Thanks for your clear and informative video. I have a few raised beds (about a metre high, keeps the dog out). However, each year I need to top up my garden bed and I like to add some nutrients too. Potting mix, compost, well rotted manure etc but I also like the idea of letting some seeds just come up like your tomato from a previous season and I also have some perennials too and wonder how I can combine allowing seeds to reproduce on their own like your tomato while also adding soil/nutrients to my garden bed? Thanking you😃🪴
Yay thanks so much 🌱 I do a light top up between one season and a heavy top up the one after. Tomatoes are pretty good at finding a way to grow though haha 🙌
I learned to keep seeds not in my garage where the temperature fluctuates with weather or change in seasons keep in room with constant temp or moisture will build up in bottles I know you know this already lololo
Crops that I have been collecting seed and re-sow is - cherry tomatoes, chicory, basil, okra, eggplant, kale, coriander, camomile, parley, mullein, lettuce, and chillies. 😎
I've found that tomatoes, zucchini, and melon can produce viable seeds while the fruit is still edible. I've grown hundreds of tomato plants from seeds from store bought tomatoes, and there are plenty of melons where the fruit ripens and the seeds mature at the same time. Zucchini is interesting because it can actually be grown similarly to a winter squash, if you let the gourd grow to the size of your leg. The skin will cure just like a winter squash, and it can keep for a few months on the shelf, during which the skin will turn slightly orange. At this point, the inside will hollow out and you can get the mature seeds, and the gourd itself is still edible. You just have to cook it a bit longer.
That’s really the best scenario isn’t it! If we get to eat them too 👌 it doesn’t take long for a zucchini to get big! I’ve let cucumbers go too long and had crunchy seeds inside that were not very nice haha 😬
Super inspired! Love your videos ❤️ I've got self-seeded tomatoes everywhere 😂 - they even do well transplanted if they pop up in the path. Question: If you live in a damp mountainous area, what are the best ways to dry and store your seeds?
I know right they are my favourite! I would get them dry and keep them in an airtight container in the refrigerator- that’s a great way to store seeds anyway 🌱💚
"Im so inspired....!!" I just found out about the cross polination possibility few days ago ..since im planting carolina reaper close to jalapeno...which they are now flowering...its kinda surprised me at d beginning.. but i will make sure.. to isolate the next fruit ...
Yay! You may end up with something extra delicious but next time you can put little exclusion bags (breathable like fine netting) before the flowers have opened and then save those chillies for seed 🌶
I am sooo excited! I planted mustard seeds..the bees love them & Im excited2 save the seeds!😁I have also let my lettuce & brocolini seeds go2 flower...
Seed saving is so much fun! Yesterday I picked asparagus berries (poisonous so don't eat) at a friends house to start my own asparagus patch. Let's see what seeds I save today 😊
Great video Holly! Not sure what went wrong with my garlic, it is due to be pulled out in November (9 month mark) they have been growing well and are thick some are as thick as leeks. But when I dig down to see the bulb there is no bulb? Not sure what happened they have been plagued with Black aphids during the last few months not sure if this is why they haven’t grown the bulbs. I’m in Melbourne any ideas of where I went wrong is appreciated. It’s frustrating as i used the whole bed 2.5m x 2.5m dedicated to garlic and It looks like I won’t have any 😂 🤷♀️
Oh no that’s so frustrating! I’m not a big garlic grower I just pop them in randomly between other things. Have the leaves started to die off? They fatten up in the last little bit of growing. The leaves start dying down and put the energy into the bulb.
@@SustainableHolly yep some of the leaves are dying off I don’t get it. I think next year I might try growing a few in pots. Not sure what went wrong with these guys. The black aphid thing was pretty gross, I would spray them off with water but they kept coming back
@@thirstymercfan gaaah I’m also having trouble with those this year too they are attacking my orange 🍊 I’m going to get out there today and try and blast them off and maybe a natural spray on the new growth. I hope you find some garlic in your patch! Maybe let them go a little longer unless your due to get rain.
They need sufficient cold weather to separate into bulbs. But maybe you are aware of that already... Green garlic/solo garlic is super good too though.
“Like a seed fairy” is now my goal in life :)
Haha i love it! 🤣🧚♀️
I cant wait for my mustard seeds to dry out..the bees love the flowers!
Thank you for the informative video Holly. I'm definitely inspired.
You are so welcome!
great sis
Thanks a lot 🌱

Saving seeds is so relaxing to me. I save seeds from everything regardless if it was cross pollinated. Like you said, its only for your home garden.
Yes 🙌 It is so relaxing 🌱🌸🌱🌸
