so youre telling me 14 year olds are expected to wake up at 5 or 6am to go to school, stay until 3 or 4pm, and then go to work until 9pm? that's over 12 hours a day! and when they finally go to sleep there are only 9 hours until 5am. this isnt including homework time or time falling asleep or anything else in the child's life

To be fair, working is a choice at that age. If you as a student want to focus on school, then you can. They're not forcing children to work

So now adults will have to compete not only with the machines which are taking their jobs, but children too. Just like when women joined the workforce in large numbers, this will increase competition between workers, which will allow employers to pay each person they hire less.

  • @jgonsuron

This seems innocent on it's face. What isn't discussed in detail is the motives of corporations. Corporations seek only one thing: profit. Profits for executives and shareholders. In the last 75 or so years, corporations have ceased to improve products as a means for greater profit margins largely due to the concept of functional obsolescence (don't improve design of products so consumers have to replace them). The profit increases come in 2 sectors: automation and reduction of labor costs (conglomeration is also a factor, but on a macro scale...).
The drive to increase profits by hiring a younger workforce will be inevitable. It can be argued that younger people will take jobs for less pay, are easier to replace than older workers, and will work in conditions not acceptable to people with significant work experience. But, don't worry. I'm sure the corporations will act responsibly...

This doesn't seem good at face value nor looking into it. I think child labor should be outlawed everywhere, part time for 14-18 at most. Maybe I'm a little extreme with that, but I just don't think it should be loosened.

Iowa has always been lax about child labor. During my HS years, I worked closing shifts until 2am, pulled 30hrs some weeks on top of school, and found myself unable to stay awake in classes.
Within the farming culture there, kids were expected to contribute as soon as they are capable. No matter how young.

To be honest. There is nothing wrong with teenager's working. There should be rules and regulations. During school day's. They can work part-time. In the summertime. They can work full-time. You can't let teenager's work full-time during school. They need their education. Let them work at summer youth. It should be balance. Adults don't want to work because of the minimum wage. The minimum wage in these states is $7.50 an hour. Bring up the minimum wage for the adults. Instead of hiring undocumented teenager's. Both democratics and republicans need to fix this child labor law. Nobody isn't winning.

The one issue some municipalities have is strict curfew laws for under 16s. Municipalities would have to be pro-active in re-visiting restrictive curfew laws.
As long as a business doesn't leave a young employee stranded out in the boondocks when shift is done I think parents would be on-board.
