    The man could have had a huge ego but he had NONE. Do you see how he shook all those cops hands he didnt have to do it he was grateful to them. the man had true humility. Real class.

      I love that film of him coming from the train and shaking hands with the police officers. He was so graceful and elegant. Then, after he lights up his cigarette, he is sort of surprised by the close camera, but smiles into it. Totally amazing. His smile was playful, magnificent, infectuous and malicious all at the same time. Who else had or has that trait today? No one that I have seen. Rudy will never be replaced by anyone.

    He's a 1920's mafioso, complete with the swag and death stare... and then he politely removes his hat and smiles at all of us from across the centuries! **dies** (Leaving "centuries" as plural for those of you watching this in 3017!) Thanks for sharing!

      @403 Forbidden He was an actor. His swag + music added lends him a mafioso persona. It appears he was a great guy, one of the kindest men ever.

    • @secretariatgirl4249
      @secretariatgirl4249 4 роки тому +1

      @403 Forbidden NO, he was NOT in the mafia!!! No more than my Sicilian family were! However, he pulled something in NYC that was rather duplicitous. He could be an S.O.B. when he felt it was for his own ends. He basically set up his dancing partner Joan Sawyer as the other party in the Bianca de Saulles divorce trial. Pretty ratty thing to do. And we still don't know for sure (as a few of the key court documents are mysteriously "lost") if he was pimping for that older woman he was found with in that apt. or if he was just part of an extortion operation which snared rich men ...this sort of thing was rampant around the country at the time he was in NYC.

      @TealCircle ??? Did you miss my post above about some of the less than perfect aspects of Valentino??? He was human and he wasn't perfect. He was a magnificent screen personality, definitely had a lot of sadness in him, but he had his negatives, as we all do! And some of his early transgressions just after arriving the US alone and very young were most likely not duplicated!

    Rudy was probably the most handsome man who ever lived. As if that wasn't enough, he had a warm and somewhat playful personality. I do notice the bags under his eyes and it could be an indication that he was sick. Apparently, he was in denial about it and next thing ya know, he died.

    • @johnlorenzen4633
      @johnlorenzen4633 4 роки тому +8

      Yes he was on denial. Italians feared sickness and hospitals. He should have been treated atlesst two years before. It would have prevented infection.

      @Barbara Shernoff Yes, they are NOT symtoms of a an ulcer/perforated ulcer. What I wrote above are...as I did the research, too. LOL I am not sure exactly of when this was filmed, but lack of sleep sure can show up as as dark circles...also, allergies!
      As far as Italians fearing sickness and hospitals....back then, for sure. A bunch of my older relatives stayed away until it was too late...one, with colon cancer and the other, my aunt who was having some issues so my mother arranged for an appointment for a barium study. She picks up my aunt (5 miles away) comes back to town to the doctor, where she announced that she had not done the pre-test stuff...my mother was mortified and no test was ever done. She died in her apt. alone, found about a week later, age 82. This aunt also loved to dance and during the 30's would go into NYC to dance at the Harvest Moon Ball, among other dances! She was in her 20's then.

      He was a horseback rider and had several Arabians. He enjoyed riding around the Hollywood hills before it was developed. His house, Falcon Lair was eventually razed but his horse stables have been converted into a lovely home. If you see him riding in the sheik the The Eagle films, you know he was an excellent equestrian. He would often tack up his own horses before scenes and asked for specific well known Arabian "film" horses to be hired for his use during The Son of the Sheik. He could box and sword fight too. And then he was an EXCELLENT dancer. His erect posture, sweeping a lucky lady around the floor, engaging her in conversation all the while. In short, he was a kinetic actor, because he could use his body to express any emotion he wanted. The way he held himself dancing, photos of him controlling a shying horse, the way he'd even use his hands. So very expressive. Very fit (he worked out) with well developed muscles though he was only about 5'8". His only negative habit was incessant smoking. His downfall was his stomach trouble which led to an ulcer, infection in his stomach cavity and with no antibiotics it was only a matter of a few days until he died. So sad.

      @Barbara Shernoff I as surprised to learn that his skin was less than perfect...pockmarks. But who cares? He really had charisma. He did age that last year in particular. He was worried about his hair thinning. His lifestyle seemed to become very destructive. And, with that family with him in CA...that was really an additional source of stress to add to the financial and career pressures.

      @DL I don't claim to be an expert, but I do like to research beyond the repeated "lore".I just fill in gaps that are in sources that people may be unfamiliar with. Why don't YOU try to find information that adds to the picture? He was a complex human being, not just an image for fantasy. The stories at the time are a reflection of how the publicity machine was unrelenting, the hostility was cruel, and the stressors were intense.

    • @secretariatgirl4249
      @secretariatgirl4249 3 роки тому +1

      @DL Well, at least you appreciate Ullman! Many don't. However, there are other people/reporters who he was open with who reveal other anecdotes. Ullman is not the only source. There is also Villalobos, his own relative's PhD thesis aa a source, which I have. Also, RV gave many interviews to key publications as part of the PR push and worked WITH them. I have found plenty of discrepancies/gaps in the "accepted" stories which have negative biases or are just not accurate. So, what is your issue? I am a trained librarian/researcher and I examine things and try to get facts. I question everything I read, cross-reference, etc. I do not categorically accept everything so when I say "from what I've read" I am indicating how I have sifted through many older sources closer to the RV era, newer stuff, and fill in the picture, recognizing that there are new documents or facts that are still coming to light. There are things held in private hands that should be in historical archives. That is where my collection will go as older materials disappear over time. I don't make "bold" statements that are not researched. My blog is fully sourced, BTW with full citations. I was trained that way.
      I don't have definitive answers to every question but am willing to raise them on the basis of research about the era, academic studies, etc. As an Italian I find it very interesting, the very different life RV had from most Italian immigrants. At the end he was ill at ease about where his life was...as H.L. Mencken recounts after RV sought him out only days before he died.

      Yes, Rudy did like much older than 30 or 31, but to me, he looked like he was aging like a fine wine. He still had "it" and plenty more. Had he lived a lot longer, he would have probably not aged well. All that smoking and suffering he held inside would have done him in, I am deeply sorry to say. All I want is for him to continue resting in peace. And that he somehow know that he still has very devoted fans who will never forget him or his legacy.
