@@chaolihai-innit Exactly this. A voice actor's performance is only as good as the voice direction, because their job isn't to bring their A game into every role, it's to do what they're told to. That's why you can have veteran voice actors with years of experience and hundreds of roles under their belt that just end up not doing a good performance. @@RubyH4rt heck, most of the acting this expansion was just not quite up to par compared to before. If it was just Wuks voice actress, then that would be on them. But several actors having issues? That’s a director problem
I like her English VA but she definitely has a problem conveying burst emotion, which literally is a MAJOR FEATURE in Wuk Lamat's character. This wasn't an adequate role to cast her in.
Thanks for being a decent person and criticizing the cast of that role and not VA personally in a non vulgar/transphobic way. Been deleting some comments remarking her "true" gender and it's shocking to me how many people in the FFXIV community think like that.
@@ffffdsd completely ignoring my point, you can criticize the performance or cast. But attacking the VA is stupid my guy. That trans-people should not be attacked isn’t a „view“ it’s commonsense.
I think that the accent that WUK has with ENG voices is limiting the amount of loud voices you can do with it without breaking character, just try speaking in some cool voice yourself and you will notice how doing loud screams become very difficult 😂, so for any other role it would have been 100% fine, the accent is the limiting factor
I should change my client to German.. (my native) the English one is atrocious in scenes in which she expresses anger and needs to really stress her voice.
Wow... the German synchro is a real rollercoaster. Stellar voice acting by the VA, but horrible scripting, that sounds as natural as if the translator didn't speak the language and made it with only a dicitonary.... just like with Venat in Though must live die and know again... :/
The others are good but the english take on papa really hit me. The smallness of the voice got to me that the others dont quite get but the rage in the others is way more.
Im sad for this profession...You can do MUCH better, even compared to GER version. She did good, but trust me - it can be REALLY better. Me myself talking as a voice acting director.
The German VA absolutely has the best delivery on the scream, but I think the English VA actually has the best delivery on the line right after Gulool Ja Ja gets stabbed. She sounds like she can't believe what she's just seen. I think the points where Sena Bryer's performance is the strongest are when she makes her voice softer, like when Wuk Lamat is sad or wistful.
I find Wuk's EN voice to feel correct contextually. Wuk isn't some battle hardened war hero. She's a young adult with barely any experience of the real world. Loss of a father plus seething rage wouldn't sound confident coming from her.
I think the strange part here is in Sena's VO reels, she has a range of emotions! She knows how to scream. Idk what happened here that everyone else got it right but her...
Idk what people always mean by that, I watched her other roles and its exactly the same as in FFXIV, all of the va roles Senna did sounded really flat to me
I kindof love how differently some of them went for these lines. I personally think EN Wuk Lamat's delivery of "Papa...?" was the best of the four- you can feel Wuk Lamat shrinking back into a child in that moment, which can often happen in traumatic moments. I also think people are overly critical of her delivery of the angry lines. She went in a different direction with it than the others, but I don't think it's a bad direction at all. It's more like a seething rage (emphasized by how her delivery of "murderer..." is more like a hiss, in contrast to GER's outburst of rage), and "As Vow of Resolve" it's like she's *trying* to control herself somewhat to not let herself get carried away by her emotions, while also 100% getting ready to fight. IDK I personally really liked her EN voice lines. (I think it also suits because, story wise, Wuk Lamat and Koana both try and go into busy-mode immediately afterwards. Like they won't let themselves get consumed by it, but they avoid it.) I do think for some scenes it's like she had a lack of proper voice direction (Example, the time she gets spat on her yell is very...subdued. I feel like she wasn't given the context for her line at all there.) but I think she pulls it off where it counts most! I only talked about EN here because people are overly critical of her when I honestly think she did her job well and she deserves more praise imo!! (I think some people let their opinion of the character cloud their judgement too...)
Personally I still like ENG!Wuk's voice the best, but man, that scream from the GER!Wuk is so damn good. Wish the other dubs could've given us a scream that rage-filled lol.
