Finally got around to getting the fine grit sand papers, leather, and cerium oxide to polish a dark opal set on a ring I found. Turned out the scuffs were so minimal, I didnt even need the sandpaper! The polish was more then enough on it's own! Thanks for sharing this info!
Thank you for posting this. I have a WW 2 era ring that was my grandmother’s. It is in similar condition because it was worn so much. My mother wore it through my childhood and then polished it up and gave it to me when I turned 18. It needs some TLC.
I find it interesting how the wear in the 'before' picture seems to follow the color pattern somewhat. I am guessing that there are subtle changes in durability of the different parts of the pattern. It's all silica, of course, but how the spheres pack together seems to affect hardness. I know nothing of Opals, but they are nice to look at.
I have done in the past using a small amount of Silvo (silver cleaner) and a soft piece of leather. Rub the opal on the leather using the Silvo as a polish, and re-wet with a drop or two of water when needed. This technique doesn't remove the deeper pits or scratches, but it definitely brings back the high shine and brilliance of the opal.
@tigertimby I was wondering if I could just use silver polish. However I feel the pits in my opal may be too deep as mentioned. I may have to consider using ceriums oxcide and fine grit sand papers.
Hi Justin Maggie & Richard again. Great video. We have come across something almost identical, but with prongs. And it also appears to have been worn about 20 years and has lost its lustre. It's a little bigger than this one in your video. It'll be a while before we send it out but we'll get with you on the particulars when we're ready. But out of curiosity the Stone that you are working on giving it similar to ours, Is this a black opal? Thank you and hope to hear from you soon
I just noticed my opal has turned black. A couple days ago I was doing some soldering for my Stainglass window using flux could that of damaged it is this permanent? Thank you
Hi! Can one use a dremel to polish a prong-set opal? I have a really pretty Australian opal ring that is very dull from wear. I know it would be beautiful polished again.
Sir i have a Yemeni Agate. Is it possible to get it polished too? Please reply as my grand father gave it to me and it is from the late 60's. I am worried as it is very scratched and if i might be able to get its condition restored or not?
There's a ring at the pawnshop where I live with a huge opal in it, but it looks cloudy. I was wondering if I could do this. It looks like there is alot of color behind it.
I have a Pandora serenity nature ring with moonstones that are cabachons. They sit in a bezel setting on the ring. The moonstones have lost their shine. They look rough on the surface instead of shiney. What can I do to get the shine back?
they are beautiful but they do get dull with everyday wear... if you could polish it like this every so often that would be great but I assume you would still lose some of the stone each time you did this...
Ugh I wish I could find a jeweler to do this for me. I have a large opal and Ruby ring that’s 60+ years old that has never been polished since the day my grandfather bought it for my grandmother.
I thought that opals were porous, water would cause opal to shrink away from setting & owner would lose this lovely gem from setting. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Hi, I have just purchased a beautiful antique black opal ring from Australia which has a similar issue to this stone. However, the setting is a flat prong setting. Does the stone need to be removed from the setting to be polished? If yes, what advice can you offer about polishing it?
Hi justin! Im from California and i have a double opal ring almost identical to this one! If guys do..How much do u guys charge to do this process? And can a customer ship to u there item?

Wow! Who knew you could do this!? I have an opal ring that I thought was ruined! Now I know it can be fixed, thank you for the information 😀
Thank you for taking the time to show us how to do this. I appreciate your video.
dclaet you are welcome
Your customer will be thrilled to see her cherished ring looking brand new.

Hi Justin, I was hoping you could do a quick video on polishing an opal that is set in a ring using a dremel. Thanks so much!
Thank you sir! Nice to know they can be salvaged...I hope u are doing well. Bless u and ur family...love ur videos!

Back to better than new! Pretty setting. I believe that may be the type of setting I want to go with.
Your voice if perfect and calm explaining everything, cheers !
Thank you 🙏
I was scared that you were grinding it all away but it looked so good at the end
very PRETTY

Beautiful ring !!!
A beautifully set ring!

Excellent video. I have two opals in settings from lightning ridge in Australia.
I just noticed my opal has turned black. A couple days ago I was doing some soldering for my Stainglass window using flux could that of damaged it is this permanent? Thank you
Is there any way to do this at home?

Awesome video!

I will be honest and say this stressed me out a bit. You ARE the man though so I took a breath and relaxed.

Will this process work on jadeit?
Thank you! Beautiful ring too :)
Thank you for sharing
Hello. What is the finest sandpaper you use in the end to polish?
1200 is what I use before I polish
why not use your nova tip on the dremel .
Hey Justin, I know this is an old video but hoping you will still see this question…😅
Is cerium oxide safe to use on opal set in white gold?
Yes it is
Hi Justin, can you polish a ring for me??
Is is a bad idea to get an opal engagement ring? I found one i love but now i'm worried it wont last in everyday use.. (gold ring with one opal stone)
It depends on how rough you are and the design you have made. But I have people buy them all the time for Engagment rings
they are beautiful but they do get dull with everyday wear... if you could polish it like this every so often that would be great but I assume you would still lose some of the stone each time you did this...

I came here because I have one too
how much karat weight is lost?
Only a few points
How do you clean the ring/opal after you've put it on the felt wheel?
billyc2010 in an ultrasound machine. Or use soapy water with a toothbrush
@@blackopaldirect Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated.
I really have the same situation but I don’t have machines to polish it.
Hi, how do I take out an old damaged opal from the ring please
Send it to a jeweller
Can you help me grinding my opal?
could you use 1200 wet and dry paper
Yes but it will not be fine enough for a polish. But ok to get there scratches out
many thanks

Use a few sheets of thick cotton cloth and rub it by hand
I am going to bet that this polishing pad is still in the videos you are making today.
Yep
Have you heard of an ice opal and how to look after it.
No but I would presume it is Ethiopian opal and would be a little volatile to moisture and or drying out
Can I send mine to you? :(
Why don’t you take it out of the setting?
How
