I spent my 14th birthday there in 2002. There is NOTHING like the sound of a Shay thundering up this beautiful West Virginia mountains! And that whistle echoing out across the hollers and over the hill tops? Heaven!
The engine in the shop at Cass was number 5 the loco I rode on in 2015 I think I had to take a photo of the engine I rode on with number 5 and it is 5 it nice to see someone doing a tour of cass
I’m amazed that the powerful Shay locomotive can push a train up the highest mountain summit without the use of a cog railway like the one in Mt Washington NH. I’ll probably enjoy the Cass train up to Bald Knob after experiencing the Mt Washington Cog in New Hampshire. Still I am just as hooked about the West Virginia Scenery as compared to the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Accept these are the Appellation Mountains.
I DID THAT SOME YEARS AGO, IT was fun except the ride down was not fun for the huge amount of very thick smoke, Bad. The last time I looked the long ride was 79$ each. No way I would pay that much. Check for yourself, I might have been wrong. The Green Bank radio telescope is just around the mountain. Being a Ham Radio Op, that was much fun for me. It is the largest land fully steerable thing in the world.
The Shays on the shop deadline are 7 (Meadow River Lumber No.7) and 10 (Brimstone Railroad 36), 7 doesn’t have its smokebox and 10 doesn’t have its Cab and Coal bunker but the third Shay on the flatbed, which is that?
The fog creates a nice relaxed felling of you ask me, I also adore these mountain railroad.

Awesome! Me and my father rode on the greenbrier express back in late July, it’s all truly amazing!

Great Video! Cool to see you visiting.
Really wish I could see Cass. The closest I’ve got is the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine.
