Fantastic explanations of your rationale. As a blind strongman, your detail helped this be accessible and helpful. Hopefully will get me over 400 when I get the chance! This will help myself and my clients!
Very detailed. I love listening to people nerd out on technique. It's interesting because I've seen people actually advocate for the "crane" position (hips go forward and on the toes) in stones. Not saying I disagree with you, or either (I'm a little 5'6 guy that's only trained atlas stones a few times, and have tried both ways and suck both ways). Just interesting that different athletes have different takes.
Watch nearly any WSM or giants stone run where someone fails the last stone during the load. They are very likely craning the stone and come to their toes early. The crane technique works on stones you are strong enough to man handle. But I believe it’s a bad technique to load very high or very heavy. Many strongmen have gotten world class at the crane technique (usually long limb short torso athletes) but I just don’t think it’s the best
@@HattonStrength definitely, guys who are just bigger and stronger can get away with things other people can't. As an almost legal midget I'm definitely going to practice what you've said here and see how it goes.
Put some of this into practice in my session this evening! Was fun 😮 Could you do another stone vid on One-motions? I find my tech changes slightly and wonder if there's anything that you change for them! Thankyou 🙂
I’m actually not the best with one motions. I would study the UK strongmen that frequent giants shows. They are all experts at one motions since they do so many stone series. You’ll see that they hit many of the positions I describe, but one motions require you to “muscle” your way through the transitions
@@HattonStrength Brill! Will take a look at their tech under the microscope! I think mine are fairly decent, I'm only 5ft11 so a little way off being to replicate fully but certainly give it a good go!
First time watching your technique vids and it was super well done, thorough but not an inch of fluff making it too long. Question about shoes, do you have specific shoes you recommend for stones and loading or do you find it more whatever the athletes want?
Thank you! I wear my Nike Metcons for stones, but I think I’m going to try wearing my weightlifting shoes, so I can get better full foot contact in the lap position.
Great video! Stones is something I have trouble with (particularly with the pick up) - I think part of it is due to a lack of flexibility to get myself into the right position... any recommendations on improving this?
Maybe few weeks of really strict stiff leg deadlifts or RDL’s aiming for the biggest ROM possible. You may need to stand on a small box to get a bigger range instead of being limited by the ground. You likely need to get more range out of your hip hinge to get down to the stone. Using the above movements to gain access to more ROM in your hamstrings will likely be a good start. It might also just be a technique thing. As you hip hinge push your hips back as far as you can, looking for an extreme hamstring stretch. From there, squat the rest of the way down to the stone
Great stuff man. I struggle with a lot of tendon ache after doing Stones... Is that something I just gotta get used to, or is it maybe a sign I'm not getting the forearms into the stone enough?
I assume you mean your biceps/forearms hurt after stones? That may indicate you’re rowing the stone as opposed to deadlifting it off the floor. Lifting the stones with your biceps forces small muscles to do big work that they aren’t capable of. Focus on the grip cues in this video and deadlifting as high as possible before transitioning to the lap
Something else you can do is get those muscles/connective tissue strong in specific ways that transfer to stone loading. Add hard squeezes/pauses and really control the eccentrics for all your bicep work and rowing movements. Be incredibly strict. These muscles primarily role in strongman is holding objects firmly against the body. Hold your rows against the body to prep for this

Don’t have much to say here except awesome tutorial and here’s one for the algo! Can’t wait to see you get after it at Strongest Man On Earth.
Lucas, this is so valuable. Thank you!

Another great technique video, thanks Lucas 💪
Love to see a tacky video too! BTW these are great. Your details matter.
Thank you so much! By far my favorite videos to make
I’m a big fan of the spider heavy tacky unless it’s a really hot day.
He's already shown he is top 10, now we just need to see him competing at the top competitions
I hope you’re planning a deadlift technique vid also, as a fellow long torso short limbed fella I’d love to here some tips and insights 👍🏻
It’s coming!
love these videos they’re super helpful!!!
I need to come down to dungeon to practice stones , and a lot of other things! Great videos !
Get down here! Stones from 70 up to 530
Where is the gym? If I'm in the area, I'd love to visit as well.
