I never knew this. Thanks for sharing knowledge. I love each of these pieces of music. Bach is a very interesting person. He composed so many masterpieces and lived his entire life in a small region of the world. I understand that he became virtually unknown until Mendelssohn shared his music. I don’t know if that is true. I enjoy your music and music history videos. Thanks again for sharing.
That is true! Thank goodness for Mendelssohn- he dug up the Sonatas and Partitas, and the rest followed from there. There are still a lot of musicians and teachers who don't fully understand Bach's just incredible- for lack of better words- godliness. He's the best! :)
To come from "Small Aliens with Pointy Teeth" to this is quite shocking, but in a really, really good way!! Well past my musical knowledge yet informative and very enjoyable. Please tell me you two are bad at cooking or housework or something because, so far as I can tell you are remarkable at everything I've seen and heard so far!
Haha! It's a bit of a stretch, I know! I would love to tell you we're terrible at cooking but... I cook constantly and Illya brews beer and makes bread, lol! I'm really messy though, if that makes you feel better??? More videos to come soon :) Thanks for always listening!
Are you referring to some of the quotes? A lot of those came from the preface in Barenreiter edition of the score- the facsimile editions we used as images can be found online if you just google 'facsimile edition'. You can also purchase a facsimile edition of the inventions, or just about any other big Bach work- they're beautiful, and a great work to add to any score collection!
Hey I’ve been subscribed since u had 300 subscribers I love your work and I know you’ll make it big!!! I might have a Stradivarius it was a gift but it came without a label I’m hoping I can go get it appraised just saying lol
Thanks for sticking with us! It's very much appreciated :) Definitely get it appraised! The likelihood of it being a Strad is, I admit, somewhat slim- but hell, you never know! It could be something very interesting! :)
Joys of a classical education...Bach is definitely much more than a sublime sewing machine. As one without a formal background, to me the Inventions are delightful little bites of instructive entertainment that do not spend a lot of time on thematic development. Some, like the No. 8, seem to entice novice keyboardists to try them out, not necessarily in tempo like Illya. They quickly find out how much discipline and practice are required.
Oh, but they're SO rewarding when you finally get it! I've only played maybe two of them, and they are just- so satisfying, and so complicated somehow. Thanks for listening! :)
As I lumber through learning the Inventions, although “lumbering” may be too elegant a verb to describe my process, I wonder if I’ll ever get to the Sinfonias. Calling them Three-Part Inventions seems disingenuous and a bit cruel as it makes them sound like they are a mere baby step up from the Two-Part Inventions. They ain’t, not for me at least. The great news is that playing the Two-Part Inventions is such a blast (my tortuously long learning process was slightly less than a blast). I recently learned #4, at least good enough for government work, as they say. I don’t know if this one is easier than #1, #14, and #6, but it took me considerably less time to learn.
Hey, congratulations on 'lumbering through', as it were! They're not easy pieces! Illya thought it would be a quick project, doing all the Inventions- not so! And any Bach in your life is SO much better than no Bach at all :) keep going!!
Thank you for the video, but the playing in the background while speaking is very (!) distracting. It hinders both from listening to the coments and to the music.
Very informative. I’ve always liked these inventions. Thank you.
Now having a second listen to make sure it all sinks in!
Greg, it's so good to hear from you!! Thank you for continuing to listen, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Hope you are doing well! :)

Excellent video! Thank you so much for posting!
Great pedagogy and performance.
Greater background information, though without music it would be easier to listen.
I really enjoyed the video... where can I find the preface you displayed in the video?
