    I found out about the Neo Geo CD via Hi Score Girl. It is featured in a episode where the main character borrows it from a wealthy classmate, and then proceeds to teach himself patience by waiting for the Neo Geo to load. I thought it was a joke, but your side-by-side comparison makes it clear as day! Thanks for the vid, and cheers mate!

    I've own my Neo CD for about 5 years and my AES for about a year. I still actually game a lot more on my CD, sure partly due to my bigger library but also because I don't find loading times all that bad in the games I play the most. The loading times really vary from game to game. For non fighters you only put up with the initial first load and that is it (no loading screens after that). For some fighters it's a sub 30s load between levels which to me is not a big deal. As for the missing frames, it's more a case in some fighters late in the systems life. I highly recommend checking out the Neo Geo reviews from Basement Brothers as they do a great job of showing the variance between AES, MVS & CD.

    I have the Neo Geo CDZ, MVS and AES. There are some missing animations on some games made for the NeoCD. For example, on the charecter select screen in Samsho 2, you will notice missing animations on the charecters vs the AES and MVS Samsho games. Nice vid and congrats on the pick up! 🍻

    Neo Geo CD has a reset button. You need to hold down the A, B, C and D buttons then press start. It should take you back to the Game title screen and if you press select instead of the start button it should take you back to the Neo Geo CD start menu.

    Most of the CD games have both Japanese and English on them. There is a jumper in the Neo Geo CD that you can put a switch to and have essentially a US system. Also you can mod the system with the unibios and it will speed up the load times.

  • @Chris-Courage
    @Chris-Courage 4 роки тому +3

    2 other benefits of the neogeo cd. It's pretty simple to region modify so you can get English for games without a bios swap and no copy protection which means you can use CD-Rs instead of getting that super expensive flash cart for the aes.

    I had one in the 90's (CD system). I probably still have it somewhere. I was a huge fan of the Neo Geo fighters back then, but I think we spent more time watching loading screens than playing.

  • @Old_Man_Jay
    @Old_Man_Jay 4 роки тому +3

    The CDZ had a x2 CD drive. Not a huge step up but it's noticeably faster. In fact, i find that most games load as fast on the CDZ as the original PlayStation. I sold my CDZ a few years ago and now I regret doing that sooo much! I remember only paying $200 on ebay for it. Nowadays they go for $500 and up!
    The Neo Geo CD can be a nice alternative to the AES so as long as you avoid some of the later fighting games, not just because of load times but also because some of them did indeed have less animation than the AES counterpart. I especially noticed this for Samurai Shodown 4. SNK had to cut back the games a little to make the loading less bad than it already was. Besides that though, Most of the games really aren't that bad when it comes to load times. Even on the top loader Neo Geo CD

    My friend owned a Neo Geo CD. When we played King of Fighters ‘95 on it, we agreed to pick the same characters on our team in the same order, to make the load times more tolerable. Eventually we just ended up moving to Tekken 2 (and later 3) as our fighting game of choice. The Neo Geo CD’s drive was just that slow, it discouraged you from playing it.

    As far as I know, not all the CD games have arranged music. Some of them just had recordings of the arcade music as audio tracks. But the ones that do have new arranged music are pretty awesome.

  • @SkyScourgeGod

    The one advantage to the Neo Geo CD over the AES or MVS is its ability to read burned CD-R discs. You want to do something similar on the AES or MVS? Then you'll need to shell out $500 for a Terraonion flash cart or $150ish for a Chinese multicart (which I wouldn't recommend, heard some bad stuff about those Chinese carts). I'd much rather pay $15 for a stack of 100 Verbatim CD-R's then slow burn a bunch of games on them. The load times will definitely vary in acceptance from person to person, but I personally will tolerate the loading times as long as I can play some burned discs while saving some money to eventually buy the real games. AES consoles are also going up in price which makes the investment for a good flash cart even more painful on the wallet. You could easily go $1k in an AES or MVS setup, especially if you decide to buy a consolised MVS instead of building your own.

    • @ezcompane
      @ezcompane 4 роки тому

      Yeah I picked up an AES last year for just north of $350 with 2 games and an MVS adapter. I spent almost as much for 1 AES game than I did the console. Then I dropped my load on the NeoSD Pro when they finally came in stock. If you're someone that really wants to play on the original console the NeoSD Pro is the way to go because you can just buy once and cry once and have the entire catalog available. I'm actually thinking about picking up a CDZ just to have it for the collection, but those prices are slowly creeping up and I can't justify spending so much on it when I can already play CD games with the NeoSD Pro.

      I started on the ZX81 which also had the ram pack wobble as well. Used to sit there holding your breath waiting for 6 or more minutes to load, not daring to move once loaded in case you wobbled the ram pack. Neo cd times are like lightning compared to them though. I remember when the neo cd first come out the games were selling in a game shop near where I worked for £59.99 back in 94. I got most of my cd games around the early 2000s for a lot less. Nowadays the prices are verging on ridiculous.

    Imported a boxed Neo Geo CD bundled with about five games for my birthday in 2004 since I always dreamed of owning a Neo Geo arcade cab or console. To me the load times are well worth the money saved vs. what the AES and games for it cost. While some of the games for the CD can get expensive due to rarity, the music quality and overall price efficiency made more sense to me. I'm curious what SNK has planned for the future.

    Wow 1X cd speed was very painful even at that time, it would fare batter if at least was released with 2X speed and maybe if the cpu (Motorola 68000) could be overclocked to 16mhz. Another problem was compounded with large data requirements for the games since it needed to fill up the DRAM (7 MB) and that took some time and the process was slow too.

    I traded a bunch of lame SNES games for a Neo Geo and 6 games at FuncoLand back in the early 90's. Ended up trading the Neo for other junk and I regret that to this day.

    i had one back in the day it was actually really good just because the cd games were cheaper, since i was quite young i would swap around a lot in the 90s when the jaguar the cdi and 3do came on the scene it was a much more interesting time for consoles, i'v never owned a 3do still to this day i held on to the cdi for some reason with the mpeg cart i just think it was a bit more interesting to collect at the time, i think the neogeo cd was a great system for what it was. i will say tho i do prefer the minis non clicky pads at the time i found the originals really annoying but always wanted the arcade stick and cart version. looking back i'm happy i got rid of it as i regret selling my second jaguar more. and from an emulation point of view, well.....

    Back in 1994 the long loading times was a ´pain in the arse. Not evet SS or PSX had that amount of dead time waiting to play one match. But today its okay, Samurai Shodown for Xbox one X least as much as Samurai Shodown for Neo Geo cd.

    Definitely for the collectors the neo geo cd because of price etc and in my opinion the games are great and everything but for me not much of a difference compared to the neo geo games except on the price. Cool video mlp but for me il stick to emulating the neo geo cd. Stay safe my friend 😷😁👍

    Sooo... Emulation speaking... The AES rom set is about 2.5GB and the CD rom set is over 20gb.
    AES has some more frames of emulation and the CD has slightly better audio quality.
    Can anyone give me a reason better than just being able to brag about having the CD rom set to actually KEEP the rom set on a hard drive taking up 20gb of space?? =/
    Thx in advance ^_^ good vid BTW =D

    That estarland site looks like a scam/ joke site. They have nothing in stock for anything Neo Geo except a few games in the high hundreds or thousands, no systems or accessories.

    Emulating Neo Geo CD makes the loading times almost non-existent. I didn't realize it would be that much faster, since emulating PS1 still has loading times like how I remember them.
