Before the year ends (during Thanksgiving or Christmas break), one of my goals is to declutter my important paperwork. I have a simple file system, but over time I tend to collect too many papers and it’s become a “deal with it later” box. Over the last year I’ve worked on decluttering areas of my life and embracing more minimalism, and I’ve noticed an increase in mental clarity and motivation. The next area to declutter are these important documents; I tend to save this until the end of the year when I have more time off work because it can be a lot and requires a good amount of time and energy. We have to spend out our FSA so everyone gets new glasses for Christmas! My husband also changed jobs this year so we’re getting his 401k rolled over before the end of the year.

I’m hoping to put at least another $1k to my Roth IRA before the end of the year. Don’t think I’ll max it out unfortunately but something is better than nothing!
One thing I’m going to do before the end of the year is add up how much I spent in each of my categories in my budget this year and use that info to budget for 2025 ❤️ 💰
I do this annually... I also try to make adjustments where I overspent (eating out/gifts) and adjust for potential price increases. To include insurance premiums, etc. One last item is I adjust my emergency fund to reflect any monthly costs.

My plan for the rest of the year is to pay off the rest of my student loan debt, (4k) so that i have less payments going out. This is partly because i want to find a new job in the new year. I'm an apprentice lineman and travel for work and it means that i spend entirely too much on food.. on top of never being home, and missing everything that comes with that fact. $21 an hour isn't compensating me for it considering i have to spend $40 a day for food because i can't cook on the road.
I want to save up enough money to buy a ticket to finally go on vacation. I normally don’t go on vacations so this has been many years in the making 😊. Me and my sister have been talking about doing a will. She is the one who got me into investments and finance in general. So I love the reminder in this video ✨🫶🏾

I made something similar with my locked file cabinet. I have tab labels and it keeps me organized. I also have digital folders 📂 in my email with my important docs and passwords. I update every year as well. I'm weird. 😆
I've filled out my expense tracker for every month other than april. Idk why but something about just filling it out makes me just so annoyed. I'm going to do it at some point, maybe december 31st at this point lol
Heads up with the back door Roth. Be very careful and seek professional advice when trying to do this. There are a lot of things that can disqualify you from being able to do this. One of the major ones no one talks about is if you already have a traditional IRA in your name, you cannot do a backdoor Roth.
Why is there so much emphasis on the 401k? Personally to me its not worth it. I dont get a match from my employer and the past year my returns are no better that just investing in my brokerage. 401k comes with high fees and its not tax free, you have to pay taxes when u withdraw the money: your hard earned money you cant touch without even more fees until 65. I dont think its as good of a tool as people make it out to be. At least not a “one size fits all” benefit. What are your thoughts?
It also reduces your taxable income each year. You can write off however much you contribute. At least that's my understanding, this is my first year of contributing to one.
Do you have the option to change what you're invested in in your 401(k)? If you're not satisfied with your return maybe look at changing up your allocations.

Each year around this time, I update my will, review my life insurance plans, and make sure to use my medical benefits.

In the UK our end of financial year actually runs from april to april, rather than Jan to Jan. But will use these tips for the new year!
