  • When I bike into work, I take some back dirt roads instead of main roads. Today I encountered a group of cattle. My first thought was to just sneak past them and not bother them, and hopefully, they wouldn't bother me. So I just slowly inched my way past them, passing them on the right, while they very cautiously passed me on the left. All but 2 cows passed by, but the 2 decided they didn't want to pass me so they turned around and started heading down the road, the same direction as me.
I kept biking down the road, wondering how long these cows would continue trotting down the road in front of me, because they were afraid to pass me. After about 1/4 mile I saw them dart left into a field where the fence was down. It then dawned on me that the herd had escaped through the downed fence and someone would need to herd them back into it. I decided that someone could be me! So I biked around the block, to head off the herd again, this time not passing them by, but herding them back into their field. :)
