- A WWII story of two men, known only to each other as 'the enemy', who have a brief encounter in an isolated woods, France, 1944.
This was a student project with a budget of about £250.
There are many historical inaccuracies, the German definitely can't German, but we tried to make the best short film we could with the resources we had available to us.

The German didn't wanted to kill the American. His son taught him not to kill the deer. So he blindfolded the American, and left so the American could live. I liked this clip a lot. I'm German and didn't have much problems understanding what the none German said. Great job Ethan Harman.
I read through all the comments and almost no one gave the producer any credit for trying. Yes, there are many things wrong with the uniforms, equipment, etc., etc. The comment by "new tab", "This film was written by a 5 year old. And cost 85 cents to make. 25 cents over budget"... was it really necessary to get that nasty? If you want to submit helpful criticisms , that's great, but really, guys, is it necessary to trash him?

Yes, it was necessary to trash him. This "film" was so bad, I had to skip through it in huge junks just to see what the ending was. It was very, very badly done. And if nobody says that, how is the maker of this mess going to improve? It was indeed correct for 5-year olds. Flatly awful. There are some good "shorts" from certain other makers of similar material, this maker needs to watch those to get insights.

Mast The whole point of the story is that this German isn't a bad guy just because he's a German. The German didn't shoot the American because he didn't want to. The German wasn't A Killer.
Yes I think its pretty unrealistic. The American just studip imo. And in realuty probably everybody had shot him by his second attack, regardless on which side they are.
Its just not safe to trust a guy who wanted to attack you multiple times.
A most enjoyable short film. Well directed and written. Loved the sentiment of it. Keep up all of your endeavours.

Yes it's not perfect but the movie did it's job to tell the message.
Great story, full of lots of twists and turns. The man hanging is dressed in a parachutists smock and has a parachutists rifle and shoulder patch. We can easily assume he was hung up by his parachute. What we are seeing now with these low-budget movies is new stories, superior acting and the unpredictability of the story line. Hollywood dishes up the same actors, an easily tracked story line (no imagination) and lots and lots of cliches. It is refreshing to see something a lot better. People, you will have noticed that the acting was very high quality. We felt as though they weren't acting. Whereas with Hollywood actors, we do feel they are acting.

When the soldier got off the suspending parachutE, the first thing is to dissappear into the bushes and there to begin. He just stands still and look up for a while and play the bottle of water.
Yeah! I thought that was a bit unrealistic too.....
He sits in a clearing and even takes off his helmet leaving himself even more vulnerable but the acting especially of the guy playing the german soldier was excellent.
There were many 'Oops!' encounters in the war.
Two soldiers, one German, one US, meet in the woods.
They see each other, but for whatever reason neither one opens fire.
They wave, then go about their business.
People get tired, suffer exhaustion...can't be on kill-mode all the time, dig?
Besides, most of the time one soldier is by himself is when looking for a place to poop!

For any of you wondering, No, the flag patch on the American is not the wrong way, in WW2 they didn’t have the flags like they do now, such as in Band of Brothers, when they wore the flag patches, they were “reversed”, they didn’t have the flag regulations like we do now

Great attempt. They put real effort into it, but came up short in some key areas when you are looking at a historically inspired film.

They must have had a really small budget when making this short film but it's alright. The uniforms are a little shitty but the guns are good and correct.

It is an American who learned German, for that he is very good.
For an american, it is very impressive that he is speaking a foreign language, in particular German. I thought most americans are monolinguists.

I'm American. I grew up watching ww2 documentaries and movies. And all who fought in ww2 Americans we were soliders so were the germans. We fought for our countries, In the end we were the same both Soliders and human beings now we are Allies 🇺🇸🕊🇩🇪

The "german" soldier has the collars tabs of the British Free Corps, and captures a US airborne. Even if he is a british vlounteer in the Waffen SS, and knows english, he asks and speaks in german

I like the way he made him go pretending like he’s taking him to the Germans Then the German guy Run Away escape from the American even though he know that he have the American as a hostage but somehow he didn’t want to hurt his feelings and just run away making the American guy without his jacket and weapon Made him so confused that he thought he was in heaven lol 😂

Reading through the comments i was disappointed a little to see people focussing on petty details rather than the sentiment of the film itself. To the average viewer such things would pass largely unnoticed, but to anyone watching its the story of a German Soldier and an allied paratrooper and their brief encounter on the battlefield, no doubt about it. Hardcore history buffs and re-enactment fans would spot it but it doesn't detract from the overall message of what is after all, a short low budget, amateur production.
I think it rocked. A smashing yarn with a priceless message. And no doubt the next one from this crew will be more polished in the details for having gained the experience.

This short film draws so much curiosity but... I too don't quite understand what was going on. Nevertheless, I can't explain why I liked it.
Shown to my summer university class to give some background to them from a personal perspective on the ending of the War.

Constructive criticism is good, and while we know he can't speak the best German, he's American. That's pretty impressive for such an attempt at it. Sure the uniforms weren't exactly put together well, but that's one hell of an attempt to gather things in this that come fairly close to historically accurate. Note that I didn't say it was perfect, but it was decent enough to make for a movie. You can't really complain when they at least tried, but it's obvious some things could be adjusted to improve it.
I mean that is very true, but it’s very impressive for a 5 year old. A young boy scripted and directed this movie, that’s hella impressive.
It's possible that the German was a deserter who showed compassion to the American based on the story of the German's son who did not want to shoot the deer.

Attention to detail on the uniform (paratrooper: wrong boots, white T shirt - colour and the fact he's wearing one rather than a wool shirt, wrong ammunition belt, lack of canteen, pack, etc.) would be good.

Does anyone know the name of the beautiful song accompanying the last scene from 10:07 when the German orders the American up making him take off his jacket and put the Nazi armband over his eyes then leads the American forward, the poor American thinking he's being executed but instead the German runs away leaving the American alone in the field? It's such a beautiful song with wonderful singers. So moving. And I don't care about the poor technical details either the, film and story is emotive with excellent acting.

My last name is Rauch. My grandfather and great uncle fought in Europe during WW2. My grandfather was shot in the shoulder. My great uncle was killed by Germans in france. Two generations prior, my family lived in Germany. So ironic. We named my youngest son after my Great uncle.

no camera, an old kodac film spun on a finger.

The 101st Airborne uniform is pretty good lookin. Though, the English Waffen SS uniform is not that accurate.
