- I designed and built this Engine Test Stand to break in and tune my newly rebuilt engines before installing them in my cars. This stand collapses to be stored under a bench or stand upright against a wall.
Currently on the stand is a 454 all set to go into my 70 Chevelle SS.
The plans for this stand are for sale on eBay at

Very nice job, brother. SWEET BB too. I'm a retired Master Harley Davidson Tech that's gotten rid of all my project cars and truck and bikes, and now I'm bored. I do believe my next project is build a monster BB Chev AND a run stand. But just to add, and I know this comment is coming 7 years late, but this is still one of the nicest home built engine test stands on youtube... nice job.
Thank you. I'm not quite retired yet. Soon. I still have my bike and my project cars. I have an old 454 setting in the corner waiting to be rebuilt. It will be one of my retirement projects. Maybe to put in a car for my grandson. But then again, maybe not. I remember when I was 16 and got my first Chevelle. I drove crazy fast all the time.
Well that's about the coolest thing I've ever seen and that motor runs phenomenally well.
Got your plans today, thank you sir! Very well laid out.
Hey man its no longer on ebay could you share it with me by any chance?
Very well engineered and fabricated motor looks and sounds great too
Remarkably NEAT construction, I am jealous.
Love the sound of a hopped up engine. Beautiful 👍
Well done brother, but man I hate orange blocks brother but that’s me but that’s awesome 😎
Super Duper Nice 👍🏽
Wish I had one!!!!
Great job on the stand.
You sir do very nice work. Your stand looks nicer than many peoples cars haha. Awesome.
Thank you.
I miss my 74 Vette that had a 454. No better sound, imo, than a nice cam in a Rat.
Awesome engine stand buddy!
I used standard 2" Sunpro gauges. I connected them the same as if they were in a car - oil pressure to the oil port near the oil filter, temp to the temp sending port in the side of the head, voltmeter a positive battery connection. and the tach to the tach connection on the HEI distributer.
Sounds like a beast, dude!
Thanks. I currently have it in a 70 Chevelle I am restoring. Hope to have it on the road in the spring. Can't wait to see how it performs.
Nice job .. Looks very nice
Thank you.
Sweet man!!
Wow that looks amazing and sounds Badass love the stand
Thanks. It's on the Chevelle frame now. Getting to start the body work.
@@roscoe445 how's that 454 doing
@@jerrybyrd4518 Just painted the Chevelle this week. Now have to put the interior in. hope to have it on the road next spring.
@@roscoe445 yes sir good morning reason I was asking I got a 71 Chevelle my pop bought it right off the showroom floor here in Florida Milton Chevrolet is totally all original even have the factory plastic over the rear seat it's an ugly green but I absolutely love this cat
I can smell the exhaust!
Sounds great ‼️
Very nice!
Sounds nice good job
Nice Job
Very jealous. That's superb.
Well done!
Thank you.
I like it.
Sounds healthy 👍👍👍
sounds wicked.
Outstanding!
Thank you.
Very nice.
good one
No problem. I'll be glad to help however I can.
hello, Sir can u help me to build another model like urs?
That's a nice looking test stand.
Thank you.
Yes please!
Clean!
Great
good looking stand and sounding engine for some strange reason what came to my mind was something i had read many years ago about a article on flying the old Spitfire Airplanes the pilots said the engine had so much tourque to them that over revving them on take off could cause the plane to flip upside down before you started the motor that thought came to mind ? very nice fabrication on the stand and the welds ive been thinking of making one for Marine Inboard engines as boating is one of my hobbies i would like the stand to be capable of being able to roll a motor around a shop floor for storage purposes as well although many Marine motors with all the accessories can weigh over 800 lbs ive found that in the past a small block Chevy motor will straddle the bucks of a jet ski trailer quite well and thats how ive moved a few of those in the past
Craig, when I first designed this stand, I was worried about engines with huge torque flipping the stand over. So I designed the stand with wheels that extended 12" out each side for a wider base. Turns out it was unnecessary. As well balanced engine runs smooth. I never extend the wheels when running an engine on the stand.
Damn dude, don’t blue ball us with those revs, you were just getting started
hey good job , my 9 yr what to say it’s so cool
Thank you!
Would be great if someone would start manufacturing these and selling them at reasonable price. I've seen nothing else quite as good as this design.
I’d add afr gauges and bungs to exhaust to build carbs as well
roscoe thanks would it be ok from time to time for your help
will be getting a test stand soon. already have a ls1 . just picked
up a 4l60e trans.. just not good with wire and gauges always
mix the wire up or fry them.
nice
Cool
Wonderful! What do each of the controls do or show?
Great Work mate.
I've tried to find your ebay plans, but the item is finished. How do I get them please.
Cheers Jordan
Are you using a lawn mower throttle ? Trying to find something on the cheap for mine curious what your using ?
Nice stand. I wonder why the engine runs smooth for 5 seconds then gets lumpy.
U can build sum bad ass car with that
Yes. Installed in my 70 Chevelle!
The link for the plans are no longer available by the link provided. I am interested if could provide another link or how to get them. Thanks in advance.
What are the cam specs for this? Sweet setup
Roscoe, do you have a standard engine hoist and if so did it clear under your stand? I've seen a lot of builds and people forget that very important measurement. The height of the legs on the engine hoist, they have to slide under the stand. I like yours and am starting mine this week.
Yes, I have a standard engine hoist. My plans call for a 5" shop wheel, which will give you a 6" clearance from floor to bottom of frame, which is enough for a standard engine crane to roll under.
I wish I could see exactly how you mounted the mower cable to your carb linkage
I fabricated a small bracket to capture the end if the mower cable and mounted it to the throttle cable mount. I linked the cable to the carb linkage by putting an electrical wire eye on the end of the cable and hooking it over the stud on the throttle linkage. I have pics but don't know how to add them to my reply.
Plans are no longer available on ebay. Where can I purchase them?
That’s very nice. Is there a torque converter or fly wheel inside the bell housing?
In this video, the flywheel and pressure plate (used in balancing the rotating assembly) are installed. The clutch plate will be installed when it is ready to go into a car.
I just built one just like yours , Can you help me out with the wiring, I am using my points on my 283 motor ...Thanks
I bought your plans several years ago and it sat electronically in my file until now. Started reviewing them and trying to follow your build vid. Having a little trouble following the blueprints versus if you had a step by step build of the stand on video instead of pic by pic. I'm capable of the build by learn better by example. Getting ready to start assembly but wondered if you have any other instructional vids on this build. I bought this mainly because it's easily stored after disassembly. Thanks
This is the closest I have to a build video. Not step-by-step, but it give you a good idea of how to build it. ua-cam.com/video/_2DJTcblpWQ/v-deo.html
Since he doesn't seem to sell them anymore, you mind sharing a copy of the plans. Hell I'll buy your copy.
Hi, today I tray to buy your plans and I can't find it in eBay, I'm from México and wanna know were can buy it please
How can i get a set of plans. No longer available on ebay
How much roughly did all the materials cost to make the stand?
dam that sounds so mean......how did you do the gauges ?
Link to buy plans is not working are you still selling them?
Very clean, does this have electronic ignition?
Just HEI Distributor
How can I get these plans, I can’t find them on eBay
Do you still have these plans available? The link does not work.
Any possibility of getting plans for the stand? I would love to build one.

