I am actually working for local government right now looking to make the change to civilian HR but I before watching your video I was on the fence about the change for the same reason you stated early in your career, they have promised me the deputy director role but like you said that’s not going to happen until they current deputy director retires meanwhile im struggling to make ends meet. Thank you for this. I just started a HR Assistant III position with the city (Police Dept). At just 2.5 weeks in my trainer announces she has found a new job and will be training me on FMLA, PPL etc. that’s on top of my duties at which I was hired to do. I feel overwhelmed and I think a slower pace would definitely help me feel confident and learn what is necessary to do a great job.
You’re welcome! I’m sorry to hear this but let’s put this in perspective bc sometimes our emotions get us all worked up for something that’s not so bad. How many EEs are in the police dept? How often do they have claims? How many are typically open at a time?
I had the worst experience in federal government HR. I worked under a bad manager that couldn't lead our section. Our leadership knew he was having issues, but they could do anything about it. He was a career gov employee, so it takes an Act of God to move him. By year two, I knew it was time to go.
Another beautifully timed video, Timeka! 💜 I actually start my HR Assistant position in our municipality's Learning and Development sector this month (I was preppin' for that interview with your elevator pitch advice lol). I started last year as an HR Coordinator in hospitality and although I learned ALOT in a short amount of time, the environment wasn't for me. Thankfully, I'll be getting paid more as an HR Assistant, I still want growth and money (lol) down the line. Is it bad to only stay for a certain number of years in local government and then move back to a civilian HR role? Especially if pensions are out the window!

In SC pensions have been phased out, but I haven't done research to verify that it's a national thing, so make sure to verify that (especially since that's one of your top 3 reasons for the change)

There’s definitely transferable skills from military to civilian HR. I made the transition successfully a few years ago
