  • Explore punk fashion around the world - from New York, California, London and Germany to Iran, Myanmar, Cuba, South Africa, Russia, and Japan. Punk fashion in the 70s pushed against cultural norms, embracing the androgyny of rockers like Patti Smith. Malcolm McLaren brought New York punk style back to London. Geometric shapes were incorporated into makeup for a striking look.
    When I, a shameless millennial, think of punk fashion, images of models and rock stars in the '80s and '90s immediately flood my mind. You know what I'm talking about: Courtney Love's signature smoky eyes, slip dresses and grungy outwear, Gwen Stefani's staple plaid pants and bandeau tops, the myriad of leather jackets, studded belts, and ubiquitous shades of black worn by all the rockers in that era.
    Sure, it's easy enough to conjure images of what punk fashion looked like during that time - partly because so many of the styles have made a comeback in recent years - though not everyone is as familiar with what inspired the timeless sartorial trend to begin with. For instance, did you know that in the '70s, punk fashion was first influenced by the androgynous styles of rockers like Patti Smith and Joan Jett? And was then brought to London, redefined in Germany, adapted in Iran, amplified in Japan, and so on.
    In Germany, punk evolved into German New Wave, with fluorescent hair color and dramatic makeup. Iranian punk took the classic London punk aesthetic and found ways to adapt it within their religion and culture, incorporating long sleeves and creatively integrating the hijab.
    A small community in Myanmar stayed underground during decades of military rule. The Cuban punks known as Los Frikis were outcasts, often homeless. Their rejection of society led to early incarnations of the crust punk aesthetic. South Africa's burgeoning punk scene was influenced by hardcore punk's pared down attitude. Pussy Riot brought protest punk to the forefront of Russia's music scene in the 2010s. Harajuku punk took on the London aesthetic and amplified the fashion.

      Punk is not just a culture, but a movement and a rebellion within their music of their certain disliking of society, in fact they do not care of how they dress. You can wear something dramatic and be considered as punk, or not even have to dress like it and be still considered as punk. But during the 80s-90s in New York most punks get beaten up for the way they look so sometimes they can't handle a week to dress up the way they do.

    I was a punk in England from 1977 to 1982 and we dyed our hair different colours as well as spiked it.Leather biker jackets didn't become part of the look until after Sid Viscious died really and the geometric painting of the face soon died out after about 1978! We just used a lot of eyeliner,lots of different coloured eyeshadow,lots of lippy and stripes of deep pink blusher,lol!
    After Sid died and the Pistols imploded, the leather biker jacket became uniform along with skinny jeans- which we had to customise ourselves because you couldn't buy them that tight in those days!- and band t-shirts.It became a bit of a uniform really and lost a fair bit of the originality and uniqueness that it started off with in '76-77!
    Finally, I have to point out that, whilst the punk movement was passionately anti-racist and we all loved reggae as well, hardly ANY black kids were into punk music nor the scene at all! Black kids started mixing with white kids once the Two- Tone Ska movement started, which orginated in Coventry with band like the Specials,originally known as the Coventry Automatics, who combined punk and reggae sounds to spark the new Two Tone movement!

    While all of these "fashion styles" may exist, they are not often seen on actual punks. Plus they are saying punk as if it just one thing.....there is an entire list of punk subgenres. The crust look is seen across the world and is far rougher than it is portrayed here. Even the general fashion of punks across the globe is varying and highly dependant on, not only where they live, but more about who they hang with, what they believe in, and what they listen to.

    NYC "look" didn't come from pushing social norms. It came from all of them being too broke to buy descent clothes. It was cheaper to re-stitch your clothing with what ever you had at hand or in the classic case, safety-pin your clothes together than to buy new clothes. Richard Hell talked about how Malcolm McLaren saw this when he visited NYC, he thought the stitched up clothing looked cool and brought it back to London with him. But it was not a conscious effort.

    • @plasticbottle4270

      I think if someone has a rebellious attitude, they aren't gonna express that through dressing like everyone else does, so there was probably a punk "fashion", as I heard it heavily featured DIY, wich is a thing that wasn't really mentioned in the video.
      But I guess wearing clothes most people don't wear does takes a rebellious, I-dont-give-a-fuck attitude, so, I partly agree, being a punk probably needs a fitting attitude too.

Besides a commercial fashion shoot is totally ironic.

    I think people are slightly missing the point in terms of authenticity. Many people say German punks don't look like like this, which is true but they clearly stated that this look was based more on the New Wave and New Romantic style that simultaneously began to grow in Germany. As for Russia, we have to remember that this isn't all modern punk and more a collection of interesting influential styles, I feel like it's more of a summary, you can't represent an entire nation in one video. As for English punk, I will admit the facts are wrong and the style is muted, However doesn't it kind of defeat the purpose of punk to over analyse a tribute video.

      wee wee woo wa punk doesn't exist anymore. Grew up punk in the 80s-early 90s: We were poor kids who were political (usually anti-establishment, anti-government control). We shopped at thrift stores due to having little money, got creative with making our clothes, had to REALLY go out of our way to go to shows, ordered music (through zines) and at obscure record shops.
      The attitude/culture isn't really there anymore. The internet and commercialization of the culture killed it.

But I guess they are looking at this from purely a clothing perspective, without much concern for what "punk" means as a subculture. I mean, Harajuku punk is not terribly subversive compared to other styles. Kogals are way more punk in mentality, but they don't fit the stereotype for fashion.

      If you look up “924 Gilman St. 1980” you’ll see that almost everyone dressed like that. Now black shirts and vans/converse are considered “emo”, but it all originated as East Bay Punk.

      @beverlydavis2219 6 років тому +2

      +Saint Jimmy all im saying is that true punk had nothing to do with emo. emo was made. in 2005 but punk was made in London and in new York in 1976 and this is coming from some one who is a punk

    • @unknown6390
      @unknown6390 6 років тому +5

      @@beverlydavis2219 Emo wasn't made in 2005, and it's roots are directly from Hardcore. If you're such a "true punk", you'd know that. There were many emo bands before the wave of pop punk emo groups of the early 2000's.
