards in your starting deck do not include your commanders correct? therefore it does not matter that bruse tarl and akiri dont have one?
i play marath and i dont think that we want the fox in the 99 and neither as the compagnon. The end about Zirda as a commander reminds me the heliode episode, in 2 month the video about the person who got in the final of a tournament with Zirda ?
@@cedhtv elsha top already runs a lot of artifacts and basalt/grim monolith and also has scepter/reversal in it would that not also fit in the 99 as additional infinite mana combo?
3:25 Thats not true, you can play only slivers with activated abilities and win with inf mana and inf dmg. The reason slivers arent rly cedh is another issue. Main issue would be, like other cedh decks, mystic remora...
I know that but focusing on getting infinite mana to combo off with it and either ping the table to death with etb or die triggers. Or would that still be too slow ? The deck would focus on distribution and getting infinite mana.
I disagree that it's not worth it as a Kenrith companion. Sure, it's not an enabler for the Kenrith win, but a creature-centric Kenrith could definitely run this and win with one of several other combos. The fact Zirda doesn't impact your choice of non-permanent spells means running it doesn't "unmake" the deck completely. It's still an 8th card in hand. Also, 5C decks have tons of candidate cards for replacement. Not running Carpet or the fish hurts, but plenty of other cards exist to replace them. Reducing Kenrith's activation each game seems worth it, and Kenrith can even bring back the fox in case it dies -- for a somewhat hefty mana investment -- but still. I may be wrong, but an 8th card guaranteed seems worth sacrificing some chance drawn cards. I made a list: tappedout.net/mtg-decks/zirda-the-dawnwaker-cedh-staples/
@@cedhtv I figured the same but as I looked I realized many 9f the cards would still be able to stay in the deck. However I'm not sure how much reducing the cost would help this deck. The main win cons I see are bolas citadel, dramatic scepter, and thopter assembly with krark clan ironworks. These all have activated abilities but dont need the reduction all that much. Would like to see a breya player tell me what they think, I haven't a clue.
I feel like you're underrating this one as a companion. It's literally like running a combo piece in the command zone. And it's not like you can't find an entire deck of good cards that have activated abilities; sure, you'll have to run some cards that are unusual maybe, but I'm pretty sure it could be done, and having that combopiece any time can be worth it for sure.
Heliod has risen recently as a viable commander for monowhite. While this is not the same since It does not win the game with one card, It does give you infinite mana so that is a quite Big advantage in my opinion. Plus hes far more useful than heliod Who is only a combo piece. I think he might have a chance actually.
I won some cedh games with her good with equipments like sunforger and artifacts such as arcane encyclopedia. Diviners wand is easy to tutor and a good outlet/draw spell.
It really is but also really hard to include in decks. I think Kenrith is going to have it in his 99 and blue pod. After that I hope it will upgrade and be played with some form of boros commander in the future.
@@cedhtv I am actually modifying my Mardu deck to be Kenrith as commander and Zirda as companion. Keeping it Mardu but added the tri lands and other ways to produce blue green mana for kenriths abilities and Zirda also makes those lands 1 mana to cycle. Also if they kill Zirda, kenrith can use ability to return Zirda from the grave so its like having another (more fragile due exile) Comander
