  • India's cities are being reimagined with a focus on enhancing urban mobility and creating safer, smarter streets. Pune, Maharashtra, stands out as a leader in this movement, promoting socially vibrant pathways. The Pune Smart City initiative began redesigning 27 km of streets in 2016, starting with Aundh, an area plagued by congestion and safety issues. The goal was to make streets walkable, cycle-able, and accessible. Initiatives included speed calming measures, raised pedestrian crossings, and the creation of areas for exercise and relaxation. Today, these streets buzz with activity, offering a people-friendly environment with maintained tree canopies, spaces for hawkers, and vibrant public spaces. Locals affectionately refer to this transformation as the “Aundh Mall under a canopy,” showcasing the successful development of walkable and cycle-able streets.
