- Silicon and germanium have properties that make them useful in solid-state devices. By adding impurities to silicon and germanium crystals in the right way, we can create electronic check valves and relay valves. We call these devices diodes and transistors. This video doesn't talk about how to use diodes and transistors but shows how they work on the molecular level.