Not hard to build. Can be built in a weekend.
How can i wire my ignition
I have had 3 1970 Chevelle SS 's . One was a LS-6. Big Block Chevy's remind me of Harleys in that they have a sound all there own. I bought the first one new off the sales floor.
I currently have three big-block Chevelles. A '70 396 (which currently has a 454 LS5 in it), a 71 LS5 and a 72 LS5. Love the music of the big block Chevys.
U run vertical post with holes and factory motor mounts to allow Ford, Chevy, Mopar motors??
That is correct.
Ebay link isn't working.
Good job-- how much do you figured you saved verses buying similar ?
This first stand I built cost me less than $100, not counting radiator and gauges. That was 12 years ago. I build a second stand more recently and I had about $500 into it with everything. Similar stands cost about $1500.
Do you still sell the plans?
Hi. Looking to build this stand but the link to ebay does not work. Can you send your email so I can order one ?
Im interested in buying the plans, but i would like to know what tools do you need to build it?
You will need the following tools:
either a reciprocating saw or a chop saw to cut the steel (unless you have your steel supplier cut it for you).
drill, preferably a drill press capable of drilling 3/8" holes in steel
welder - The first stand I built was with my Lincoln 110v welder with flux-core wire. A MIG set-up on your welder will produce much cleaner welds. welding clamps and basic welding tools
hand grinder or files to clean up sharp edges of cut steel
a basic set of wrenches and hand tools
This stand can be built in one weekend. The most recent stand I built, I ordered the steel pre-cut (expensive!). It took me one Saturday to drill the required holes and weld it up. Took the parts to be powder coated. When I got them back, it only took me a couple hours to assemble it.
Here is a link to my most recent build video... ua-cam.com/video/_2DJTcblpWQ/v-deo.html
Break in should still be done in vehicle correct? These type stands are just to check for leaks and issues before putting in vehicle? Only turn as little as necessary on stand?
I'm looking g to build a stand for my new build but have heard against it.
Thanks.
No. Break-in can be done on the stand. That is exactly what this stand is build for. So you can break the engine in and tune it before putting it in your car. I have broke in all of my engines on this stand. Fire it up, set the timing and bring it up to 2000 rpm for twenty or so minutes to break in the cam and seat the rings. After the break-in, you can fine tune the timing and carb adjustments. Breaking the engine in on the stand is much easier and you don't have to pull it back out of the car if something is not right. I've never broke in a freshly rebuilt engine in my vehicle.
@@russgreen3624 thank you
@@russgreen3624 I have engine work/build stand (attached to transmission holes) and I have engine cradle dolly/stands (mounts to engine mount spots). I'm building an AMC 360 v8.
I am hoping to mount dolly stands with engine to a heavy duty pallet from work. I am going to mount the radiator up and setup gauges and throttle with tach on a panel. Thanks.
I this still available
Do a video on how to wire it and set up gauges ??????....EXPLAIN ....?
Sounds like a good idea. Unfortunately I do no have an engine on the stand right now a nd the stand is somewhat inexcessible until I finish restoring my Chevelle. Shouldn't be too long now. I will work on a wiring video.
Damn Roscoe - the plans are not available anymore

How can i build this to run a efi engine. Is there a special tank and fuel pump i can use?
I have not built an EFI engine. I am not aware of the fuel pump requirements.
where do you get stand from
I designed and built the stand myself.
@@roscoe445 duh i meant to ask where did you get the metal from
@@ramonherron9975 I purchased the steel locally. I have two sources. A surplus steel supply shop I get most of the steel from, and a retail steal supply store (Alro Metals Plus) where I get the not-so-common sizes from. The surplus shop is much less expensive than the retail store.
Do u sell them ?
No, I do not sell completed stands, only the plans to build them. I may in the future build stands to sell, but not right now.
Will a run stand for a sbc work for a B.B. dodge 440
