I used to be a ballperson at the US Open (2005, 2006, 2014). Definitely a very cool job and definitely the best seat in the house. To become a ballperson, we would have three rounds of tryouts. The first two rounds were with evaluators who wanted to make sure that you can run fast, had hand-eye coordination, and had a general understanding of a tennis match. Back in the day, they also evaluated their throwing ability if you wanted to be a "back" ballperson. They switched the rule recently so that all ballpeople have to roll balls now. The last round of the tryout was during the qualifying round of the Open where you worked the matches and if you performed well, you became a ballperson for the main draw. Typically the more seasoned ballpeople got better stadiums with better players, especially since they knew how to run a court smoothly. Our goal was to do our job well but not be in the limelight. And finally, like Sloane said, dealing with sweat comes with the territory. Typically we'll hand the player their towels by holding the ends of the towel and the players will receive them by grabbing onto the center. Once they are done with the towel, we'll hang them up along the fence so help air dry them. If the towels become drenched, the players will typically switch them out for another dry towel.

Do you ever favor one opponent over another? If I was a ball person during Nadal's match, I would keep the towel just a little bit out of his reach. And if it was Federer, when I was handing him his towel, I'd give him some encouragement. "C'mon, Rog, you got this." or maybe some advice "you're too far back on the 2nd serve, buddy..."

Me too! I've been watching tennis for 20+ years and always thought so. My wife watched a match for the first time last week and she said the female player put the ball in the skirt just like that. I said to her, no they must have pockets inside and convinced her I was right 😂

Tennis is awesome to watch, and they're individuals, people hardly care about nationalities there. People love Roger Federer, or Rafael Nadal, or Novak Djokovic, they're great without the need to be American.