Seeing all of the differences in quality between languages is kind of heartbreaking. I wanted to like/support Wuk Lamat's english VA so much because it's so hard for trans folks to get cast in the first place, and seeing someone cast in such a major role was a blessing... However, that said, my goodness was her performance weak in so many areas. I've said more than a few times that I really feel like this was a failure on the producer / engineer's part, and I feel that if she'd had better guidance, she could have pulled off the same kind of gutteral, visceral emotion that the German VA did here, but it just felt like she was holding back in so many lines where she should have just let loose
@@FrecherAffe We know little of behind the scenes within the production of voicing the cutscenes for Dawntrail. In general, the fault lies with everyone involved, VA's included, however little control they may have had in some parts. There could've been miriad of reasons as to why the voice acting was not up to the task this expansion for the EN cast, be it direction, casting, and so forth. SE's english brand could've been deep into their thoughts of wanting extra points for casting a trans woman as the lead role of the expansion with today's agenda for a lot of the gaming business industries trying to broaden the appeal of a game by simply using such tricks. Results show themselves when part of the dislike of the expansion was a lackluster voice performance. I am unable to gauge Sena's full carrier only on her performance as Wuk Lamat, but if I had to, then I would give her a low score. My guess is that she was miscasted for the role and they could no longer backpedal to find another VA for Lamat, because she definitely doesn't seem to have enough range of emotions without her voice changing completely and no longer sounding like she does when Wuk is more chill. Kind of part for the course being trans, as genetics will play against you weather you like it or not.
ppl are out of their minds, the more mellow or under breath version of the ENG voice actually gives more soul to her, you CAN feel the sorrow underneath the rage which is perfect considering the previous scene is her seeing her father getting killed. The others are great screams for sure and they do show anger but that's about it
I may be biased because I played this all in English to begin with, but either the others go way over the top for me or miss the emotion I expect completely. For me, Wuk Lamat had already come into her own here, so unbridled fury as we hear from the German actor makes her sound weak to my German ears. It’s pure desperation, not the leader she has become during the rite.
People kept describing Wuk Lamat's Japanese voice actor as "cutesy" and "more like an anime girl". I was expecting that weird, squeaky thing women who voice act in Anime do that I hate, that just sounds like a normal voice.
And this is why you hire based on skill and merit and not to fill a check box. Stop saying the voice actor didn’t have “direction”. Can direction play a part? Yes, but a good VA is able to act the part regardless if they have direction or not and that english voice actor most definitely not a good VA even if he had “direction”. And no I am not playing your stupid pronoun game. Nobody cared or even knew the VA was trans until he and “game journalist” started using identity politics as a shield from criticism. The criticism is cause he sucked as Wuk’s english VA not cause he is trans.
*she, as this is no “pronoun game” but just more advanced biology than you learned in school, my guy. Don’t sit on that meager school knowledge and call it authority. Also, check ARR voice acting. It is full of bad voice-acting, and that wasn’t due to the actors. I was a stage-actor for many years, direction will absolutely hinder your ability to show your skill.
@@sarahd.8303 No he is a he. XY means man, XX means female biology is that simple and they literally teach you that in school or rather used to. This is just a stupid pronoun game. And again yes failure of direction can play a part in bad acting but read my post I literally said that. But what also can lead to a failure IS IF THE PERSON DOING THE ACTING IS JUST BAD! Seriously it shouldn’t having your hand held and being “directed” by some guy on the other side of the recording booth to see that this scene is clearly dramatic and requires emotion and a voice of anger to express how Wuk is feeling right now. As many pointed out the Gaman VA nailed the emotion, the english VA did not and no amount of “direction” can change the fact the english VA is just bad at the job.

I don't know what went wrong with their voice direction
@@solitonmedic you listened to WL at the end of final trial and tell me that's an impressive range to my face
@@pastaboy1338 They probably meant outside of this role. It's why they mentioned voice direction.
It could be a variety of reasons outside the VA's control, like bad typecasting, bad voice direction, etc.
@@RubyH4rt heck, most of the acting this expansion was just not quite up to par compared to before. If it was just Wuks voice actress, then that would be on them. But several actors having issues? That’s a director problem
And people wonder why we’re dissatisfied with the English VA in comparison to the others!
GER was fucking chef's kiss omgggg
American one is so inconsistent
Is this black myth wo Kong?
German always works with cats ;-)
Hate to say it... But EN version is the weakest among the voiceovers.
Yeah the blame (if any should be given) needs to be on the English localization team, not the voice actors they chose.
@@ffffdsd completely ignoring my point, you can criticize the performance or cast.
But attacking the VA is stupid my guy.
That trans-people should not be attacked isn’t a „view“ it’s commonsense.
