Ice pick or orbital lobotomy was pretty common before regular mental health practice. The Kennedy family did it to JFK's sister as a way to keep her from being an embarrassment.

@@sproductionsinc no. Had the procedure actually worked, she would’ve been released. It is supposed to “calm” a person, it also “eliminates all emotion”, but it “calmed” them. There are quite a few people still alive and living in society who had this procedure done. Most people have no idea who they are.

Her name was Rosemary & was developmentally challenged, though the doctors couldn’t diagnosed it. As she got older, “Rosie” grew rebellious as she was frustrated she wasn’t on the same level as her siblings & would sneak out at night. Worried, they looked for solutions. Those that pioneered lobotomies assured Joe Kennedy it would be successful & solve the problem, even though the AMA hadn’t approved it & there were many failed cases. So without his wife’s knowledge, he allowed the doctors to operate & it was immediately obvious it had failed. Rosiewas then immediately institutionalized & Joe isolated her from the family. Yeah, everything I’ve read about Joe told me he was a big “d*ck.” Eventually, the family re-established contact, especially her sister Eunice…they developed a special bond. It was Eunice that created the Special Olympics as a result. As president, JFK proposed & signed legislation to improve the lives of those with intellectual disabilities with Teddy continuing that work. Rosie died in 2005.

I was in a cooking class about a decade ago. During one of the first classes of the semester, we had to fill out a sheet about food allergies/sensitivities. AFTER we did that, the Chef teaching the class told us we were going to be eating oysters (not sure if they were raw or cooked). Now, I am EXTEMELY sensitive to textures, and slimy things make me puke. I told the teacher that, and he said it didn't matter, I HAD to eat them. Well, that day came around, our itineraries told us what day we were doing seafood, and I called in sick...as I was already retching at the thought of eating oysters (not a big seafood fan in general (though I do like some good crabcakes). I even got a doctor's note. Well, that teacher wasn't happy, but I wasn't faking, and he couldn't prove I was if I had been. He was one of the rare teachers in my schooling career who didn't like me. I ask a lot of questions, as I like understanding stuff. I've learned since, that a LOT of chefs don't like being asked questions, it's their way or the highway (not all, of course, but many) and he was a prime example. Ah well. You can't win them all, and I passed the class with a good grade.

"Melancholia" was a commonly used term for depression and/or bipolar disorder. Depression was a known ailment at the time, but melancholia was the previously known phrasing of the condition.
"Daydreaming" was the diagnosis for autistic or inattentive ADHD, but also for dissociative fugue or depersonalization-derealization disorder and a host of other situations where the person might have a difficult time focusing/staying present. Like, that could happen with low iron too. Chronic low iron that doesn't respond to treatment could be caused by Celiac disease which was just becoming understood in 1947 when the series takes place. So misdiagnoses according to current understanding of these conditions was common, and you could end up in a psychiatric facility for all kinds of bogus reasons.
Also yeah, the ice pick thing. That's true to history, although they called the pick an orbitoclast. Not sure about operating theatres with outside spectators like this, though. They were a thing in universities and hospitals in the 19th century and before that, because you needed places to show students how to perform surgeries or what the human body looks like (with cadavers), but not quite sure about them existing in psych wards in the 1940s. I wouldn't be surprised though as those facilities were pretty awful.

    Greetings Ashleigh
Yes priest can live together in monasteries, rectories, parochial or clergy houses, chapels or chapel houses, presbyteries, or priories, just to name a few of the names for their joint residencies.
Since its 1947, the 'interesting looks" are more likely about racism or some kind bigoted prejudices from her upbringing.
While I never seen the show, I will venture to postulate that the "fantasy" Mildred proposes about the married couple and the child is supposed be her ACTUAL life backstory or related to the "Priest Killer". Yes, I believe he is the "brother they took away from me" that Rachet was referring to.
There you go it proves that Ratched and Killer are related. The brother is probably more of a Sociopath than Schizophrenic or Psychopath. She lobotomized the priest to the point of vegetation to prevent him from remembering and testifying. Without an eyewitness, it would be harder to prove the brother was the killer. If he can control his impulses, he can be "shown" to be gentle and harmless. Thus, not very likely to be the killer.
As someone who has eaten oysters, they can be a little salty and maybe 'slimy' but can actually taste good. Compared to people that eat frog legs, snails, bugs, goose liver, and some of the 'strange' Southern foods and meats, oysters taste MUCH better. They use (choice) to eat oysters by the secretary is that oysters are believed to be an aphrodisiac and put people more in the mood for a little "playtime" in bed, if you understand the meaning,
The use of the vibrant colors is to emphasize the audacity and excessive separation from reality both of the mental patients, but also of Mildred's intentions and actions. I hope you realize that Mildred is the antagonist or 'bad character' of the story and not the hero or even anti-hero.

It's a grim reminder seeing the woman who was there for a lobotomy just because she was gay. Mental health practices from not even that long ago (my grandmother lived through this time) could be so bad that they feel like they're centuries removed from us. It can tell you how far we've come, but also how easy it could be to slip into some terrible practices if we slip backwards even a little bit.
As with every video of yours, I recommend the movie Imagine Me & You, as well as Zsazsa Zaturnnah.

In keeping with the ever present theme of Nurse Ratchet's intolerant precision:
1 - Nobody would have said, "Have a nice day." in 1947. In any case, nobody ever would have said it to Mildred Ratchet more than once.😬
    2 - Thorazine™ (Chlorpromazine) was first synthesized in 1951.
I will find a way to watch this series.
I knew someone in 1972 who was diagnosed a mild schizophrenic and accepted her doctor's recommendation for a prefrontal lobotomy. She deserved better, but she had already been so brutalized with electroconvulsive "therapy" that she would have signed anything to avoid another session of that. Afterwards, she could still think fairly clearly, but she could barely communicate her thoughts at all. You don't want to know the rest.

I haven't seen this show before. I enjoyed watching with you. I will see you next week for 13 Going On 30. If you were watching the original mermaid I would tune in Friday. Enjoy your weekend, and have a happy birthday.

I have to say, as a fan of both the book & film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, I absolutely despise the premise of this show. To make Ratched some kind of scheming sociopathic criminal with a supervillain origin story doesn’t just miss the point of the source material, it flips it on its head. The book & films are indictments of institutions, not “bad apple” individuals, and the fate of McMurphy is meant to show us where the internal logic of those institutions leads, not the sadism of one aberrant lobotomy-happy psycho.

Bravo and thank you. As Is I said somewhere else....There are people that will love this and those that appreciate good shows. This is nothing more than another poorly executed cash grab on a classic work.

I know that you like to do tributes when a star passes away, so I sincerely hope that you find time to acknowledge the passing of Lou Gossett Jr. by reacting to Enemy Mine, A Raisin in the Sun, or the "Fiddler" episodes of Roots. You are the best, always have been. Thanks for sharing so much of yourself, and, of course, Happy Birthmonth 🎉

My problem with this show is the same problem I have with American Horror Story. It starts out strong, but goes off the rails and seems like they're making it up as they go because they didn't have a concrete story line. Even actors confirmed they don't usually get scripts until almost last minute.

Because shows like this are all style, no substance. Made to pander to a pseudo-mature audience that likely says "OMG!" a lot.