@@ffffdsd yeah that’s enough
I think that the accent that WUK has with ENG voices is limiting the amount of loud voices you can do with it without breaking character, just try speaking in some cool voice yourself and you will notice how doing loud screams become very difficult 😂, so for any other role it would have been 100% fine, the accent is the limiting factor
What game is this?
Fanal fantasy 14
I should change my client to German.. (my native) the English one is atrocious in scenes in which she expresses anger and needs to really stress her voice.
Wow... the German synchro is a real rollercoaster. Stellar voice acting by the VA, but horrible scripting, that sounds as natural as if the translator didn't speak the language and made it with only a dicitonary.... just like with Venat in Though must live die and know again... :/
I can’t tell if it’s bad acting or bad directing from EN… sucks that there’s not much to like about Wuk
German wins. I'm not fond of the English-speaking one, the voice actor seems inexperienced and self-conscious.
English voice actor is also a man.
The others are good but the english take on papa really hit me. The smallness of the voice got to me that the others dont quite get but the rage in the others is way more.
so dead pan
Im sad for this profession...You can do MUCH better, even compared to GER version. She did good, but trust me - it can be REALLY better. Me myself talking as a voice acting director.
Jesus... With all the respect to the US VA but... Goddamn it was a let down to hear her compared to the other ones... So lifeless...
EN voice DIRECTOR needs to get fired ngl what the fck were they doing. Who even is the voice director
NA voice director: Ok, you call Zoraal Ja's name after catching him eating a cookie before supper.
I find Wuk's EN voice to feel correct contextually. Wuk isn't some battle hardened war hero. She's a young adult with barely any experience of the real world. Loss of a father plus seething rage wouldn't sound confident coming from her.
EN va was not ready for a main role. Love Lamaty’i herself, but her voice just ain’t it
What is this from?
Final Fantasy XIV(14) Dawntrail.
The scene shown plays quite a bit later in the story, like level 97 or 98
Feel like ENG has the most flavor to wuk. Im glad
Like they won't let themselves get consumed by it, but they avoid it.)
I do think for some scenes it's like she had a lack of proper voice direction (Example, the time she gets spat on her yell is very...subdued. I feel like she wasn't given the context for her line at all there.) but I think she pulls it off where it counts most!
I only talked about EN here because people are overly critical of her when I honestly think she did her job well and she deserves more praise imo!! (I think some people let their opinion of the character cloud their judgement too...)
Its no scream but English sounds fine to me man. I mean just listen to French, like that was any fuckin better.
Personally I think English did the "papa?" Line best, the others sound like they're just saying his name no sorrowful confusion
Personally I still like ENG!Wuk's voice the best, but man, that scream from the GER!Wuk is so damn good. Wish the other dubs could've given us a scream that rage-filled lol.
why do you like the English voice acting?
It's sad to see so many people lash out on the VA, instead of the direction, which she had no control over.
@@FrecherAffe I agree with you wholeheartedly. Transphobia has no place anywhere in our society.
ppl are out of their minds, the more mellow or under breath version of the ENG voice actually gives more soul to her, you CAN feel the sorrow underneath the rage which is perfect considering the previous scene is her seeing her father getting killed.
I was expecting that weird, squeaky thing women who voice act in Anime do that I hate, that just sounds like a normal voice.
jesus… seeing the comparison you really realize how god awful the EN VA was…
And this is why you hire based on skill and merit and not to fill a check box.
@@ForestX77And this right here is why most critique of DT can't be taken seriously.
Sex and gender are not the same thing. You're a loud, vocal minority that doesn't reflect the greater perception of people who actually play the game.
@@yourface2464 Sex and gender are literally the same thing. YOU are the minority that is screaming over the majority. Gamers want this woke nonsense to end.
@@yourface2464 "You're a loud, vocal minority that doesn't reflect the greater perception of people" Ironic statement from someone defending trans people.
Sena is a male, Sena was born a male. Robin Williams was a male, and was born a male - but when he played Ms. Doubtfire, he nailed it perfectly. That is the sign of a good actor able to really make you believe they are a woman even though they are a man. Sena needs acting lessons to be able to better feminize his voice AND be able to manage emoting effectively as required for his job.
German > Japan > English > French
I feel like EN version takes you by the guts
JP is stereotypical
FR is bad
GER is great
All scenes are look and sound bad, but german on is the best.
